Auditory event-related brain potentials for an early discrimination between normal and pathological brain aging

The brain as a system with gradually decreasing resources maximizes its chances by reorganizing neural networks to ensure efficient performance. Auditory event-related potentials were recorded in 28 healthy volunteers comprising 14 young and 14 elderly subjects in auditory discrimination motor task （low frequency tone - right hand movement and high frequency tone - left hand movement）. The amplitudes of the sensory event-related potential components （N1, P2） were more pronounced with increasing age for either tone and this effect for P2 amplitude was more pronounced in the frontal region. The latency relationship of N1 between the groups was tone-dependent, while that of P2 was tone-independent with a prominent delay in the elderly group over all brain regions. The amplitudes of the cognitive components （N2, P3） diminished with increasing age and the hemispheric asymmetry of N2 （but not for P3） reduced with increasing age. Prolonged N2 latency with increasing age was widespread for either tone while between-group difference in P3 latency was tone-dependent. High frequency tone stimulation and movement requirements lead to P3 delay in the elderly group. The amplitude difference of the sensory components between the age groups could be due to a general greater alertness, less expressed habituation, or decline in the ability to retreat attentional resources from the stimuli in the elderly group. With aging, a neural circuit reorganization of the brain activity affects the cognitive processes. The approach used in this study is useful for an early discrimination between normal and pathological brain aging for early treatment of cognitive alterations and dementia.

Exploring the Potential of Mapping Cropping Patterns on Smallholder Scale Croplands Using Sentinel-1 SAR Data

It is of paramount importance to have sustainable agriculture since agriculture is the backbone of many nations’ economic development. Majority of agricultural professionals rarely capture the cropping patterns necessary to promote Good Agricultural *** of this research is to explore the potential of mapping cropping patterns occurring on different field parcels on small-scale farmlands in Zimbabwe. The first study location under investigation are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center(CIMMYT) research station and a few neighboring fields, the second is Middle Sabi Estate. Fourier time series modeling was implemented to determine the trends befalling on the two study sites. Results reveal that Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar(SAR) time series allow detection of subtle changes that occur to the crops and fields respectively, hence can be utilized to detect cropping patterns on small-scale farmlands. Discrimination of the main crops(maize and soybean) grown at CIMMYT was possible, and crop rotation was synthesized where sowing starts in November. A single cropping of early and late crops was observed, there were no winter crops planted during the investigation period. At Middle Sabi Estate, single cropping on perennial sugarcane fields and triple cropping of fields growing leafy vegetables, tomatoes and onions were observed. Classification of stacked images was used to derive the crop rotation maps representing what is practised at the farming lands. Random forest classification of the multi-temporal image stacks achieved overall accuracies of 99% and 95% on the respective study sites. In conclusion, Sentinel-1 time series can be implemented effectively to map the cropping patterns and crop rotations occurring on small-scale farming land. We recommend the use of Sentinel-1 SAR multi-temporal data to spatially explicitly map cropping patterns of single-, double-and triple-cropping systems on both small-scale and large-scale farming area

neuromuscular disease caused by the homozygous mutation or deletion of the survival motor neuron 1(SMN1)gene.A second copy,SMN2,is similar to SMN1,but produces only~10%SMN protein because of a single-point mutation(C>T)in coding exon 7 causing a splicing defect which leads to the exclusion of exon 7,resulting in a majority(~90%)of transcripts lacking exon 7 that translate into mutant SMN(SMNΔ7)*** is caused by chronic low levels of SMN and is characterized by the degeneration of the spinal cord motor neurons leading to symmetrical skeletal muscle atrophy,respiratory failure,and death(Ahmad et al.,2012).Chronic low levels of SMN cause the accumulation of pathogenic R-loops and double-stranded breaks(DSBs)in DNA,leading to genomic instability and neurodegeneration in SMA(Kannan et al.,2018).The severity of SMA disease correlates inversely with SMN levels.

For more than 20 years,the concept of near-fault pulse-like ground motion has been a topic of great interest due to its distinct characteristics,particularly due to directivity or fling effects,which are hugely influenced by the rupture *** unexpected characteristics,along with their effective frequency,energy rate,and damage indices,create a near-fault,pulse-like ground motion capable of causing severe damage to *** of the most common approaches for identifying these ground motions is done by conducting wavelet decomposition of the ground motion time history to extract a pulse signal and eventually categorize an earthquake by comparing the original signal to the residual ***,to overcome the intensive calculations required in this approach,this study proposes using artificial neural networks to identify pulse-like ground motions through classification to predict their pulse period by means of regression ***,the study is intended to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of various artificial neural networks in identifying pulse-like ground motions and predicting their pulse *** general,the results of the study have shown that the artificial neural network can identify pulse-like earthquakes and reliably predict their pulse period.

Detection of PCV2 DNA by SYBR Green I-based quantitative PCR

We developed an assay for the detection and quantitation of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) with the SYBR Green I-based real-time PCR. The real-time PCR provides a broad dynamic range, detecting from 103 to 1011 copies of DNA per reaction. No cross-reactions were found in specimens containing PCV1. Because of the high sensitivity and specificity of the assay with a relatively rapid and simple procedure, real-time PCR can be used as a routine assay for the clinical diagnosis of PCV2 infection. In this study we applied real-time PCR assay to 80 clinical samples, collected from 40 pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and 40 healthy pigs in comparison with conventional PCR assay. In 56 of 80 samples, PCV2 DNA was de-tected by conventional PCR assay. All samples positive for PCV2 DNA in conventional PCR assay were also positive in real-time assay, and 12 of 24 samples that tested negative for PCV2 DNA in the conventional assay were tested positive in real-time PCR assay. Real-time PCR assay increased the number of samples in which PCV2 was detected by 15%. It is, therefore, considered to be a useful tool for the detection of PCV2.
