Twenty-four-hour PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected simultaneously at a highly trafficked road-side site in Hong Kong every sixth day from October 2004 to September 2005. The mass concentrations of PM2.5, PMlo-2.5 （defined as PM10 - PM2.5）, organic carbon （OC）, elemental carbon （eC）, water-soluble ions, and up to 25 elements were determined. Investigation of the chemical compositions and potential sources revealed distinct differences between PM2.5 and PM10-2.5. The annual average mass concentrations were 55.5 ＋ 25.5 and 25.9±15.7μg/m^3 for PM2.5 and PM10-2.5, respectively. eC, OM （OM = OC × 1.4）, and ammonium sulfate comprised over -82% of PM2.5, accounting for -29%, -27%, and -25%, respectively, of the PM2.5 mass. Low OC/eC ratios （less than 1） for PM2.5 suggested that fresh diesel-engine exhaust was a major contributor. Seven sources were resolved for PM2.5 by positive matrix factorization （PMF） model, including vehicle emissions （-29%）, secondary inorganic aerosols （-27%）, waste incinera- tor/biomass burning （-23%）, residual oil combustion （-10%）, marine aerosols （-6%）, industrial exhaust （-4%）, and resuspended road dust （-1%）. eC and OM comprised only -19% of PM10-2.5. The average OC/eC ratio of PM10-2.5 was 7.8± 14.2, suggesting that sources other than vehicular exhaust were important contributors. The sources for PM10-2.5 determined by the PMF model included -20% traffic-generated resuspension （e.g., tire dust/brake linear/petrol evaporation）, -17% locally resuspended road dust, -17% marine aerosols, -12% secondary aerosols/field burning, and -11% vehicle emissions.

Cyclooxygenase Inhibition in Cancer Immunotherapy: Combination of Indomethacin with Cancer Vaccines Is Not Always Beneficial

Cyclooxygenase (COX)-1, but preferable COX-2 catalyzes the synthesis of PGe2 in several tumors, promoting angiogenesis and a suppressive inflammation in their microenvironments. Different types of cancer vaccines have been combined with COX-2 inhibitors, assuming that its particular mechanism of action will not influence the overall results of the combination. In this research, a possible relationship between the type of cancer vaccine and the outcome of the combination with a COX inhibitor was experimentally addressed. We investigated whether nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) affect the immune response to vaccination. Three adjuvants were evaluated for humoral and cellular response using ovalbumin (OVA) as antigen. We evaluated also the impact of indomethacin in five tumor models and the correlation of this effect with the secretion of prostaglandin e2 (PGe2) of these cells. We finally studied the combination of indomethacin with two cancer vaccines in three different experimental settings. COX inhibitor did not interfere with dendritic cells maturation in vitro and did not affect the frequency of splenic immune cell populations in mice. However, the induction of OVA-specific antibodies is affected by the COX inhibitor but its impact on cytotoxic CD8+ T cell response is adjuvant-dependent. In contrast, the antitumor effect of the COX inhibitor in the 3LL-D122 tumor model is not mediated by CD4+ or CD8+ T cells. Interestingly, the in vivo effect observed in this model and others didn’t correlate with levels of PGe2 secretion by the tumor cell lines in vitro. Finally, the combination of a COX inhibitor with cancer vaccines may depend on the type of the cancer vaccine.

Zinc complexes of Schiff base ligands exhibit interesting properties which could be exploited for potential applications as catalysts and models for biochemical systems. In this study, we report of the synthesis of a new zinc Schiff base complex, bis(N’-(pyridine-3-carboxaldehyde) isonicotinoylhydrazone) zinc(II), which has been characterized by physico-chemical methods. The X-ray single crystal structure of the complex has also been determined. The Schiff base ligand is bonded to the metal in a monodentate manner, coordinating through the pyridine N-atom, as shown from spectral studies. The crystal structure shows the zinc atom bonded to two Schiff bases and four aqua ligands, with each Schiff base ligand coordinating through its pyridine N-atom forming a distorted octahedral ZnN2O4 complex. Two water molecules and two nitrate ions found in the crystal structure link the different monomers through hydrogen bonding to form a layered supramolecular structure.

