Facial Cellulitis of Dental Origin: Experiments from the University of BouakéHealth Centre (Cote d’Ivoire)

Context: Facial cellulitis of dental origin is relatively frequent and severe. Objective: The aim of this document to describe the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of facial cellulitis of dental origin in Bouaké. Methodology: This was a retrospective and descriptive study carried out in the stomatology and maxillofacial surgery department of the University of Bouaké Health centre over a period of 19 months (January 2018 to October 2019). All patients with facial cellulitis of dental origin were included. The parameters studied were epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary. Results: 179 patients were collected (hospital prevalence of 20.79%). The average age was 34 years (min 1-year-old and max 80-year-old). The sex ratio was 1.18. Among the patients, some were craftsmen (31.28%) and others were farmers (21.79%). The favourable factors included the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (77.65%) and traditional therapeutics (44.13%). The average number of days before consultation was 13 days (min 1 day and max 75 days). There were 7 cases of chronic cellulitis (3.91%) and 172 cases of acute cellulitis, including 107 (62.21%) circumscribed cellulitis, 51 (29.65%) diffused cellulitis, and 14 (8.14%) necrotizing fasciitis. The causal lesion was tooth decay (96.09%) and dental avulsion without antibiotherapy (3.91%). Incision and drainage was made in 145 patients (81%) necrosectomy surgery in 54 patients (30.17%). The mortality rate was 13.96%. Conclusion: Facial cellulitis of dental origin are clinically polymorphic with significant mortality prompting increased dental decay prevention actions.

Two new hydralazine hydrochloride-derived Schiff basesn>:n> (E)-1-(Phthalazin- 1-yl)-1-[(Pyridin-2-yl)Ethylidene]Hydralazine (PPEH), and 1-[2-(1-(pyridine- 3-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl]phthalazine (PEHP), were synthesized and partially characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic methods including IR and X-ray. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis of PEHP indicatesn> that the hydralazine moiety of both ligands possessesn> the exocyclic C=N bond. Both, PPEH and PEHP were tested as antimicrobials and antiparasites. Just PEHP could be considered as slightly antiplasmodial and antibacterial agent. In effect, PPEH showed low antimicrobial activity against one bacterial strain with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 250 μg/ml while PEHP showed very interesting activity against 18 out of 19 bacterial strains with MIC of 31.25 -n> 250 μg/ml compared to the standard drug, amoxicillin. PPEH and PEHP showed higher reducing activity on ferric ions compared to Vitamin C. 在过去50年左右的时间里,肯尼亚进行的水土保持计划仅仅产生了一些零星的和非持续性的效果。1988年,农业部开始采用小流域治理方式。起初这仅仅被认为是一种能够集中利用技术成果的方法,结果成为多学科参与和社区总动员的措施。要实现持久的水土资源保持,只有实施彻底的保护措施和当地所有参加者的全身心地投入。小流域委员会能够优先考虑当地最迫切需要解决的问题,并提供一条当地社区与外界联系的渠道。在六个地区进行的自我评价显示,在那些实行"共同参与" 的地区,效果最为显著。在这些地区农作物产量增加,种植趋于多样性,树木与地面覆盖增多,地下水资源得到补给,土地价格和劳动效率提高,他们还能主动地把成功范例推广到邻近地区。

背景:血红素氧化酶1是降解血红素生成胆红素、亚铁及一氧化碳过程的限速酶,具有重要的抗炎功能,其启动子部位GT重复序列的多态性可使该基因表达的水平不同,重复序列较短者基因转录活性较高。目的:观察冠状动脉旁路移植术后炎性标记物白细胞介素6,C-反应蛋白及纤维蛋白原的水平及其相关性,探讨血红素氧化酶1基因变量对它们的影响。设计、时间及地点:观察性试验,于2003年在英国伦敦大学学院心血管遗传病学中心完成。对象:220例符合入选条件的行冠状动脉旁路移植术的患者,男179例,女41例,年龄(63.34±9.64)岁。方法:PCR方法和DnA测序仪分析其血红素氧化酶1基因启动子部位GT重复序列的长短;于手术前及术后6,24,48,72,96,120h分别测白细胞介素6、C-反应蛋白和纤维蛋白原水平。主要观察指标:血红素氧化酶1基因启动子部位GT重复序列的长短;手术前及术后不同时间白细胞介素6、C-反应蛋白和纤维蛋白原水平。结果:术前白细胞介素6水平与C-反应蛋白及纤维蛋白原值显著相关(r=0.48,P<0.0001;r=0.41,P<0.0001),术后3者均显著升高,白细胞介素6峰质量浓度与C-反应蛋白峰质量浓度显著相关(r=0.34,P=0.0009),但与纤维蛋白原峰值无明显相关性(r=0.15,P=0.13)。术前C-反应蛋白值在血红素氧化酶1各基因组间存在明显差异,长GT重复序列者比短GT重复序列携带者高[(3.76±0.79),(2.07±0.17)mg/L,P=0.013];术后则各基因型组间水平相似。结论:炎症标志物的水平间存在相关性,血红素氧化酶1基因多态只与术前的基础C-反应蛋白和纤维蛋白原值有关,提示其可能只影响疾病的慢性炎症状态,从而影响炎性疾病的发生,而非急性炎症反应。

