A new process to produce magnetite partially coated with strawberry-like gold nanoparticles in aqueous media is reported. The fast response to magnetic fields and optical properties of gold nanoparticle-based colloidal systems are the two main advantages of this new Fe@Au nanomaterial. These advantages allow for the use of this new colloidal nanomaterial for various purposes in proteomics and biomedicine, as proteins can bind to the surface, and the surface can also be funcfionalized. As proof-of-concept, the new Fe@Au nanoparticles have been assessed in biomarker discovery as a tool for pre-concentration and separation of proteins from complex proteomes. To this end, sera from healthy people were compared with sera from patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The application of this new Fe@Au nanomaterial combined with mass spectrometry has allowed for the identification of 53 proteins, and it has also shown that the heat shock protein HSP75 and the plasma protease c1 inhibitor are potential biomarkers for diagnostics and control of multilvle mveloma vro^ression.

Influence of fibre and betaine on development of the gastrointestinal tract of broilers between hatch and 14 d of age

An experiment was designed to determine the influence of fibre and betaine on the development of the intestine, liver and pancreas of broilers from hatch to 14 d of age. A total of 250-day-old cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to 16 cages with 15 broilers each. Treatments were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial design, consisting of 2 feed formulations(low and high fibre diets) and 4 levels of betaine(0,1, 3 or 5 kg/t). At hatch, 10 birds in total were euthanised, and samples of the liver, pancreas, yolk sac and intestine were collected for reference of the analysed parameters before the start of the *** d 4.9 and 14, 5 birds per cage(10 birds per treatment) were selected, euthanised and treated as the same as the birds at hatch. Villus height and width and crypt depth were determined on the duodenum samples, and absorptive area was calculated. The number of enterocytes in mitosis at the villus was determined by a positive reaction to antibody for Ki67 protein, and fused villus was evaluated visually. The relative weight of the yolk sac reduced(P ched a maximum(P creas at d 9. Birds fed the high fibre diet had greater feed intake, lower relative weight of the pancreas and higher villus(P creased(P ciated with fused villus. Betaine inclusion reduced(P creased(P ced(P cytes with positive reaction for the antibody *** inclusion reduced the width and increased the absorptive area and the villus height of the duodenum of birds up to 14 d of age. The higher fibre diet increased feed intake and villus height, yet reduced pancreas relative weight, while not affecting body weight gain. This response was possibly due to a dilution effect of the fibre, reducing nutrient absorption

Background:Biochemical and hematological parameters are important tools for assessing the physiological profile of vital organs,and can be recorded to create reference values used for clinical diagnosis of *** research laboratories lack the means to establish their own set of reference parameters for use in their research,and while there are articles in the literature that discuss laboratory parameters for healthy BALB/c mice,few studies address the evaluation of these parameters in pathological situations,such as in mice inoculated with Ehrlich ***:BALB/c-FMABc mice previously inoculated with Ehrlich tumor were maintained under appropriate *** samples were taken for analysis of hematological parameters using automated and semi-automated equipment to create a set of the animal welfare parameters for ***:Results were obtained for all the hematological parameters for all groups *** showed:statistically significant differences between the initial and final tumor weight;comparable initial tumour volume and weight;an increase in leukocytes in the 7-day group with a characteristic predominance of lymphocytes and neutrophils;statistically significant changes in RDW in the 21-day group and in the welfare parameters in the 28-day ***:The study successfully defined and established reference values for hematological and welfare parameters for all groups analyzed.

Objective:Radical prostatectomy is the recommended treatment for localized prostate cancer;however,it is an invasive procedure that can leave serious ***-assisted radical prostatectomy was introduced with the aim of reducing postoperative morbidity and facilitating rapid recovery compared to the traditional Walsh’s open radical retropubic ***,a protocol was developed to perform an open prostatectomy comparable to that performed by robotics,but without involving novel ***:A total of 220 patients diagnosed with localized prostate cancer underwent radical *** were divided into two groups:anterograde technique(115 patients)and the retrograde method(105 patients).The study outcomes were observed 3 months after ***:No differences were found in terms of surgical time,hospital stay,and suction ***,reduced bleeding was observed in the anterograde technique(p=0.0003),with rapid anastomosis duration(p=0.005).Among the patients,60.9% undergoing the anterograde technique were continent 3 months after surgery compared to 42.9%treated by the retrograde method(p=0.007).Additionally,fewer complications in terms of the number(p=0.007)and severity(p=0.0006)were observed in the anterograde ***:The anterograde method displayed increased efficiency in reducing complications,compared to the retrograde technique.

