Prevalence and outcomes of pancreatic cystic neoplasms in liver transplant recipients

AIM To determine the prevalence,characteristics and clinical course of pancreatic cystic neoplasms(PCNs) in liver transplantation(LT) *** We retrospectively studied consecutive patients who underwent LT between January 1998 to April 2016. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained from patient medical records. Imaging findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography were reviewed by two *** During the study period,872 patients underwent cadaveric LT. Pancreatic cysts were identified in 53/872(6.1%) and 31/53(58.5%) were PCNs [28 intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN),2 mucinous cystic neoplasm(MCN),1 serous cystadenoma]. Patients with PCNs exhibited less male predominance(55% vs 73%,P = 0.03) compared to patients without pancreatic cysts. Thirteen patients(42%) were diagnosed with PCN pre-LT while 18 patients(58%) developed PCN post-LT. The median size of PCNs was 13 mm [interquartile range(IQR) 10-20 mm]. All IPMNs were side-branch type. Most PCNs were found in the head and body of pancreas(37% each),followed by the tail(25%). Five patients underwent further evaluation with endoscopic ultrasound. Progress imaging was performed on 81% of patients. PCNs remained stable in size and number in all but 2 patients. During a median follow up of 39 mo(IQR 26-58 mo),the 2(6%) patients with MCN underwent pancreatectomy. No PCN patient developed pancreatic adenocarcinoma,while 5 died from illnesses unrelated to the PCN. Among patients without PCN,1/841(0.1%) developed pancreatic *** The prevalence of PCNs in LT recipients was similar to the general population(3.6%,31/872). Side-branch IPMNs do not appear to have accelerated malignant potential in post-LT patients,indicating the current surveillance guidelines are applicable to this group.

Natural regeneration responses to thinning and burning treatments in ponderosa pine forests and implications for restoration

Understanding naturally occurring pine regeneration dynamics in response to thinning and burning treatments is necessary not only to measure the longevity of the restoration or fuels treatment,but also to assess how well regeneration meets forest sustainability guidelines and whether natural regeneration is sufficient for maintaining a sustainable forest structure and composition.A synthesis review was carried out on the effects of mechanical thinning and prescribed burn treatments on natural pine regeneration response in frequent-fire ponderosa pine forests across the western United *** focus was on site-specific variability in pine regeneration dynamics,temporal trends in regeneration presence and abundance,and response to treatment as described in the current literature using 29 studies that met our evidence-based review *** showed that the effects of thinning and burning treatments on regeneration depended on time since *** thinning,prescribed burning,and thinning plus burn treatments all increased seedling density,but there was high variability among sites and *** were mixed results in the short-term(ears)with both increasing and decreasing regeneration,and a general increase in regeneration 11−20 years *** long-term studies(>20 years)concluded that stands can return to pre-treatment densities in terms of total trees per hectare and forest floor duff levels when there are no maintenance treatments *** studies showed the average ponderosa pine seedling presence,survival and growth found in today’s forests to be at a high density;this combined with missed fire cycles could contribute to future fire risk and reduce the efficacy of maintaining fuel reduction goals.

The larval stages of the cestode parasites belonging to the genus echinococcus grow within internal organs of humans and a range of animal *** resulting diseases,collectively termed echinococcoses,include major neglected tropical diseases of humans and *** larvae are outwardly protected by the laminated layer(LL),an acellular structure that is unique to this *** LL is based on a fibrillar meshwork made up of mucins,which are decorated by galactose-rich *** addition,in the species cluster termed *** sensu lato,the LL features nano-deposits of the calcium salt of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate(Insp_(6)).The main purpose of our article is to update the immunobiology of the *** recent advances in this area are(i)the demonstration of LL“debris”at the infection site and draining lymph nodes,(ii)the characterization of the decoy activity of calcium Inp6 with respect to complement,(iii)the evidence that the LL mucin carbohydrates interact specifically with a lectin receptor expressed in Kupffer cells(Clec4F),and(iv)the characterization of what appear to be receptor-independent effects of LL particles on dendritic cells and *** information is missing on the immunology of this intriguing structure:we discuss gaps in knowledge and propose possible avenues for research.

