Effects of Yerba Mate Consumption (Ilex paraguariensis) on Cardiac Remodeling in Rats

This study investigated the effects of yerba mate consumption, a South American beverage, on cardiac remodeling in rats. For this purpose, 24 male Wistar rats were divided into Control Group (CG) which received filtered water and a standard diet, and Yerba Mate Group (YM), 6 g of Ilex paraguariensis in 100 ml water and the same diet, for 30 days. The YM group showed a reduction in final body weight and food consumption without altering weight gain. Regarding cardiac remodeling, the YM group exhibited a decrease in the right ventricle weight/final body weight ratio, suggesting cardiac atrophy, without affecting the atria and left ventricle. There was no change in cardiomyocyte area or nuclear fractal dimension in both groups. However, animals that consumed yerba mate showed increased collagen deposition and a smaller fractal dimension in the left ventricle. The consumption of yerba mate at room temperature for 30 days induced changes in cardiac remodeling, as evidenced by increased collagen deposition and alterations in fractal dimension in the left ventricle.

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

The by-catch fauna of the shrimp fishery includes a number of marine invertebrates that are discarded because they do not have commercial *** order to try to add some value to these materials,we analyzed the chemical composition of the starfish Luidia senegalensis collected in the Brazilian coast as a consequence of the trawling fishery *** order to access their chemical composition,we used a combination of solid phase extraction(SPE)followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization ion trap tandem mass spectrometry(UPLC-ESI-IT-MSn).Luidia sene-galensis contains asterosaponins,which are sulphated glycosilated steroids,containing five and six sugar moieties,in addition to *** study helped us to support the presence of important and potentially bioactive compounds in invertebrates associated to the by-catch fauna of the shrimp fishery,using a fast and efficient method.

Phenytoin Induced Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS): Case Report

Background: Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition. It presents a long prodromal period, extensive rash, fever, lymphadenopathy, hematologic abnormalities (eosinophilia with or without atypical lymphocytosis), and internal organ involvement. Purpose: To describe a case of phenytoin induced DRESS syndrome, presenting diagnostic and management challenges of clinical interest. Methods: The Consensus-based Clinical Case Reporting Guideline Development (CARE) was observed for data analysis in case reports. Case Report: A 22-year-old man, using phenytoin for 60 days, sought medical attention due to fever and maculopapular cutaneous lesions. He presented lymphocytosis with eosinophilia and severe acute hepatitis 24 hours after admission day. Hepatic transaminases returned to reference levels after phenytoin withdrawal, and eosinophilia and cutaneous manifestations did not respond well to systemic steroids. A forearm biopsy showed findings suggestive of severe cutaneous adverse reaction. The patient’s microscopic and clinical characteristics meet all criteria in the scoring systems of Bocquet et al., Registry of Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reaction (RegiSCAR), and Japanese Research Committee on Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reaction (J-SCAR), being highly suggestive of DRESS syndrome very probably caused by phenytoin. The complete remission of symptoms was achieved weeks after admission. Conclusions: DRESS syndrome is a defiant reaction. Clinicians must be aware of potential causative drugs and perform a complete clinical examination using the available resources, including laboratory tests and histopathological assessment. The clinical remission relies on the withdrawal of the culprit drug. Particular attention should be given to the involvement of internal organs.

The occurrence of antimicrobials in the aquatic environment and drinking water has raised the question of their impact on the environment and public health. Animal production is one of the most expressive activities of Brazilian agribusiness. In order to ensure the productivity and competitiveness of the sector, the use of drugs for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes is a common practice. Due to the continuous release of antimicrobials into the environment, the aim of this study was to compare the frequency of detection of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in surface water collected from rural areas in Lidice District of Rio Claro, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An investigative study was conducted with 24 river water samples analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry and the aim of this study was to determine residues of sulfonamides and tetracyclines based on the USEPA method 1694. The results indicated the presence of sulfamethoxazole and oxytetracycline concentrations at the ng·L-1 level. The applied method showed overall good performance with recoveries above 57%, method detection limits ≤ 7.17 ng·L-1, method quantification limits ≤ 23.90 ng·L-1 and good linearity.