The Determinants of Fatal Outcomes during Severe Malaria in Children at the HKM University Teaching Hospital of Cotonou-Benin

Introduction: Malaria particularly affects children in sub-Saharan African countries. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with death in cases of severe childhood malaria to better understand the determinants of death in these children. Patients and Methods: This cohort, descriptive and analytical study was conducted from April 1 to August 15, 2015, at the CnHU-HKM pediatric clinic in Cotonou. Recruitment was exhaustive for all patients under 15 years of age who were admitted for severe malaria, as confirmed by thick smear microscopy. Results: Among the 1774 admitted patients, 449 had severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (i.e., a hospital frequency of 25.31%). The age group most affected consisted of children younger than 60 months of age (73%);female predominance was noted. The lethality rate of malaria was 13.1% (n = 59). The factors associated with death were coma (p = 0.032), poor convulsive status epilepticus (p = 0.08) and bacterial co-infection by gram negative bacteria (p = 0.021) with respectively correlations coefficient of 0.003, 3.940 and 2.424. Conclusion: Reduction of the malaria mortality rates in Benin hospitals will depend on appropriate management of poor prognostic factors, such as coma, bacterial co-infection and convulsive illness.

Placentas and newborns of Patients Suffering from High Blood Pressure in University Hospital of Brazzaville

Objective: To analyze placentas and newborns of patients with high blood pressure (HBP). Materials and Methods: Case-control study conducted from 1 January to 31 October 2017 in University Hospital of Brazzaville (birth room, anatomy and pathology laboratory) and Faculty of Health Sciences of Brazzaville (laboratory of anatomy and organogenesis). It concerned 40 placentas freshly delivered and newborns of patients with HBP compared to 40 placentas and newborns of patients without HBP. The variables analyzed were related to mothers, placentas and the newborns. Results: The patients were similar in age (26.9 ± 1.2 years VS 26.5 ± 1.1 years, p = 0.17) and parity (1.26 ± 0.7 VS 1.61 ± 0.3, p = 0.26). The type of hypertension in the cases was dominated by pre-eclampsia (68%). A significant reduction in placental measurements was more observed in case of HBP: weight (431 ± 37 g VS 503 ± 26 g, p nd area (239.82 ± 15.7 cm2 VS 292.1 ± 22.2 cm2, p ns were calcifications (75% VS 43.8%, p nd the retro placental hematoma cup (18.8%) among the cases. Microscopic lesions were more observed in hypertensives: infarction (68.8% VS 18.8%, p = 0.004) and endarteritis (93.8% VS 12.5%, p newborns were significantly different between the two populations: prematurity (34.3% VS 9.3%, p n weight (2577 ± 102 g VS 3060 ± 109 g, p nclusion: High blood pressure affects the placenta and the newborn. The placenta deserves to be systematically examined.

Use of Landsat 8 OLI Images to Assess Groundwater Potential Areas in the Bamun Plateau: Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL)

The problem of groundwater supply in the Bamun plateau situated in the Cameroon Volcanic Line exists and no proper solution has been found so far. This investigation intends to find the suitable groundwater potential zones by overlaying the geomorphologic map, lineament map, lineament density map and lithological map, using visual interpretation of Landsat imagery. The results reveal that about 1921 structural elements, ranging in size, from 30 m to 5.845 km with an average length of 671 m in the field. The total length of the mapped lineaments is approximately 1289 km. The most important lineament (5.845 km length) diagonally crosses the study area in the direction nnE-SSW. In addition to this trend, all others are smaller than 14 km. More than 92% of lineaments are less than 5 km in size and only 1.3% of them are larger than 10 km. Small lineaments are thus the most numerous. According to their directions, the lineaments listed are grouped into 18 directional classes of 10-degree intervals. The rosette of their directions highlights the preferred directions nE-SW, n-S, E-W, nnE-SSW and EnE-WSW. Most of the lineaments clusters in the central part of the area are n20° - 30°E and n60° - 70°E trending lineaments. In this study, the nE-SW trend dominates the structural trend followed by nW-SE and n-S. This can be an indication of the directions of groundwater movement in the area. Alluvial plain and valley have moderate to very good groundwater potential that occurs all over the study area. Porosity of the volcanic rocks varies greatly, but it is everywhere more porous than the underlying, unweathered bedrock. There are essentially three classes (low, average and high) of groundwater potential zones.