Although the health benefits of swimming are well-documented, health effects such as asthma and bladder cancer are linked to disinfection by-products(DBPs) in pool water. DBPs are formed from the reaction of disinfectants such as chlorine(Cl) or bromine(Br) with organics in the water. Our previous study(Daiber et al., environ. Sci. Technol. 50, 6652;2016) found correlations between the concentrations of classes of DBPs and the mutagenic potencies of waters from chlorinated or brominated swimming pools and spas. We extended this study by identifying significantly different concentrations of 21 individual DBPs in brominated or chlorinated pool and spa waters as well as identifying which DBPs and additional DBP classes were most associated with the mutagenicity of these waters. Using data from our previous study, we found that among 21 DBPs analyzed in 21 pool and spa waters, the concentration of bromoacetic acid was significantly higher in Brwaters versus Cl-waters, whereas the concentration of trichloroacetic acid was significantly higher in Cl-waters. Five Br-DBPs(tribromomethane, dibromochloroacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, bromoacetic acid, and tribromoacetic acid) had significantly higher concentrations in Br-spa versus Cl-spa waters. Cl-pools had significantly higher concentrations of ClDBPs(trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, and chloroacetic acid), whereas Br-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Br-DBPs(tribromomethane, dibromoacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, and tribromoacetic acid). The concentrations of the sum of all 4 trihalomethanes, all 11 Br-DBPs, and all 5 nitrogen-containing DBPs were each significantly higher in brominated than in chlorinated pools and spas. The 8 Br-DBPs were the only DBPs whose individual concentrations were significantly correlated with the mutagenic potencies of the pool and spa waters. Clustering is one of the recently challenging tasks since there is an *** amount of data in scientific research and commercial applications. High quality and fast document clustering algorithms are in great demand to deal with large volume of data. The computational requirements for bringing such growing amount data to a central site for clustering are complex. The proposed algorithm uses optimal centroids for *** clustering based on Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO).PSO is used to take advantage of its global search ability to provide optimal centroids which aids in generating more compact clusters with improved accuracy. This proposed methodology utilizes Hadoop and Map Reduce framework which provides distributed storage and analysis to support data intensive distributed applications. experiments were performed on Reuter's and RCV1 document dataset which shows an improvement in accuracy with reduced execution time.

This article reviews biological invasions in which predation (or its absence) plays a major role in the success of the invader. examples are described in which the invader out-competes native species for the same food, and cases in which the invader consumes valued native species. In many instances, better predator avoidance by the invasive species or the absence of predators in the new habitat contributes to the success of the invaders; in other cases native or introduced predators appear to be able to keep the invasive species in check. A relatively new management approach in the US is the idea of adding another trophic level – to have humans act as the predators and consume the invasive species. This approach is being utilized in Florida and throughout the Caribbean against the lionfish, but could be extended to other fishes, as well as to various invasive crustaceans and mollusks. This idea is controversial, and current regulations prohibiting the possession of individuals of the invasive species (e.g., mitten crabs or snakefish) would preclude the development of a fishery for them.

Background: Decomposition process controls the release and the availability of essential nutrients, which affects the structure and the functioning of plant communities. Freshwater reservoirs are largely known to have impacts on the water quality, especially during the first phases of filling. The aim of the study was to conduct a nutrient release experiment where decomposition of fresh leaves and litter from vegetation of a low dry tropical forest was flooded. Selected species were Leguminosae species Albizia glabripetala (H. S. Irwin) G. P. Lewis & P. e. Owen (AG), Bauhinia aculeata L. (BA), Centrolobium paraense Tul. (CP) and Piptadenia leucoxyllon Barneby & J. W. Grimes (PL). Freshwater decomposition experiments were carried out at 50 cm depth inside nine floating containers in a protected area of the reservoir: litter (HJ), leaves of AG and BA (e2), and CP and PL (e3) were used. It was over 20 weeks period. every week for two months and at week 20, a bag of each sample was extracted for analysis of Carbon, Ca, Mg, Na, K, P and S. Results: Results indicate that residual dry mass decreased by 71% for HJ, 81.4% for e2, and more than 86.8% for e3 after twenty weeks. The higher content of carbon (%) at the beginning of the experiment was e2 > e3 > HJ. After 20 weeks, the percentage of carbon loss was 2.09% for HJ, 3.02% for e2, and 1.69% for e3. S decreased between 50% - 60% during the first week;at 20 weeks, the remaining amount of S was 13% for HJ and e3 and 7% for e2. P showed a different pattern, where the second week was more important for the release. HJ and e3 followed the pattern of nutrient release: K > Mg > Na > Ca while e2 was K > Ca > Mg > Na. Conclusions: P and S release depends on the time of submergence and the species. Fresh leaves decay faster than necromass. Nutrient loss is higher than 50% for the three first weeks and seems constant between week 8 - 20. C and S concentrations incorporated in the reservoir can result in a high release of gases CH<