Gait, posture and transfer assessment among elderly practitioners and non-practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan

Falls may be devastating events among elderly people. Tai Chi Chuan is a type of moderate sports exercise that demonstrates improvements in balance, gait and posture. The aim here was to assess the influence of this method on the balance, gait and posture of healthy active elderly people. A controlled cross-sectional study was conducted on 76 volunteers, divided into two groups: 51 volunteers Tai Chi Chuan group mean age 76.8 years and 25 volunteers control group mean age 70.3 years. Both groups underwent the Modified Clinical Test on Sensory Interaction for Balance (mCTSIB), Walking Test (WT), Sit-to-Stand Transfer Test (SSTT) and Unipedal Assessment Test (UT), using the Neurocom Balance Master system. Result: In conditions Static balance tests: the mCTSIB-Tai-Chi Group had a lower sway velocity (°/s) on a firm surface with eyes open and medio-lateral direction, Foam Surface with eyes open medio-lateral and anteroposterior direction. Unilateral Stance Tai-Chi Group had a lower mean sway velocity (°/s) with open eyes (right and left), but with eyes closed. The Control Group showed a lower sway velocity. Under Dynamic Balance: Walk Across Test Tai-Chi Group presented a walking speed greater than the Control Group. In Sit to Stand Transfer Test, Tai-Chi Group showed a better index rising to lift up and lower oscillation in the final standing position. Conclusion: The Tai Chi Group was shown to be a protection factor for preserving and maintaining the static and dynamic positions of posture and gait.

Influence of Photoperiod over Morphometric and Hematological Parameters of Juvenile Piracanjubas （Brycon orbygnianus）

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphometric and hematological parameters of juveniles Piracanjubas treated with two distinct photoperiod. Twenty nine fish with 100 g, in a factorial design were performed in 18 h light：6 h dark （18L：6D） and 6L：lSD two different photoperiod, and morphometric and hematological parameters were evaluated at 45 d and 90 d after photoperiod treatment. Benzocaine 1% was used for euthanasia. Fish were weighed and measured, so as visceral fat, liver and gonads. Hematocrit, total count of white cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils were counted. Results showed that there was no significant relationship between bodyweight and standard length. Significant interaction （P = 0.00018） had been found between the fat index （FI） and gonado-somatic index （GSI） and the photoperiod and time. At 90 d, the fish kept in 18L：6D had a lower rate of fat than the fish kept in 6L：18D （P 〈 0.05）. The GSI was higher in the group 6L.＇18D compared with the 18L：6D （P 〈 0.005）. There was no interaction between photoperiod and period of treatment for total leukocyte count, however with 90 d, the total leukocyte count was decreased （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, decrease of the hematocrit from 58.1% to 46.9% and an increase of lymphocytes from 31.5% to 43.5% had been found in fish kept in 18L：6D after 90 d （P 〈 0.05）. Fish kept in 6L：ISD presented an increase in segmented neutrophils and lymphocytes （P 〈 0.05）. It is concluded that photoperiod maintained at 6L： 18D for Piracanjubas permits a greater gonadal development and an amount of immune cells over the photoperiod maintained in 18L： 6D.

Does Locomotive Syndrome, Associated with Sarcopenia or otherwise, Influence Quality of Life in Individuals Aged over 80 years? Third Wave of the LOCOMOV Project

Introduction:Locomotion is a determinant of intrinsic capacity of older people and can be limited by dysfunction in locomotory organs,characterizing Locomotive Syndrome(LoS).Knowledge on locomotive problems and sarcopenia,and their interface with quality of life,in the oldest old in the literature is ***:To evaluate the correlation between LoS and sarcopenia and their influence on quality of life in oldest ***:A cross-sectional study of an observational,descriptive and analytical epidemiological survey in independent older adults aged 80 and over from São Paulo,Brazil and who participated in the third wave of the LOCOMOV Project,was carried *** data,comorbidities,functioning in activities of daily living,physical functioning,quality of life,and presence of sarcopenia and LoS were *** statistical analyses included the Test-for-Comparing-Two-Proportions,Pearson's Correlation Coefficient,the chi-Square test and Student´s ***:Thirty oldest old with a mean age of 89.1 years were *** prevalence of LoS was high(53.3%)and correlated significantly with chronic pain(p-value 0.024),worse performance on the SPPB and Gait speed(p-value<0.001).Sarcopenia was not correlated with LoS,but worse quality of life on the physical domain was significantly associated with LoS(p-value<0.001)regardless of the presence of ***:LoS was highly prevalent among the oldest old studied and negatively impacted their quality of life,regardless of the presence of sarcopenia.
