Wine residues extracts modulating in vitro metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is considered a worldwide epidemic health problem. The manifestations include obesity, dyslipidemias, elevation of arterial blood pressure, and insulin resistance. The wine waste is composed mainly of skin, seed and grape pomace, and is a source of phenolic compounds. Previous studies have demonstrated that grape phenolic compounds have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, acting directly in the pathogenic process of several diseases. In order to improve the bioavailability and bioactivity of these compounds, enzymatic biotransformation reactions were *** aimed of this work was to evaluate whether phenolic extracts produced with wine waste by biotransformation with Tannase (tannin acyl hydrolase), were able to attenuate the metabolic syndrome manifestations like oxidative stress and reduce the inflammatory parameters in vitro *** different extracts were produced and the non-citotoxic concentrations of samples used (100, 200 and 500 μg/mL) were determined by MTT assay. The inflammatory response was induced in macrophages (RAW 264.7) culture using LPS (Lipopolysaccharide). The biotransformed extracts were able to reduce the TNF-α cell culture supernatant concentration by about 44%;and the IL-6 secretion was reduced by 82%. All the extracts demonstrate efficacy in reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the same was observed for NO (nitric oxide) concentration in the cell culture supernatant after the administration of extracts. These results indicated the strong potential of employing phenolic wine waste extracts on the modulation of metabolic syndrome parameters, use that also brings environmental and socioeconomic advantages, since it brings an alternative for the use of residues.

Exploring the Potential of Mapping Cropping Patterns on Smallholder Scale Croplands Using Sentinel-1 SAR Data

It is of paramount importance to have sustainable agriculture since agriculture is the backbone of many nations’ economic development. Majority of agricultural professionals rarely capture the cropping patterns necessary to promote Good Agricultural *** of this research is to explore the potential of mapping cropping patterns occurring on different field parcels on small-scale farmlands in Zimbabwe. The first study location under investigation are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center(CIMMYT) research station and a few neighboring fields, the second is Middle Sabi Estate. Fourier time series modeling was implemented to determine the trends befalling on the two study sites. Results reveal that Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar(SAR) time series allow detection of subtle changes that occur to the crops and fields respectively, hence can be utilized to detect cropping patterns on small-scale farmlands. Discrimination of the main crops(maize and soybean) grown at CIMMYT was possible, and crop rotation was synthesized where sowing starts in November. A single cropping of early and late crops was observed, there were no winter crops planted during the investigation period. At Middle Sabi Estate, single cropping on perennial sugarcane fields and triple cropping of fields growing leafy vegetables, tomatoes and onions were observed. Classification of stacked images was used to derive the crop rotation maps representing what is practised at the farming lands. Random forest classification of the multi-temporal image stacks achieved overall accuracies of 99% and 95% on the respective study sites. In conclusion, Sentinel-1 time series can be implemented effectively to map the cropping patterns and crop rotations occurring on small-scale farming land. We recommend the use of Sentinel-1 SAR multi-temporal data to spatially explicitly map cropping patterns of single-, double-and triple-cropping systems on both small-scale and large-scale farming area

neuromuscular disease caused by the homozygous mutation or deletion of the survival motor neuron 1(SMN1)gene.A second copy,SMN2,is similar to SMN1,but produces only~10%SMN protein because of a single-point mutation(C>T)in coding exon 7 causing a splicing defect which leads to the exclusion of exon 7,resulting in a majority(~90%)of transcripts lacking exon 7 that translate into mutant SMN(SMNΔ7)*** is caused by chronic low levels of SMN and is characterized by the degeneration of the spinal cord motor neurons leading to symmetrical skeletal muscle atrophy,respiratory failure,and death(Ahmad et al.,2012).Chronic low levels of SMN cause the accumulation of pathogenic R-loops and double-stranded breaks(DSBs)in DNA,leading to genomic instability and neurodegeneration in SMA(Kannan et al.,2018).The severity of SMA disease correlates inversely with SMN levels.

Dipole (hyper)polarizabilities of neutral silver clusters

At the Douglas-Kroll-Hess （DKI4） level, the B3PW91 functional along with the all-eleclron relativistic basis sets of valence triple and quadruple zeta qualities are used to determine the structure, stability, and electronic properties of the small silver clusters （Agn, n ≤ 7）. The results presented in this study are in good agreement with the experimental data and theoretical values obtained at a higher level of theory from the literature. Static polarizability and hyperpolarizability are also reported. It is verified that the mean dipole polarizability per atom exhibits an odd-even oscillation and that the polarizability anisotropy is directly related to the cluster shape. In this article, the first study of hyperpolarizabilities of small silver clusters is presented. Except for the monomer, the second hyperpolarizabilities of the silver clusters are significantly larger than those of the copper clusters.

Leaf water potential and gas exchange of eucalypt clonal seedlings to leaf solar protectant

This experiment was carried out in acclimatized greenhouses with seedlings of two hybrid clones of Eucalyptus urophylla×Eucalyptus grandis. A sunscreen protector consisting of 62.5% calcium carbonate was sprayed on the seedlings at weekly intervals. Water stress was induced by suspending irrigation until the soil reached 30% available water and water was then replaced so that it returned to field capacity. Gas exchange and leaf water status were measured after 50 days. The experiment was set up in a 4×2 factorial randomized block design in four distinct environments:(1) temperatures less than 21.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.15 kPa;(2) intermediate temperatures of 24.2℃ and vapor pressure deficit of 0.69 kPa;(3) high temperatures of 27.0℃ and high vapor pressure deficit of 1.4 kPa; and,(4) high temperature of 27.0℃ and vapor pressure deficit below 1.10 kPa. Two leaf sun protector treatments were used, with five replications each. High atmospheric demand acted as a stress factor for the seedlings during the initial growth *** of leaf sunscreen protector provided beneficial effects in maintaining optimum water status and gas exchanges of the plants under water stress.

Altered electroencephalographic networks in developmental dyslexia after remedial training:a prospective case-control study

Discontinuation of antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis B patients

Conscience imperative of providing information and knowledge in hepatology:The Portuguese approach

The last 25 years have been a thrilling time for the Portuguese hepatologists. Our national meetings have been providing the forum for the exchange of scientific ideas and the presentation of clinical research in clinical Hepatology, a growing world of knowledge in medical care. Bridging the gaps between technology and clinical daily practice, the latest development and the almost humble bedside care, has been a challenge for the increasing numbers of doctors devoted to the diagnostic and treatment of liver disease. We have been trying to be very persuasive among the Portuguese medical community in demonstrating that cultural vectors may influence the origin and pattern of liver disease among us. Viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease are paradigms of this assumption. Chronic liver disease is responsible for 3% of the deaths in Portugal, which accounts for the top ten causes of death in our country. The recognition by public health authorities of this fact along with the national net of hepatology outpatient consultation in public hospitals, has brought liver diseases under the lights of doctors concerns and an increased public awareness of its dimension.
