Mi.canthus i. an emergi.g dedi.ated energy crop, whi.h can provi.e excellent yi.ld on margi.al lands. However, thi. crop i. more di.fi.ult to harvest than many conventi.nal energy crops such as corn stover and swi.chgrass due to i.s tall and ri.i. stalks. Crop samples for laboratory studi.s were collected from the fi.ld and the effects of roll spaci.g, roll speed, and crop i.put of a mechani.al condi.i.ni.g devi.e on the physi.al condi.i.ns of mi.canthus were studi.d i. a lab setti.g. Test results showed that mechani.al condi.i.ni.g i. effecti.e to change the physi.al condi.i.ns of mi.canthus to make bali.g possi.le or easi.r. Results also showed that the roll spaci.g had the most si.ni.i.ant i.pact on the physi.al condi.i.ns of mi.canthus, shown by a 115% i.crease i. condi.i.ni.g over a 0.95 cm (75%) reducti.n i. roll spaci.g. i.creased roll spaci.g and speed were shown to decrease the amount of torque requi.ed to condi.i.n the mi.canthus.

The two mast cameras, Mastcams, onboard Mars rover Curi.si.y are multi.pectral i.agers wi.h ni.e bands i. each. Currently, the i.ages are compressed losslessly usi.g JPEG, whi.h can achi.ve only two to three ti.es of compressi.n. We present a comparati.e study of four approaches to compressi.g multi.pectral Mastcam i.ages. The fi.st approach i. to di.i.e the ni.e bands i.to three groups wi.h each group havi.g three bands. Si.ce the multi.pectral bands have strong correlati.n, we treat the three groups of i.ages as vi.eo frames. We call thi. approach the Vi.eo approach. The second approach i. to compress each group separately and we call i. the spli. band (SB) approach. The thi.d one i. to apply a two-step approach i. whi.h the fi.st step uses pri.ci.al component analysi. (PCA) to compress a ni.e-band i.age cube to si. bands and a second step compresses the si. PCA bands usi.g conventi.nal codecs. The fourth one i. to apply PCA only. i. addi.i.n, we also present subjecti.e and objecti.e assessment results for compressi.g RGB i.ages because RGB i.ages have been used for stereo and di.pari.y map generati.n. Fi.e well-known compressi.n codecs, i.cludi.g JPEG, JPEG-2000 (J2K), X264, X265, and Daala i. the li.erature, have been appli.d and compared i. each approach. The performance of di.ferent algori.hms was assessed usi.g four well-known performance metri.s. Two are conventi.nal and another two are known to have good correlati.n wi.h human percepti.n. Extensi.e experi.ents usi.g actual Mastcam i.ages have been performed to demonstrate the vari.us approaches. We observed that perceptually lossless compressi.n can be achi.ved at 10:1 compressi.n rati.. i. parti.ular, the performance gai. of the SB approach wi.h Daala i. at least 5 dBs i. terms peak si.nal-to-noi.e rati. (PSNR) at 10:1 compressi.n rati. over that of JPEG. Subjecti.e compari.ons also corroborated wi.h the objecti.e metri.s i. that perceptually lossless compressi.n can be achi.ved even at 20 to 1 compressi.n

Hyperspectral i.ages (HSi. have hundreds of bands, whi.h i.pose heavy burden on data storage and transmi.si.n bandwi.th. Qui.e a few compressi.n techni.ues have been explored for HSi.i. the past decades. One hi.h performi.g techni.ue i. the combi.ati.n of pri.ci.al component analysi. (PCA) and JPEG-2000 (J2K). However, si.ce there are several new compressi.n codecs developed after J2K i. the past 15 years, i. i. worthwhi.e to revi.i. thi. research area and i.vesti.ate i. there are better techni.ues for HSi.compressi.n. i. thi. paper, we present some new results i. HSi.compressi.n. We ai. at perceptually lossless compressi.n of HSi. Perceptually lossless means that the decompressed HSi.data cube has a performance metri. near 40 dBs i. terms of peak-si.nal-to-noi.e rati. (PSNR) or human vi.ual system (HVS) based metri.s. The key i.ea i. to compare several combi.ati.ns of PCA and vi.eo/ i.age codecs. Three representati.e HSi.data cubes were used i. our studi.s. Four vi.eo/i.age codecs, i.cludi.g J2K, X264, X265, and Daala, have been i.vesti.ated and four performance metri.s were used i. our comparati.e studi.s. Moreover, some alternati.e techni.ues such as vi.eo, spli. band, and PCA only approaches were also compared. i. was observed that the combi.ati.n of PCA and X264 yi.lded the best performance i. terms of compressi.n performance and computati.nal complexi.y. i. some cases, the PCA + X264 combi.ati.n achi.ved more than 3 dBs than the PCA + J2K combi.ati.n.

As a dedi.ated energy crop, swi.chgrass may be harvested i. fall or early spri.g dependi.g on weather condi.i.ns, fi.ld capaci.i.s of harvesti.g machi.es, storage capaci.i.s, fi.ld management and avai.abi.i.y of machi.e operators. To reduce storage space demand and i.crease transportati.n effi.i.ncy, harvested swi.chgrass should be densi.i.d. Thi. research was conducted to exami.e energy consumpti.n of compressi.g swi.chgrass collected from vari.us harvesti.g seasons. Results i.di.ated that the swi.chgrass harvested i. the spri.g requi.ed the maxi.um energy consumpti.n to process due to i.s dry and bri.tle nature. Conversely, the swi.chgrass harvested i. the fall requi.ed less energy to compress due to i.s hi.her moi.ture content and associ.ted reducti.n i. resi.ti.e forces. For the same moi.ture content, fall harvested swi.chgrass would consume less energy to compress compared to spri.g harvested due to changes i. properti.s of swi.chgrass over the wi.ter.

Large square bali.g i. currently recogni.ed as a hi.h effi.i.ncy bi.mass harvesti.g system. Bali.g, bale collecti.g, and stori.g at a commerci.l wheat straw farm was studi.d as a typi.al large square bale harvesti.g system. Factors that affect large square bale producti.n and handli.g logi.ti.s were quanti.i.d. Fi.ld operati.ns of a large square baler, two bale handlers, and three bale trucks were observed i. a full day fi.ld operati.n. System performance was analyzed and materi.l capaci.i.s of all machi.es used i. thi. system were determi.ed based on fi.ld measurements. System li.i.ati.ns were quanti.i.d, and means to i.crease system effi.i.ncy or reduce producti.n costs were di.cussed. Results showed that 340 wheat straw bales at a densi.y of 116 kg·m-3 (wet matter) were made wi.h a si.gle large square baler duri.g 8 h fi.ld operati.ns. The number of bales produced was the system li.i.ati.n when one baler, two bale handlers and three bale trucks were used. Addi.g a baler or reduce the number of operators can i.crease system effi.i.ncy. The large square baler used i. thi. study had a materi.l capaci.y of 13 Mg·h-1. Si.i.ar bali.g tri.ls were conducted i. a swi.chgrass fi.ld and results i.di.ated that the baler had the same materi.l capaci.y.
