d.et represents an important risk factor for tumor d.velopment and.numerous food.d.es have been tested.for their carcinogenic potential. Caramel IV colorant and.its byprod.ct, the 4-methylimid.zole （4-MI）, are part of the composition of cola soft d.inks, although in und.fined.concentration. Consid.ring that this concentration d.pend. on the manufacturing place, we aimed.to evaluate the potential carcinogenic activity of cola soft d.inks from Brazil, Canad., Egypt and.Netherland., through the test for d.tection of epithelial tumor clones （warts） in somatic cells of d.osophila melanogaster. We used.72-hour larvae resulting from the crossing of wts/TM3, Sb^1 virgin females and.mwh/mwh males. Larvae were exposed.to the med.a containing the cola soft d.inks for 48 hours and.the analysis was performed.in ad.lts after transformation. Cola soft d.inks from Brazil significantly ind.ced.epithelial tumor in d. melanogaster, while those from Canad., Egypt and.Netherland. d.d.not. In fact, the concentration of 4-MI is higher in cola soft d.ink commercialized.in Brazil. Our results highlight the importance of investigating the toxic potential of current d.inks, which may correlate with the rising incid.nce of malignant d.seases.
