Cell death and survival following manual and femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy in age-related cataract

AIM： To study molecular and morphological changes in lens epithelial cells following femtosecond laser-assisted and manually performed continuous curvilinear capsulotomy（CCC） in order to get information about these methods regarding their potential role in the induction of development of secondary cataract. MeTHODS： Anterior lens capsules（ALC） were removed from 40 patients with age-related cataract by manual CCC and by femtosecond laser-assisted capsulotomy（FLAC）. Samples removed by manual CCC were assorted in group 1, FLAC samples were classified in group 2. Morphology of lens epithelial cells was examined with light and electron microscopes. Following capsulotomy, expressions of p53, Bcl-2 and cyclin D1 genes were analyzed with reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the pro-apoptotic p53 in the epithelial cells. ReSULTS： Light and electron microscopic examination showed that ALC of group 1 contained more degenerating cells following manual CCC than after FLAC. The expression level of p53 was higher after manual than laser-assisted surgery. Immunocytochemistry indicated significantly higher number of cells containing p53 protein in the manual CCC group than following FLAC. Bcl-2 and cyclin D1 gene expression levels were slightly lower following manual CCC than after FLAC, but the difference was not significant. CONCLUSION： Manually removed ALC shows slightly, but not significantly larger damage due to the mechanical stretching and pulling of the capsule than those removed using FLAC.

Reducing environmental pollution is a critical goal in global environmental economics and economic *** european Union(eU)faces environmental challenges due to its development *** we present a comprehensive approach to assess the impact of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions,energy consumption(eC),population structure(POP),economy(GDP),and policies on the environment within the eU using the environmental Kuznets curve(eKC).Our research reveals that between 1990 and 2019,the eU-27 experienced an increase of t1.18 million tonnes of oil equivalent(Mtoe)per year in energy consumption(pe CO_(2)emissions decreased by 24.25 million tonnes(Mt)per year(pe highest reduction in CO_(2)emissions occurred in Germany(7.52 Mt CO_(2)annually),and the lowest in Latvia(0.087 Mt CO_(2)annually).The empirical eKC analysis shows an inverted-U shaped relationship between GDP and CO_(2)emissions in the ***,a 1%increase in GDP results in a 0.705%increase in carbon emission,while a 1%increase in GDP2 leads to a 0.062%reduction in environmental pollution in the long run(pese findings indicate that economic development within the eU has reached a stage where economic growth positively impacts the ***,this study provides insights into the effectiveness of environmental policies in mitigating degradation and promoting green growth in the eU 27 countries.

In an industrial facility,many electrical consumers can affect the quality of ***,the freedom from interference sources of these devices and equipment can be crucial for quality and uninterrupted electricity *** welding equipment is also a possible source of *** electrical harmonic injections created by welding equipment into the electrical network can affect the operation of other consumers connected to the given distribution points and cause unjustified overheating and shutdowns of some network *** aim of the research is to analyse the current harmonic injection of welding equipment of different types and modes of operation connected to the internal distribution network of the industrial *** effectiveness of the active harmonic filter built into the welding equipment was also examined in the *** results showed that the built-in active harmonic filter of the DC045 laser welding equipment was ineffective because the total harmonic distortion(THD)was about three times the 8%allowed by Ieee 519−2022 *** current harmonic injection of MIG 320 and MM403 type welding equipment was more than five times the permissible value of 5%.The current harmonic distortion of the PLAS140 type plasma-jet cutter equipment was below the 5% value allowed in the standard,thus it complied with *** on the measurement results,it can be concluded that the use of protection against harmonics is also necessary for welding ***,proposals were made in the paper to reduce the effect of harmonics.

This work investigates the effect of reaction conditions on the copolymerization of isobutylene (IB) with alloocimene (Allo) in methyl chloride (MeCl) using AlCh and ethylaluminum dichloride (etAlCh) as coinitiators and adventitious moisture as the initiator. Both AlCh and etAlCb produced high molecular weight (Mn > 1.0 x 10^5 g/mol) thermoplastic elastomers (TPes) with good mechanical properties in short reaction time (ese unique TPes have unsaturations in the end blocks, leading to easy functionalization and/or crosslinking.