A comparative Study on the Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Biodiesel from Various Vegetable Oils and Animal Fat

The potential of biodiesel fuels from various vegetable oil sources such as sunflower (SFME), safflower (SAFME), peanut (PME) and canola (cME) as well as from low-cost chicken fat (cFME) to supplement increasing biodiesel demands must be evaluated in terms of the corresponding engine performance and exhaust emissions. In this study, two diesel engines rated at 14.2 kW (small) and 60 kW (large) were operated by using the different biodiesel fuels and a reference diesel. Results showed that both the small and large engines delivered similar power when using biodiesel fuels in the expense of higher brake-specific fuel consumptions (BSFc). Higher exhaust concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (cO2) while lower carbon dioxide (cO) and negligible sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions were observed in both engines. Total hydrocarbon emissions (THc) were higher in both engines when using SME, SFME and cME but comparable when using cFME, SAFME and PME in the large engine. Thus, with the increasing demand for biodiesel, alternative feedstock sources such as those used in this study may be utilized to take advantage of their availability, renewability and environmental benefits.

The RE-Fe-B permanent magnets have a complex microstructure and they are susceptible to corrosion process. In this paper, the commercial nickel coatings adhesion was investigated. The microstructure of the RE-Fe-B without coating was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy and electrochemical techniques. The interface magnet/coating was studied by scanning electron microscopy and the nickel-plated Nd-Fe-B commercial magnets were tested in a salt spray chamber. The ferromagnetic and RE-rich phases were observed. After the anodic polarization curve, a strong intergranular corrosion was observed and the RE-rich phase was preferentially attacked. The interface magnet/Ni coating presented inter-granular corrosion that can affect the nickel coating adherence. This attack had probably occurred during the electrodeposition process. Not all the samples suffered localized corrosion during the salt spray tests and the Ni triple-layer coating presented a few corrosion points. RE-Fe-B alloy magnets need to be protected with appropriate coatings to each environment to which they will be exposed and the protective coating must not be damaged.

Nanoparticle-based plasmonic optical fiber sensors can exhibit high sensing performance,in terms of refractive index sensitivities(RISs).However,a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the RIS in this type of sensor remains limited,with existing reports often overlooking the presence of surface plasmon resonance(SPR)phenomena in nanoparticle(NP)assemblies and attributing high RIS to plasmonic coupling or waveguiding ***,using plasmonic optical fiber sensors based on spherical Au nanoparticles,we investigate the basis of their enhanced RIS,both experimentally and *** bulk behavior of assembled Au NPs on the optical fiber was investigated using an effective medium approximation(EMA),specifically the gradient effective medium approximation(GEMA).Our findings demonstrate that the Au-coated optical fibers can support the localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)as well as SPR in particular ***,we found that the nanoparticle sizes and surface coverage dictate which effect takes precedence in determining the RIS of the *** data,in line with numerical simulations,revealed that increasing the Au NP diameter from 20 to 90 nm(15%surface coverage)led to an RIS increase from 135 to 6998 nm/RIU due to a transition from LSPR to SPR ***,increasing the surface coverage of the fiber from 9%to 15%with 90 nm Au nanoparticles resulted in anincrease in RIS from 1297(LSPR)to 6998 nm/RIU(SPR).Hence,we ascribe the exceptional performance of these plasmonic optical fibers primary to SPR effects,as evidenced by the nonlinear RIS *** outstanding RIS of these plasmonic optical fibers was further demonstrated in the detection of thrombin protein,achieving very low limits of *** findings support broader applications of high-performance NP-based plasmonic optical fiber sensors in areas such as biomedical diagnostics,environmental monitoring,and chemical analysis.

In this review,the state of the art in understanding the structural phase relations in perovskite-structured BiFeO_(3)-based polycrystalline solid solutions is presented and *** about the close relation between the structural phase and overall physical properties of the reviewed systems are pointed out and *** is shown that,by adjusting the structural symmetric arrangement,the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of BiFeO_(3)-based polycrystalline solid solutions can be tuned to find specific multifunctional ***,an intrinsic mechanism linking structural arrangement and physical properties cannot be identified,revealing that this subject still deserves further discussion and investigation.
