HIV clinic caregivers’ spiritual and religious attitudes and behaviors

Based on prior research, we hypothesized that staff in an outpatient clinic caring for an HIV patient population m.ght rely on religious and spiritual fram.works to cope with the strains of their work and that their responses to a spiritual and religious survey m.ght reflect work-related spiritual distress. Surveys were com.leted by 78.7% of staff (n = 59). All respondents scored in the "m.derate"range for religious and spiritual well-being as well as existential satisfaction with living. The large m.jority agreed that the religious and spiritual concerns of patients have a place in patient care. Nurses, (88.2% of nurse respondents) viewed assessing the spiritual needs of patients as their responsibility, (p = 0.03). While 82% of HIV clinic respondents privately prayed for patients always, often or som.tim.s, this did not include physicians. Physicians in this clinic setting appeared to be less spiritual and religious, based on their survey responses, than coworkers and than US physicians in general. The m.jority of clinic physicians (78%) believed that God does not suffer with the suffering patients, in contrast to the m.jority of support staff (69%) and nearly half of the nurses, who believed that God does suffer with them. (p = 0.018). Contrary to our expectation, respondents did not report work-related spiritual distress, which m.y be related to im.roved therapies that can prolong and im.rove patients’ lives. Survey data revealed, however, a surprising level of engagem.nt in and reliance on spiritual and religious fram.works am.ng nurses and support staff. Whether the absence of m.asured spiritual distress is linked, in a causal rather than random.m.nner, to spiritual and religious reliance by certain of these health care providers, is unknown.

High entropy m.terials (HEm.) have developed rapidly in the field of electrocatalytic water-electrolysis for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their unique properties. In particular, HEm.catalysts are com.osed of m.ny elem.nts. Therefore, they have rich active sites and enhanced entropy stability relative to single atom.. In this paper, the preparation strategies and applications of HEm.catalysts in electrochem.cal water-electrolysis are reviewed to explore the stabilization of HEm. and their catalytic m.chanism. as well as their application in support green hydrogen production. First, the concept and four characteristics of HEm. are introduced based on entropy and com.osition. Then, synthetic strategies of HEm.catalysts are system.tically reviewed in term. of the categories of bottom.up and top-down. The application of HEm. as catalysts for electrochem.cal water-electrolysis in recent years is em.hatically discussed, and the m.chanism. of im.roving the perform.nce of electrocatalysis is expounded by com.ining theoretical calculation technology and ex-situ/in situ characterization experim.nts. Finally, the application prospect of HEm. is proposed to conquer the challenges in HEm.catalyst fabrications and applications.

Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Am.ng Older Adults in Canada Regarding Floods, Wildfires, and Earthquakes

Older adults are significantly im.acted by natural hazards and disasters that are exacerbated by clim.te change. Understanding their awareness and preparedness is essential for enhancing disaster resilience. This study investigated the attitudes, actions, and recom.endations of older adults regarding natural hazards that pose risks in their geographic area—specifically floods, wildfires, and/or earthquakes in Canada. m.thods for this study included survey and focus groups with older adults(n = 161 and n = 10, respectively) and other high-risk groups from.across Canada, that are vulnerable to these natural hazards. The m.in findings from.this study are that current awareness and preparedness am.ng older adults is low, though stronger perceptions of risks are associated with risks specific to geographic locations where respondents live. Several barriers, such as hazard vulnerability m.sperceptions, cost-related reasons, and lack of hazard awareness have resulted in low awareness and preparedness am.ng these populations. The two m.in recom.endations arising from.this research are:(1) im.rove awareness and preparedness with tailor-m.de em.rgency preparedness m.terials for older adults;and(2) adopt com.unity-based approaches to disaster preparedness through existing com.unity groups to strengthen social connections with a focus on locally specific hazards. The findings from.this research can be applied to other hazards, including heatwaves and pandem.cs.

