Johnson-Laird and Byrne distinguished ten kinds of conditionals. Their framework was the mental models theory and they attributed different combinations of semantic possibilities to those ten types of conditionals. Based on such combinations, the mental models theory has clear predictions for reasoning tasks, including those kinds of conditionals and involving reasoning schemata such as Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, the affirming the consequent fallacy, and the denying the antecedent fallacy. My aim in this paper is to show that the prediction,; of the mental logic theory for those reasoning tasks are exactly the same as those of the mental models theory, and that, therefore, such tasks are not useful to decide which of the two theories is correct.

The aim of the present paper is to state an asymptotic property Ρ of Shannon’s sampling theorem type, based on normalized cardinal sines, and keeping constant the sampling frequency of a not necessarilly band- limited signal. It generalizes in the limit the results stated by Marvasti et al. [7] and Agud et al. [1]. We show that Ρ is fulfilled for any constant signal working for every given sampling frequency. Moreover, we conjecture that Gaussian maps of the form e-Λt2 ,Λ∈R+, hold Ρ. We support this conjecture by proving the equality given by for the three first coefficients of the power series representation of e-Λt2 .

Different experiments in high speed turbomachines require expensive and sophisticated infrastructure to implement their impulsion and reach high regimes. In developed countries, this can be achieved by using aeroderivative gas turbines or DC motors of about 400 HP. This paper presents an experimental system designed and built with the intention of performing behavior studies in test turbomachinery. The proposed installation uses compressed air as driving fluid, which allows the turbomachinery to reach high rotational speeds where very important phenomena occur. An analysis is carried out considering the rotational speed behavior of an internal combustion engine turbocharger of the Perkins series when it is driven by pressures ranging from 4.2 kg/cm2 to zero. Additionally, another experiment couples an automotive electrical generator with the turbine to observe the system operation when a load is applied. The behavior of the pressure is analyzed when it is in function of the time of air discharge that goes from a compressed air storage tank to the turbocharger for its impulsion. This is an experimental system that can be designed and constructed economically within the bounds of any public university.

The present work proposes a mean for recovery of metals used in current ion-lithium batteries, like lithium, cobalt and nickel, using organic agents and ultrasound instead of the more aggressive and less environment friendly method with sulfuric acid. This is especially useful in those countries that doesn’t have lithium deposits and have a growing demand of such batteries, reducing the economic loss this represents. During the process, variables such as temperature, leaching agent concentration and ultrasound frequency were modified, using concentrations of 0.5 M (molar), 1 M and 1.5 M of sodium citrate, temperatures of 25°C, 55°C and 60°C and also ultrasound frequencies of 20 KHz, 30 KHz and 40 KHz. It was found that the best combination of these variables that yielded the most quantity of the desired metal was 0.5 M concentration for both lithium and nickel, while using 60°C and no ultrasound with Li and 55°C and 40 KHz for Ni. For Co the best variables discovered were 1.5 molar concentration, 60°C and 40 KHz.

Floods affect more people globally than any other type of natural hazard. Great potential exists for new technologies to support flood disaster risk reduction. In addition to existing expert-based data collection and analysis, direct input from communities and citizens across the globe may also be used to monitor, validate, and reduce flood risk. New technologies have already been proven to effectively aid in humanitarian response and recovery. However, while ex-ante technologies are increasingly utilized to collect information on exposure, efforts directed towards assessing and monitoring hazards and vulnerability remain limited. Hazard model validation and social vulnerability assessment deserve particular attention. New technologies offer great potential for engaging people and facilitating the coproduction of knowledge.

The author of the Taylor Rule has provided new evidence about the application of the Sandpile model to his rule. The same findings of the Sandpile model are described in the Taylor paper in agreement with the conclusions of the Sandpile model. That is, that keeping interest rates too low for too long penalizes the economic recovery. On top of that the Sandpile also provides a metric for the severity of the crisis. The same law (Power Law) applies to the size and the duration of the crisis just modifying the order of the distribution paving thus a way for measuring the size of the crisis. According to the NBER data, the length is already determined for the US crisis, if the model holds on, we can also assess the severity.

In this paper we present the design and prototyping of an arithmetic processor based on reconfigurable technology, whose purpose is to determine in a parallel manner the quality of the solution in a radio network design optimization problem. This problem consists in the search for an optimal set of locations in which to place radio antennas in order to obtain the maximum possible coverage, for a given terrain and antenna characteristics. The original computational contribution of this work is to use programmable logic devices to avoid the high cost of computing the evolutionary algorithms required to tackle this optimization problem. This is achieved by means of reconfigurable processors working in parallel. On the basis of the results obtained from the prototype, it may be considered a parallel architecture capable of achieving a great acceleration in the calculations.

Assessment of Present and Future Radioactive Contamination at Global Scale

As a result of more than two thousand nuclear tests performed since 1945, two war actions and few accidents in nuclear reactor, it does already exist a radioactive contamination at global scale. This contamination has been accumulated mainly in marine sediments, because sea is about 80% of planet surface, and solid fission products released by nuclear explosions are transported by wind first and then by rain to liquid and solid portions on earth, while gaseous fission products are diffused in the atmosphere. In this way, heavy, high yielding fission products, such as 137Cs, get marine sediments, where they are found mixed with heavy radioactive natural elements such as U, Th and their also radioactive decay products. But since alkaline are so abundant on earth, it is also found natural radioactive isotope 4~K, 0.0118% of isotopes forming K element, with half life 1.28 ~ l09, in the time range of planet age and elements origin. So, one easy way to assess both the importance and evaluation of radioactive contamination at global scale should be to establish a RCF （radioactive contamination factor） as a percentage of 137Cs contaminant radioactivity in marine sediments, compared to 4~K natural radioactivity present from the very beginning of earth, both expressed as Bq per gram of sediment. In the frame of these rather general considerations, a research project has started in Mexico whose varied purposes are： to characterize sea regions in both vast littorals in the country, by its natural 4~K radioactivity present in sea salts, as well as to determine if 137Cs traces produced by recent radioactive contamination have reached their coasts. Also, to assess the 137Cs traces already present in marine sediments as a result of more than two thousand nuclear test explosions performed till now, rather than contamination produced by four main accidents in nuclear reactors during the last 60 years.
