Fish diversity reduction and assemblage structure homogenization in lakes:A case study on unselective fishing in China

Unselective fishing involves activities that target the entire assemblage rather than specific fish species,size classes,or trophic *** common fishing approach has been in practice for decades in inland waters in China but its implications for biodiversity remain *** addressed this issue by studying fish assemblages in freshwater lakes(five fishing lakes,one reference lake,and a total of 51 sampling sites)between pre-and postfishing time-periods in Eastern China during 2017–*** effects of lake,fishing period,and their interactions on fish abundance,biomass,and diversity indices were *** analysis was conducted to test for differences in fish assemblages among lakes and between fishing *** the implementation of fishing activities,significant reductions in fish species richness,abundance,biomass,and all three life-history strategies(opportunistic,equilibrium,and periodic)were observed in fishing lakes,whereas opposite trends were observed in the reference *** similarity of fish assemblages among fishing lakes increased over the threeyear monitoring *** results suggest that unselective fishing reduces fish diversity and homogenizes fish assemblage structure in *** findings have important implications for protecting both biodiversity and fisheries in inland waters in China and are applicable to other countries or regions that rely on fish as a major food source.

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions combine the phenomena of quantum-mechanical tunnelling and switchable spontaneous polarisation of a nanometre-thick ferroelectric film into novel device *** the ferroelectric barrier polarisation direction produces a sizable change in resistance of the junction—a phenomenon known as the tunnelling electroresistance *** a fundamental perspective,ferroelectric tunnel junctions and their version with ferromagnetic electrodes,i.e.,multiferroic tunnel junctions,are testbeds for studying the underlying mechanisms of tunnelling electroresistance as well as the interplay between electric and magnetic degrees of freedom and their effect on *** a practical perspective,ferroelectric tunnel junctions hold promise for disruptive device *** a very short time,they have traversed the path from basic model predictions to prototypes for novel non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories with non-destructive *** remarkable progress is to a large extent driven by a productive cycle of predictive modelling and innovative experimental *** this review article,we outline the development of the ferroelectric tunnel junction concept and the role of theoretical modelling in guiding experimental *** discuss a wide range of physical phenomena that control the functional properties of ferroelectric tunnel junctions and summarise the state-of-the-art achievements in the field.

The presence ofα/αon priorβ/βgrain boundaries directly impacts the final mechanical properties of the titanium ***β/βgrain boundary variant selection of titanium alloys has been assumed to be unlikely owing to the high cooling rates in laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF).However,we hypothesize that powder characteristics such as morphology(non-spherical)and particle size(50–120μm)could affect the initial variant selection in L-PBF processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy by locally altering the cooling *** the high cooling rate found in L-PBF,results showed the presence ofβ/βgrain boundaryαlath growth inside two adjacent priorβ*** backscatter diffraction micrographs confirmed the presence ofβ/βgrain boundary variant selection,and synchrotron X-ray high-speed imaging observation revealed the role of the“shadowing effect”on the locally decreased cooling rate because of keyhole depth reduction and the consequentβ/βgrain boundaryαlath *** self-accommodation mechanism was the main variant selection driving force,and the most abundantα/αboundary variant was type 4(63.26°//[10553¯]).The dominance of Category IIαlath clusters associated with the type 4α/αboundary variant was validated using the phenomenological theory of martensite transformations and analytical calculations,from which the stress needed for theβ→αtransformation was calculated.

Monitoring spatiotemporal soil moisture changes in the subsurface of forest sites using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT)

The effects of drought on tree mortality at forest stands are not completely understood. For assessing their water supply, knowledge of the small-scale distribution of soil moisture as well as its temporal changes is a key issue in an era of climate change. However, traditional methods like taking soil samples or installing data loggers solely collect parameters of a single point or of a small soil volume. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a suitable method for monitoring soil moisture changes and has rarely been used in forests. This method was applied at two forest sites in Bavaria, Germany to obtain high-resolution data of temporal soil moisture variations. Geoelectrical measurements (2d and 3d) were conducted at both sites over several years (2015-2018/2020) and compared with soil moisture data (matric potential or volumetric water content) for the monitoring plots. The greatest variations in resistivity values that highly correlate with soil moisture data were found in the main rooting zone. Using the ERT data, temporal trends could be tracked in several dimensions, such as the interannual increase in the depth of influence from drought events and their duration, as well as rising resistivity values going along with decreasing soil moisture. The results reveal that resistivity changes are a good proxy for seasonal and interannual soil moisture variations. Therefore, 2d- and 3d-ERT are recommended as comparatively non-laborious methods for small-spatial scale monitoring of soil moisture changes in the main rooting zone and the underlying subsurface of forested sites. Higher spatial and temporal resolution allows a better understanding of the water supply for trees, especially in times of drought.

