Forest-grassland biodiversity hotspot under siege:land conversion counteracts nature conservation

We report extent and rate of land use/land cover change in a forest-grassland mosaic of Rio Grande do Sul,Brazil,during a recent period of increasing conflicts between native habitat protection and *** area is part of the Atlantic rain forest biome,a Global Biodiversity *** Landsat and Google Earth imagery,and calculating an effective conservation risk index(ECRI)as ratio of converted to remnant area,we specifically compared the effectiveness of designated fully protected areas(FP-PAs)and Sustainable Use areas(SU-PAs)in preventing conversion of native forest and grassland hab-itats for agri-and silviculture,relative to areas *** area decreased by 17%,corresponding to a net loss of 59,671 ha,in the entire *** gains exceeded losses,and ECRI was zero inside Full Protection ***-native tree plantation area increased by 94%over the entire study area;cropland increased by 7%.Conversion for silviculture predominated outside the designated PAs and conversion for agriculture predominated inside the designated *** was generally higher for grassland than forest,and in SU-PAs,grassland ECRI was several times higher than in areas without any protection *** developments are in stark contrast to the high standards of the Brazilian protected area system and corre-sponding International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources *** are due to protracted regularization of land conversion and establishment of designated protection ***-more,they reveal the dilemma of previously managed grasslands in strictly protected areas being eventually succeeded by forest,and the hazards of broad interpretation of the term“sustainable development”.

Spontaneous rupture of hepatic hemangiomas:A review of the literature

Hepatic hemangiomas are congenital vascular malformations,considered the most common benign mesenchymal hepatic tumors,composed of masses of blood vessels that are atypical or irregular in arrangement and size. Hepatic hemangiomas can be divided into two major groups:capillary hemangiomas and cavernous hemangiomas These tumors most frequently affect females (80%) and adults in their fourth and fifth decades of life. Most cases are asymptomatic although a few patients may present with a wide variety of clinical symptoms,with spontaneous or traumatic rupture being the most severe complication. In cases of spontaneous rupture,clinical manifestations consist of sudden abdominal pain,and anemia secondary to ahaemoperitoneum. Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy can also occur. Haemodynamic instability and signs of hypovolemic shock appear in about one third of cases. As the size of the hemangioma increases,so does the chance of rupture. Imaging studies used in the diagnosis of hepatic hemangiomas include ultrasonography,dynamic contrast-enchanced computed tomography scanning,magnetic resonance imaging,hepatic arteriography,digital subtraction angiography,and nuclear medicine studies. In most cases hepatic hemangiomas are asymptomatic and should be followed up by means of periodic radiological examination. Sur gery should be restricted to specific situations. Absolute indications for surgery are spontaneous or trau m atic rupture with hemoperitoneum,intratumoral blee ding and consumptive coagulopathy (Kassabach-Merrit syndrome). In a patient presenting with acute abdo minal pain due to unknown abdominal disease,sponta neous rupture of a hepatic tumor such as a hemangio ma should be considered as a rare differential diagnosis.

High mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system:regeneration hidden beneath inflammation

High-mobility group box 1 was first discovered in the calf thymus as a DNA-binding nuclear protein and has been widely studied in diverse fields,including neurology and ***-mobility group box 1 in the extracellular space functions as a pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular pattern,which has been proven to play an important role in a wide variety of central nervous system disorders such as ischemic stroke,Alzheimer’s disease,frontotemporal dementia,Parkinson’s disease,multiple sclerosis,epilepsy,and traumatic brain *** drugs that inhibit high-mobility group box 1 as a damage-associated molecular pattern,such as glycyrrhizin,ethyl pyruvate,and neutralizing anti-high-mobility group box 1 antibodies,are commonly used to target high-mobility group box 1 activity in central nervous system *** it is commonly known for its detrimental inflammatory effect,high-mobility group box 1 has also been shown to have beneficial pro-regenerative roles in central nervous system *** this narrative review,we provide a brief summary of the history of high-mobility group box 1 research and its characterization as a damage-associated molecular pattern,its downstream receptors,and intracellular signaling pathways,how high-mobility group box 1 exerts the repair-favoring roles in general and in the central nervous system,and clues on how to differentiate the pro-regenerative from the pro-inflammatory *** targeting high-mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system may benefit from differentiating between the two functions rather than overall suppression of high-mobility group box 1.

Rehabilitation is the most effective way to reduce motor impairments in post-stroke *** process demands several hours with a specialized *** resources and personnel shortages,the literature reports a high interest in robotic assisted rehabilitation ***,cable-driven robotic architectures are attracting significant research interest for post-stroke ***,the existing cable-driven robots are mostly unilateral devices allowing the rehabilitation only of the most affected *** leaves unaddressed the rehabilitation of bimanual activities,which are predominant within the common Activities of Daily Living(ADL).Thus,this paper presents a specific novel design to achieve bimanual rehabilitation tasks that has been named as BiCAR ***,this paper provides a full insight on the BiCAR system as well as on its dedicated developed software *** particular,BiEval software has been developed as based on a serious game strategy and a virtual reality environment to track the patient exercising duration,motion ranges,speeds,and forces over time for achieving a quantitative assessment of the rehabilitation ***,the paper presents the BiCAR/BiEval capabilities by referring to a pilot Randomized Controlled Trial(RCT).The clinical trials have been used to validate the BiCAR/BiEval in terms of engineering feasibility and user acceptance to achieve an innovative cost-oriented integrated hardware/software device for the bimanual assistive rehabilitation of post-stroke patients.

