Knowledge, Attitudes, and Experiences of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Trial Participants in Botswana

Recent clinical trials have shown that a daily dose of oral TDF/FTC pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective in reducing human immunodeficiency (HIV) risk. Understanding trial participants’ perspectives about retention and PrEP adherence is critical to inform future PrEP trials and the scale-up and implementation of PrEP programs. We analyzed 53 in-depth interviews conducted in April 2010 with participants in the TDF2 study, a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, place-bo-controlled clinical trial of daily oral TDF/FTC with heterosexual men and women in Francistown and Gaborone, Botswana. We examined participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of the trial, identified facilitators and barriers to enrollment and retention, and compared participant responses by study site, sex, and study drug adherence. Our findings point to several factors to consider for participant retention and adherence in PrEP trials and programs, including conducting pre-enrollment education and myth reduction counseling, providing accurate estimates of participant obligations and side effect symptoms, ensuring participant understanding of the effects of non-adherence, gauging personal commitment and interest in study outcomes, and developing a strong external social support network for participants.

＜正＞This paper describes an online environment for learning descriptive Geometry. Structured like an Intelligent Tutoring System, this interactive tool adapts teaching in accordance with the student’s performance. The instruction is based in solving descriptive Geometry problems using a graphical applet. The problems are from an electronic library which catalogs them according to their concepts and difficulty levels and has a search mechanism used by a tutor module to select appropriate problems to offer the student when needed. The system maintains a model of the student to infer what he probably knows and what is still to be mastered. By comparing the students responses to the solutions recorded with the problems in the library, the tutor module is able to tell if the apprentice successfully solved a problem to, besides updating the student model, offer him help or another problem for increasing his development in the system.

Introduction: Sexual problems are fairly common, and sexuality is an important parameter of health and quality of life. However, only a few centers in Brazil have ambulatories specialized in sexual dysfunction. This study was conducted in a service that is a state reference for these pathologies. Methods: This study was conducted at the human sexuality ambulatory of a large public hospital in southern Brazil. It was a cross-sectional descriptive study with women attending at the first medical visit to the ambulatory of human sexuality in a period of four years. Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaires with both qualitative and quantitative questions were applied in all first medical visits to the ambulatory. Results: The 153 women attending had a mean age of 40.9 (±12.9) years. The most frequent complaint was “lack of desire” (56.8%), followed by pain in intercourse (25.4%) and lack of pleasure or inability to achieve orgasm (12.4%). The prevalence of sexual dysfunction (FSFI cut-off score de that women who seek care in sexuality are in the perimenopausal period and that factors such as the number of children, age of menopause and length of the relationship have a negative influence on sexuality. The score for the self-assessment of sexuality could serve as an initial screening for sexual dysfunction, since it is quick and easy to apply in routine medical visits. However, more studies are required to compare the FSFI and this score.

Validation of a HPLC Method for Quantification of Thiamine and Its Phosphate Esters in Rat Brain Tissue

The present data show a fast and efficient biological sample processing method for the extraction of thiamine (vitamin B1) and its mono-(TMP) and di-(TDP) phosphate esters from hippocampus, thalamus and prefrontal cortex (PFC) and blood sample of the rodents. In addition, using the hippocampus and standards of these three compounds we validated an isocratic fluorescence HPLC procedure for a simultaneous detection of them in a single chromatogram within a total run time of about 12 min. Reproducibility for TDP, TMP and B1 was 2.66%, 4.50% and 7.43% (intraday) and 37.54%, 25.39% and 25.87% (interday), respectively. Recovery assays were between 96.0% and 101.7%. The calibration curves were linear and the concentrations of the three compounds, all in nanomolar range, were determined in the brain areas and in the blood samples. When compared to the current methods in the literature, this new method provides information on essential variables, such as linearity range and limit of detection, reproducibility and stability of thiamine, TMP and TDP in rat brain samples. The present data on sample processing and B1 and its phosphate ester level determinations are the first to be validated using hippocampus samples of rats.

This study is a contribution to the behavior of the corrosion process of steel by carbon dioxide (CO2) and the formation the FeCO3 (siderite) by using both weight loss and electrochemical techniques when the material is exposed to a CO2 saturated 3% NaCl solution at 50 °C. The study included the analysis of an imidazoline based inhibitor which was relevant in the process of mitigating the carbonate layer formation. The test was elapsed during 336 h in an electrochemical cell where several EIS studies were performed along the test to characterize the iron carbonate layer formation as well as the role of the corrosion inhibitor. Post test SEM and X Ray Diffraction studies on coupon materials revealed the iron carbonate layer characteristics, as well as the role of the inhibitor in the control of the layer formation.

Energetic Analysis of Two Thermal Power Plants with Six and Seven Heaters

An energetic analysis of two power plants with six and seven heaters was realized in this work and also a feedwater heater was taking into consideration. This analysis considered the temperature and pressure ranges under which power generating plants work. The unit thermal consumption (UTC), the specific fuel consumption (SFC) and the specific steam consumption (SSC) were obtained for power generation. The energetic analysis to the cycles of steam with regeneration with six and seven heaters was realized. There was a difference of 0.5% in the values of UTC, SFC and SSC when the pressures of condensation changed. Also an analysis of the behavior of the thermal efficiency in relation to the rise of numbers of heater from two to seven is presented.

This paper explores a decision making model for a multidisciplinary problem in nature. This problem considers the role of energy use in sustainable development and the potential sources to increase energy efficiency during its whole life cycle;it also deals with multicriteria decision making of plastic materials used in a day to day basis. Exergy analysis of plastic materials used to the manufacture of disposable polyethylene bags comparing them with other materials that can be used for substitution will be important to take decisions. We are also interested in plastic poly (ethylene Terephthalate or PET) bottles. The calculation of the incoming and outgoing Exergy flows during the production processes are carried out. The Exergy loss considering the sustainability concept, Green House Gases emissions, real energy flows needed to the chain of processes, material balances in the productions chains and value added, are presented as a set of criteria to make decisions of alternative materials including the actual ones. A case study for Mexico’s market will be developed in order to prove the methodology. It offers some interesting data about consumption and production of bags and bottles.