Design of an Interactive Geo-Location Mobile Application for Civil Societies in east Africa

This paper reports the developed mobile application through the use of advanced technologies such as mobile computing, cloud computing and Global Positioning System (GPS) in order to solve the challenges. The purpose of this study is to find out how the recent advances and mass adoption of ICT by the public can best be leveraged to enhance the performance of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in east Africa. The data collection techniques used are through questionnaires, observations and conducting interviews with different stakeholders in the civil society arena i.e., the donors, the CSOs and the people in society that are given a voice by civil societies. In the system development phase, agile development methodology was used. Analysis of the data collected showed that there is a gap in the availability of a single or a centralized platform which can be easily accessed, user-friendly and reliable where different actors can readily get reliable and up-to-date information about the available CSOs they are interested in. To address this problem, an interactive online directory of CSOs has been developed. The platform is mobile based and enables CSOs to register and fill up their current details, thus ensuring that there is always correct and updated information. The platform is equipped with, among other features, a geo-mapping facility which enables users of the system to correctly geo-locate their civil societies of interest on a map view. The results of system evaluation showed that 88.125% of users were satisfied with the system basing on the evaluation criteria.

The evolution of technology in 1990s resulted in the enormous growth of smartphones and the propagation of mobile applications (App) that marked new opportunities for healthcare centers and medical education. Apps have altered health services from patient’s health monitoring to specialist’s appointments and consultations from specialized health facilities. It can be argued that a healthy society can bring forth sustainable economic development to its full potential while an unhealthy society cannot. However, a free movement of people, labour and right to residence which was built across east Africa (eA) borders enabled Tanzania and Kenya borders to have enormous interactions. Subsequently, increase the risk of highly communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis and Sexually transmitted infections in such a way that medical attention is unavoidable along the borders. Statistically, Android Operating System (OS) owns 83% of Africa’s mobile OS market. In addition, 25,794,560 internet users reported by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) together with the 22.86 million internet users provided by Kenya Digital which is equivalent to 46% and 43% of internet penetration in year 2020, disclose the need for Android mobile application for mapping health facilities both online and offline using Google map API, which will solve residents’ need to healthcare services on the presence or shortage of internet connections;using either Swahili or english language via Smartphone devices. The App incorporates Monitoring and evaluation (M & e) tool for tracking application usage which will ease Admin’s task to generate daily and monthly reports in excel and Comma-Separated Values (CSV) formats. The developed system received positive feedback from eA citizens and residents in the Arusha region and Namanga border crossing where 90.2% of the system evaluation conducted between Dec 2020 and Apr 2021 agreed upon App usage.

Background:Survival from pancreatic cancer is low *** the US,the 5-year relative survival has been slightly higher for women,whites and younger patients than for their counterparts,and differences in age and stage at diagnosis[Corrections added Nov 16,2022,after first online publication:a new affiliation is added to Maja Nikšić]may contribute to this *** aimed to examine trends in survival by race,stage,age and sex for adults(15-99 years)diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the ***:This population-based study included 399,427 adults registered with pancreatic cancer in 41 US state cancer registries during 2001-2014,with followup to December 31,*** estimated age-specific and age-standardized net survival at 1 and 5 ***:Overall,12.3%of patients were blacks,and 84.2%were *** 9.5%of patients were diagnosed with localized disease,but 50.5%were diagnosed at an advanced stage;slightly more among blacks,mainly among *** substantial changes were seen over time(2001-2003,2004-2008,2009-2014).In general,1-year net survival was higher in whites than in blacks(26.1%vs.22.1%during 2001-2003,35.1%vs.31.4%during 2009-2014).This difference was particularly evident among patients with localized disease(49.6%in whites vs.44.6%in blacks during 2001-2003,60.1%vs.55.3%during 2009-2014).The survival gap between blacks and whites with localized disease was persistent at 5 years after diagnosis,and it widened over time(from 24.0%vs.21.3%during 2001-2003 to 39.7%vs.31.0%during 2009-2014).The survival gap was wider among men than among ***:Gaps in 1-and 5-year survival between blacks and whites were persistent throughout 2001-2014,especially for patients diagnosed with a localized tumor,for which surgery is currently the only treatment modality with the potential for cure.