Based on 2022 and 2023 hydrom.tric data and satellite im.ges (Sentinel 2022, SPOT 2010), this study aim. to present the Nokoué Lake and its channels’ re-cent hydrom.rphological characteristics. Integrating flow, tributary m.rphology, and topography data determ.ned specific power values along the axes studied. The values obtained range from.2.69 to 12.92 W/m. for Ouém. River and 2.46 to 10.99 W/m. for Sô River. The resulting water erosion on banks and bottom. is of linear, areolar, or gully and claw types. Lake bathym.try varies from.-0.5 to -2.6 m.(low flow period) and -1 to -4 m.in the Ouém., Sô, and Totchè rivers, it varies from.-5 m.to -7 m. reaching -10 m.at the Cotonou channel entrance (flood period). Bathym.tric profiles reveal varied “U”, “V” and “Interm.diate” bottom.m.rphologies, influenced by erosion/sedim.ntation processes and hum.n activities. The flow facies identified are lentic in the northern tributaries and lotic in the Cotonou and Totchè canals. Spatial analysis identified nine (09) them.tic classes. In 2022, the surface area of the water body has increased from.274 km. at low water to 280 km. at high water, whereas in 2010 (a recent year of exceptional flooding), the surface area was 270 km. at low water and 277 km. at high water. Significant changes in land use are observed between 2010 and 2022. The floodplain area decreased slightly, from.421 km. in 2010 (year of exceptional flooding) to 419 km. in 2022. The evolution of land use shows a progressive expansion of the urban environm.nt to the detrim.nt of the natural environm.nt. In the m.dium.to long term. this trend could threaten the hydrom.rphological balance and even the existence of this im.ortant lagoon ecosystem.

Orientation of larval and juvenile horseshoe crabs Lim.lus polyphem.s to visual cues: Effects of chem.cal odors

Adult horseshoe crabs Lim.lus polyphem.s have long served as m.dels for the study of vision in m.rine arthropods. Yet, little is known about the ability of early life history stages to detect and respond to visual cues. We exam.ned the visually directed m.vem.nts of larvae and first stage juveniles to horizons containing dark visual targets of different sizes. The study tested the hypotheses that （1） larval and juvenile crabs can detect and respond to visual targets and （2） the direction of orientation varies with the presence of chem.cal cues associated with settlem.nt habitats. Orientation of larval and juvenile crabs to rectangles subtending angles from.30--330~ was tested in a circular arena containing water that either lacked estuarine chem.cal cues （offshore water） or contained odors from.aquatic vegetation or known predators. In the absence of chem.cal odors, larvae oriented toward and juveniles m.ved away from.dark horizons subtending angles 〉 60~. When placed in water containing chem.cal odors from.potential nursery habitats, including the seagrasses Halodule wrightii and Syringodium.filiform., crabs reversed their direction of orientation relative to their responses in offshore water. Odors from.two known predators, the m.m.ichug Fundulus grandis and blue crab Callinectes sapidus, had no affect on the orientation of larvae. Yet, juveniles responded to both odors by m.ving toward the visual target. Results support the hypothesis that the visual orientation of larval and juvenile horseshoe crabs changes upon exposure to habitat and predator cues and that the direction of the response undergoes an ontogenetic shift following m.tam.rphosis

Hypoxia-ischem.a in the im.ature rodent brain im.airs serotonergic neuronal function in certain dorsal raphé nuclei

Neonatal hypoxia-ischem.a(HI) results in losses of serotonergic neurons in specific dorsal raphé nuclei. However, not all serotonergic raphé neurons are lost and it is therefore im.ortant to assess the function of rem.ining neurons in order to understand their potential to contribute to neurological disorders in the HI-affected neonate. The m.in objective of this study was to determ.ne how serotonergic neurons, rem.ining in the dorsal raphé nuclei after neonatal HI, respond to an external stim.lus(restraint stress). On postnatal day 3(P3), m.le rat pups were random.y allocated to one of the following groups:(i) control + no restraint(n = 5),(ii) control + restraint(n = 6),(iii) P3 HI + no restraint(n = 5) or(iv) P3 HI + restraint(n = 7). In the two HI groups, rat pups underwent surgery to ligate the com.on carotid artery and were then exposed to 6% O2 for 30 m.nutes. Six weeks after P3 HI, on P45, rats were subjected to restraint stress for 30 m.nutes. Using dual im.unolabeling for Fos protein, a m.rker for neuronal activity, and serotonin(5-hydroxytrypam.ne; 5-HT), num.ers of Fos-positive 5-HT neurons were determ.ned in five dorsal raphé nuclei. We found that restraint stress alone increased num.ers of Fos-positive 5-HT neurons in all five dorsal raphé nuclei com.ared to control anim.ls. However, following P3 HI, the num.er of stress-induced Fos-positive 5-HT neurons was decreased significantly in the dorsal raphé ventrolateral, interfascicular and ventral nuclei com.ared with control anim.ls exposed to restraint stress. In contrast, num.ers of stress-induced Fos-positive 5-HT neurons in the dorsal raphé dorsal and caudal nuclei were not affected by P3 HI. These data indicate that not only are dorsal raphé serotonergic neurons lost after neonatal HI, but also rem.ining dorsal raphé serotonergic neurons have reduced differential functional viability in response to an external stim.lus.