Associations between Bodyweight and Clinical Outcome in Patients Post-Fontan Procedure: A Systematic Review

Background: Patients born with a single ventricle circulation commonly experience growth failure in early life,which is associated with adverse outcomes in infancy. However, associations between bodyweight or weight trajectoryand clinical outcome post-Fontan procedure are yet to be determined. Methods: On the 1st of July 2021, asystematic review was performed in MEdLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus of studies of patientswith clinical outcome data post-Fontan procedure and association with bodyweight. Quality of studies was evaluatedby Newcastle–Ottawa scale for cohort studies and Joanna Briggs Institute tool for cross-sectional ***: Of 527 studies that underwent title and abstract screening, 15 were selected for final review. An increasedrisk of adverse post-Fontan outcomes was found for low weight patients, consistent with findings in *** there is some evidence to suggest increased mortality in overweight adult patients, studies are conflictingas to whether overweight status is associated with increased heart failure. Increased BMI is associated with diminishedexercise capacity and deceased physiological functioning. Negative weight trajectory is associated withadverse outcomes in the peri-Fontan period, whereas a positive weight trajectory is associated with increased Fontanfailure in adulthood. Abnormal BMI (high or low) is associated with increased heart failure and poorer performancein quality-of-life scores. Conclusions: Bodyweight is a modifiable risk factor for poor clinical outcomein patients with a single ventricle circulation. Recognizing associations between bodyweight and Fontan pathophysiologymay help to define patient-centered exercise and diet interventions that minimize patient morbidityand mortality.

Nickel nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes are a highly active,selective and stable CO_(2) methanation catalyst

CO_(2) methanation using nickel-based catalysts has attracted large interest as a promising power-to-gas *** nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped CNTs with Ni loadings in the range from 10 wt% to 50 wt% were synthesized by impregnation,calcination and reduction and characterized by elemental analysis,X-ray powder diffraction,H_(2) temperature-programmed reduction,CO pulse chemisorption and transmission electron *** Ni/NCNT catalysts were highly active in CO_(2) methanation at atmospheric pressure,reaching over 50% CO_(2) conversion and over 95% CH_(4) selectivity at 340℃ and a GHSV of50,000 mL g^(-1) h^(-1) under kinetically controlled *** small Ni particle sizes below 10 nm despite the high Ni loading is ascribed to the efficient anchoring on the N-doped *** optimum loading of 30 wt%-40 wt% Ni was found to result in the highest Ni surface area,the highest degree of conversion and the highest selectivity to methane.A constant TOF of 0.3 s^(-1) was obtained indicating similar catalytic properties of the Ni nanoparticles in the range from 10 wt%to 50 wt% Ni ***-term experiments showed that the Ni/NCNT catalyst with 30 wt% Ni was highly stable for 100 h time on stream.

High-Frequency Rayleigh-Wave Method

High-frequency （〉2 Hz） Rayleigh-wave data acquired with a multichannel recording system have been utilized to determine shear （S）-wave velocities in near-surface geophysics since the early 1980s. This overview article discusses the main research results of high-frequency surface-wave techniques achieved by research groups at the Kansas Geological Survey and China University of Geosciences in the last 15 years. The multichannel analysis of surface wave （MASW） method is a non-invasive acoustic approach to estimate near-surface S-wave velocity. The differences between MASW results and direct borehole measurements are approximately 15% or less and random. Studies show that simultaneous inversion with higher modes and the fundamental mode can increase model resolution and an investigation depth. The other important seismic property, quality factor （Q）, can also be estimated with the MASW method by inverting attenuation coefficients of Rayleigh waves. An inverted model （S-wave velocity or Q） obtained using a damped least-squares method can be assessed by an optimal damping vector in a vicinity of the inverted model determined by an objective function, which is the trace of a weighted sum of model-resolution and model-covariance matrices. Current developments include modeUng high-frequency Rayleigh-waves in near-surface media, which builds a foundation for shallow seismic or Rayleigh-wave inversion in the time-offset domain; imaging dispersive energy with high resolution in the frequency-velocity domain and possibly with data in an arbitrary acquisition geometry, which opens a door for 3d surface-wave techniques; and successfully separating surface-wave modes, which provides a valuable tool to perform S-wave velocity profiling with high-horizontal resolution.

Interactome Analysis of Microtubule-targeting Agents Reveals Cytotoxicity Bases in Normal Cells

Cancer causes millions of deaths annually and microtubule-targeting agents （MTAs） are the most commonly-used anti-cancer drugs. However, the high toxicity of MTAs on normal cells raises great concern. due to the non-selectivity of MTA targets, we analyzed the interaction net- work in a non-cancerous human cell. Subnetworks of fourteen MTAs were reconstructed and the merged network was compared against a randomized network to evaluate the functional rich- ness. We found that 71.4% of the MTA interactome nodes are shared, which affects cellular pro- cesses such as apoptosis, cell differentiation, cell cycle control, stress response, and regulation of energy metabolism. Additionally, possible secondary targets were identified as client proteins of interphase microtubules. MTAs affect apoptosis signaling pathways by interacting with client pro- teins of interphase microtubules, suggesting that their primary targets are non-tumor cells. The paclitaxel and doxorubicin networks share essential topological axes, suggesting synergistic effects. This may explain the exacerbated toxicity observed when paclitaxel and doxorubicin are used in combination for cancer treatment.