Regulation of neuronal survival by DNA methyltransferases

The limited regenerative capacity of neuronal cells requires tight orchestration of cell death and survival regulation in the context of longevity, age-associated diseases as well as during the development of the nervous system. Subordinate to genetic networks epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation and histone modifications are involved in the regulation of neuronal development, function and aging. DNA methylation by DNA methyltransferases （DNMTs）, mostly correlated with gene silencing, is a dynamic and reversible process. In addition to their canonical actions performing cytosine methylation, DNMTs influence gene expression by interactions with histone modifying enzymes or complexes increasing the complexity of epigenetic transcriptional networks. DNMTs are expressed in neuronal progenitors, post-mi- totic as well as adult neurons. In this review, we discuss the role and mode of actions of DNMTs including downstream networks in the regulation of neuronal survival in the developing and aging nervous system and its relevance for associated disorders.

Proteomics and the genetics of sperm chromatin condensation

Spermatogenesis involves extremely marked cellular, genetic and chromatin changes resulting in the generation of the highly specialized sperm cell. Proteomics allows the identification of the proteins that compose the spermatogenic cells and the study of their function. The recent developments in mass spectrometry （MS） have markedly increased the throughput to identify and to study the sperm proteins. Catalogs of thousands of testis and spermatozoan proteins in human and different model species are becoming available, setting up the basis for subsequent research, diagnostic applications and possibly the future development of specific treatments. The present review intends to summarize the key genetic and chromatin changes at the different stages of spermatogenesis and in the mature sperm cell and to comment on the presently available proteomic studies.

In the cerebral cortex,local inhibition is achieved by different types of gamma-aminobutyric(GABA)-expressing interneurons,representing essential key players of cortical information processing(Marin,2012).Their development has to be highly orchestrated to ensure proper numbers and subtype composition in the adult cortex and defects in interneuron development contribute to the pathophysiology of psychiatric diseases(Marin,2012).

Deactivation of Streptococcus mutans Biofilms on a Tooth Surface Using He Dielectric Barrier Discharge at Atmospheric Pressure

This paper presents a study of the effect of the low temperature atmospheric helium dielectric barrier discharge（DBD） on the Streptococcus mutans biofilms formed on tooth surface. Pig jaws were also treated by plasma to detect if there is any harmful effect on the *** plasma was characterized by using optical emission *** data indicated that the discharge is very effective in deactivating Streptococcus mutans *** can destroy them with an average decimal reduction time（D-time） of 19 s and about 98%of thein were killed after a treatment time of 30 *** to the survival curve kinetic an overall 32 s treatment time would be necessary to perform a complete *** experimental results presented in this study indicated that the helium dielectric barrier discharge,in plan-parallel electrode configuration,could be a very effective tool for deactivation of oral bacteria and might be a promising technique in various dental clinical applications.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and suicide:A systematic review

AIM To investigate suicidality and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), this paper aims to systematically review the literature as an extension of previous *** We searched five databases(Ovid MeDLINe, Psychinfo, PubM ed, Scopus, Web of Science) with two categories of search terms:(1) suicide; suicidal; suicide behavior; suicide attempt; suicidal thought; and(2) ADHD. ReSULTS The search resulted 26 articles. There is a positive association between ADHD and suicidality in both sexes and in all age groups. Comorbid disorders mediate between suicidality and ADHD. CONCLUSION Recognizing ADHD, comorbid conditions and suicidality is important in prevention.

Drying of suspensions and solutions on inert particle surface in mechanically spouted bed dryer

To eliminate some disadvantages of the conventional spouted bed dryers the mechanically spouted bed （MSB） system was developed. This dryer type is convenient to use inert particles providing an increased surface area for drying of materials of high-moisture content and heat sensitive materials. On three different drying tasks are demonstrated the experimental optimization of process parameters to obtain products of demanded quality. The main object was at drying of AIO（OH） suspension to preserve the particle size under 2.5μm and to obtain product with a moisture content of about 0.05 kg/kg （d.b.）. For this reason a very thin particle coating and intensive abrasion had to be assured. At drying of tomato concentrates the thermoplasticity makes the process very difficult. To jump over the deliquescent and sticky state developed at the critical temperature-moisture content values a very short drying time （8-10 s） must be provided. The third task was to form powder-like product from bovine serum albumin （BSA） solution having very low solid content （2-4%）. The selected process parameters given in this paper resulted in a mean particle size of less than 20 μm while the soluble oreserved orotein content was higher than 90%.
