Energy simulation is a valuable tool for evaluating and improving the thermal performance and energy efficiency of buildings during the design *** evaluation methods are thermal load(TL),degree-hour(DH),and design days(DD).The choice of method and its settings may vary depending on regional factors and researchers’preferences,leading to diverse and often incompatible metrics and ***,this study aims to investigate the influence of these evaluation methods on the assessment of buildings’performance and,consequently,on design *** this purpose,this study compared the results of the 3 evaluation methods and different settings for 3 different wall systems,4 ranges of comfort temperature,and 2 residential models located in the 8 Brazilian bioclimatic *** result,the best and worst wall systems varied depending on the evaluation method and the threshold/setpoint temperature range *** regions showed greater variability in the *** noticed that it is not possible to compare and interpret results from different evaluation methods,and that the variation of only 1℃in the setpoint temperatures can lead to entirely different practices being considered the best for a given building *** conclusion,the most suitable evaluation method is the one that best portrays the operation and dynamic reality of the building to be designed,and building regulations and standards can occasionally lead to unrealistic assessments.

Rhizosphere soil samples of three Pinus chiapensis sites were analyzed for their physicochemical properties,soil bacteria isolated and screened in vitro for growthpromoting *** isolates that showed promise were identified to five genera Dyella,Luteimonas,Euterobacter,Paraburkholderia and Bacillus based on the sequences of16 S rRNA *** the strains were isolated from nondisturbed *** bacteria significantly decreased germination time and increased sprout *** acetic acid and gibberellin production and phosphate solubilisation were *** indicate that these biochemicals could be essential for *** distribution and suggest the possibility that PGPR inoculation on *** seeds prior to planting could improve germination and possibly seedling development.

The fossil record of birds from Antarctica is concentrated in the James Ross Basin,located in north-east of the Antarctic *** are here represented by an extensive Paleogene record of penguins(Sphenisciformes)and Cretaceous–Paleogene record of Anseriformes,followed by other groups with a minor representation(Procellariiformes,Falconiformes,and Pelagornithidae),and others previously assigned controversially to“Ratites”,Threskiornithidae,Charadriiformes,Gruiformes,Phoenicopteriformes,and *** provide a complete update of these records,commenting on the importance of some of these remains for the evolution of the major clades.

Objective: To analyze the body mass index (BMI) as an indicator of metabolic alterations, including the metabolic syndrome (MetS), at both individual level and public health level. Method: We recruited 3683 undergraduate students (17 - 24 years old) from México City identifying metabolic alterations, including the MetS, and comparing its prevalence by BMI ranges. We applied a sensitivity analysis to define BMI optimal cut-off point values. Results: We found 14.6% of MetS prevalence with a BMI average of 24.2%, and 34.5% of overweight prevalence (BMI ≥ 25). A BMI cut-off point value of 22.5 is suggested as an upper limit of a normal weight condition, only for public health purpose;while at individual level the BMI cut-off point of 25 was corroborated as the upper limit for a normal weight condition. A public health tool to estimate the MetS prevalence based on BMI percentages is proposed, and a study case is presented. Conclusion: BMI fails predicting at individual level both, healthy condition or metabolic alterations, when values are lower than 25. At population level, the BMI is a valuable public health tool to estimate MetS prevalence: based on the prevalence of MetS by BMI ranges of a sample of the population.

The Scenario of Lean Product Development in Brazilian Auto-industry

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of lean product development （LPD） in the Brazilian automotive sector. A mailed-questionnaire survey was used to examine 23 questions about LPD principles and practices. The target population for the study was Brazil＇s largest product development and design companies. The study identified that although the automobile sector is seen as a reference in the adoption of lean practices, there is still potential for improvement by establishing partnership relations with suppliers, and with those on the other points of the chain by identifying what provides value to clients. Set-based concurrent engineering is also a practice that needs to be better developed, as well as the value stream mapping tool to identify waste and activities that add value to the product development process. There has been no previous study of this nature in Brazil that characterizes the sector and highlights its importance in relation to the global scene, providing incentives to international investors. The value of the work is in the results that allow diagnosing the lean development practices that are most used in the automotive sector. Moreover, the survey questions can be applied in other economic sectors and at companies of other sizes. The study contributed to providing a systematic view of the product development process from the perspective of people, processes, and technology, and assists companies and academics manage change.

We report a case of a haemodialysis patient that presented a catheter-related bacteraemia caused by a Coagulase negative Staphylococcus. With the utilization of molecular biology techniques the bacterial isolate recovered from catheter was surprisingly identified as S. hominis by sequencing of the 16S ribosomal gene. The S. hominis isolate, which is not often associated with infections in dialysis patients, was resistant to methicillin, being mecA positive, and to daptomycin. The patient was successfully treated with vancomycin together with the catheter retirement.

The occurrence of antimicrobials in the aquatic environment and drinking water has raised the question of their impact on the environment and public health. Animal production is one of the most expressive activities of Brazilian agribusiness. In order to ensure the productivity and competitiveness of the sector, the use of drugs for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes is a common practice. Due to the continuous release of antimicrobials into the environment, the aim of this study was to compare the frequency of detection of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in surface water collected from rural areas in Lidice District of Rio Claro, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An investigative study was conducted with 24 river water samples analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry and the aim of this study was to determine residues of sulfonamides and tetracyclines based on the USEPA method 1694. The results indicated the presence of sulfamethoxazole and oxytetracycline concentrations at the ng·L-1 level. The applied method showed overall good performance with recoveries above 57%, method detection limits ≤ 7.17 ng·L-1, method quantification limits ≤ 23.90 ng·L-1 and good linearity.

AIM To evaluate thresholds for serum 25(OH)D concentrations in relation to death, kidney progression and hospitalization in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease(CKD) *** Four hundred and seventy non-dialysis 3-5 stage CKD patients participating in OSERCE-2 study, a prospective, multicenter, cohort study, were prospectively evaluated and categorized into 3 groups according to 25(OH)D levels at enrollment(less than 20 ng/mL, between 20 and 29 ng/mL, and at or above 30 ng/mL), considering 25(OH)D between 20 and 29 ng/mL as reference group. Association between 25(OH)D levels and death(primary outcome), and time to first hospitalization and renal progression(secondary outcomes) over a 3-year followup, were assessed by Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox-proportional hazard models. To identify 25(OH)D levels at highest risk for outcomes, receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves were *** Over 29 ± 12 mo of follow-up, 46(10%) patients dead, 156(33%) showed kidney progression, and 126(27%) were hospitalized. After multivariate adjustment, 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality(HR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.10-4.91; P = 0.027) and kidney progression(HR = 2.46; 95%CI: 1.63-3.71; P < 0.001), whereas the group with 25(OH)D at or above 30 ng/mL did not have a different hazard for outcomes from the reference group. Hospitalization outcomes were predicted by 25(OH) levels(HR = 0.98; 95%CI: 0.96-1.00; P = 0.027) in the unadjusted Cox proportional hazards model, but not after multivariate adjusting. ROC curves identified 25(OH)D levels at highest risk for death, kidney progression, and hospitalization, at 17.4 ng/mL [area under the curve(AUC) = 0.60; 95%CI: 0.685-0.69; P = 0.027], 18.6 ng/mL(AUC = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.60-0.71; P < 0.001), and 19.0 ng/m L(AUC = 0.56; 95%CI: 0.50-0.62; P = 0.048), ***25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL was an independent predictor of death and progression in patients with stage 3-5 CKD, with no addit