In this note, we show that a certain Wecken type property holds, i.e., if the Nielsen number N(f, g) vanishes then f and g are deformable to be coincidence free. We also show that if X is a connected finite complex X and the Reidemeister coincidence number R(f, g) = ∞ then f ～ f' so that C(f', g) = {x ∈ X | f'(x) = g(x)} is empty.

Using Extreme Value Theory to Assess the Mortality Risk of Tornado Outbreaks

The majority of tornado fatalities occur during severe thunderstorm occurrences that produce a large number of tornadoes,termed tornado *** study used extreme value theory to estimate the impact of tornado outbreaks on fatalities while accounting for climate and demographic *** findings indicate that the number of fatalities increases with the increase of tornado ***,this study undertook a counterfactual analysis to determine what would have been the probability of a tornado outbreak under various climatic and demographic *** results of the counterfactual study indicate that the likelihood of increased mortality increases as the population forecast *** El Niño events,on the other hand,reduce the likelihood of further *** Niña events are expected to increase probability of fatalities.

Histological Assessment of Bone Regeneration in the Maxilla with Homologous Bone Graft:A Feasible Option for Maxillary Bone Reconstruction

Bone biomaterials have been increasingly used to reconstruct maxillary atrophic ***,the aim of this study was to evaluate bone reconstruction in the maxilla using a homologous cortico-cancellous FFB(lyophilized)graft and verify its *** individuals were included from 2014 to *** first surgery was performed to install homologous bone blocks in the *** period of the second intervention varied between 5 months and 15 days to 11 months(≈7.93 months).The biopsies were taken from the central region of the matured graft during the surgery for implant *** patients presented clinical and radiographic conditions for the installation of dental *** was a 100%of survival *** histological assessment showed that the homologous block bone graft was an osteoconductive biomaterial,with connective tissue present,and newly formed bone juxtaposed on its *** were bone trabeculae with osteocytes and active osteoblasts with connective tissue in the mineralization process;the remodeling process can be found through the reverse lines.A limited focus of necrosis with fibrosis was detected,with small resorption and areas of inflammatory infiltrate,but without clinical *** homologous block bone graft can be considered a feasible option to substitute the autogenous bone graft(gold standard),with predictable clinical and favorable histological *** patients had a shorter surgical period,low morbidity,and an unlimited amount of biomaterial available at an accessible cost.

The intra and extracellular pathways of hepatic injury by coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)are still being *** them is important to treat this viral disease and other liver and biliary tract ***,this paper aims to present three hypotheses about liver injury caused by COVID-19:(1)The interactions between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein and membrane receptors in the hepatocyte;(2)The dysbiosis and"gutliver axis"disruption in patients with serious clinical presentations of COVID-19;and(3)The inflammatory response exacerbated through the production of interleukins such as ***,despite these new perspectives,the pathophysiological process of liver injury caused by COVID-19 is still complex and ***,understanding all these variables is a challenge to science but also the key to propose individualized and effective patient therapies.

Using risk-benefit analysis to control Salmonella in chicken meat

We have created a risk-benefit analysis(RBA)model to assist in food safety decision-making by analyzing Salmonella control in Brazilian chicken ***,we described the issues in a risk profile and used a 5x5 matrix to rank the risks associated with *** then classified the magnitude of benefits and costs of control measures using another ***,we verified the beneficial effects of recommended control measures using Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment(QMRA).The RBA classified Salmonella contamination as risk 6,indicating that control measures should be taken in the short and medium *** also recommended the adoption of biosecurity measures on farms to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella in birds,better control of carcass washings and chiller tank management,and information placement on packages and campaigns to raise the awareness of the population about the need to control Salmonella contamination before *** the other hand,it did not recommend better controls at scalding and *** confirmed the beneficial effects of the recommended control *** example,as Salmonella prevalence in poultry increased from 4.04 per cent to 50 per cent,the risk of infection per serving also increased from 0.0080 to *** better controls in washings and chiller tank management did not affect the risk of infection,it reduced Salmonella counts on *** assume that the presence of Salmonella on carcasses was due to improper thermal processing or cross-contamination,which increased the risk from 0.0080 to *** RBA demonstrated the logic involved in the adoption of control measures,and this can be helpful in the risk management of food safety issues.

Alzheimer's disease is a severe, highly disabling neurodegenerative disease, clinically characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions, and is the most common form of dementia in the elderly. For decades, the search for disease-modifying therapies has focused on the two main Alzheimer's disease histopathological hallmarks, seeking to prevent, mitigate, or clear the formation of extracellular aggregates of β-amyloid peptide and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein, although without clinical success. Mesenchymal stem cell-based therapy has emerged as a promising alternative for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, especially because it also targets other crucial players in the pathogenesis of the disease, such as neuroinflammation, synaptic dysfunction/loss, oxidative stress, and impaired neurogenesis. Herein, we review current knowledge of the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells and their extracellular vesicles for Alzheimer's disease, discussing the most recent findings in both preclinical and clinical trials as well as how advanced technologies have helped to overcome some limitations and contributed to stimulate the development of more effective treatments.
