Soft tissue swelling incidence using demineralized bone matrix in the outpatient setting

AIm To assess use of demineralized bone matrix(DBm) use in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion(ACDF) in outpatient *** One hundred and forty-five patients with prospectively collected data undergoing single and two level ACDF with DBm packed within and anterior to polyetheretherketone(PEEK) cages. Two groups created, Group 1(75) outpatients and control Group 2(70) hospital patients. Prevertebral soft tissue swelling(PVSTS) was measured anterior to C2 and C6 on plain lateral cervical radiographs preoperatively and one week postoperatively and fusion assessed at two years. RESULTS There was no intergroup significance between preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scales(VAS)and neck disability index(NDI) scores between Group 1 and 2. mean preoperative PVSTS in Group 1 was 4.7 ± 0.2 mm at C2 level and 11.1 ± 0.5 at C6 level compared to Group 2 mean PVSTS of 4.5 ± 0.5 mm and 12.8 ± 0.5, P = 0.172 and 0.127 respectively. There was no radiographic or clinical evidence of adverse reaction noted. In Group 1 mean postoperative PVSTS was 5.5 ± 0.4 mm at C2 and 14.9 ± 0.6 mm at C6 compared Group 2 mean PVSTS was 4.9 ± 0.3 mm at C2 and 14.8 ± 0.5 mm at C6, P = 0.212 and 0.946 respectively. No significant increase in prevertebral soft tissue space at C2 and C6 level *** ACDF with adjunct DBm packed PEEK cages showed a statistical significant intragroup improvement in VAS neck pain scores and NDI scores(P = 0.001). There were no reported serious patient complications; post-operative radiographs demonstrated no significant difference in prevertebral space. We conclude that ACDF with DBmpacked PEEK cages can be safely done in an ASC with satisfactory outcomes.

Salsolinol as an RNA m~6A methylation inducer mediates dopaminergic neuronal death by regulating YAP1 and autophagy

Salsolinol(1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline,Sal)is a catechol isoquinoline that causes neurotoxicity and shares structural similarity with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine,an environmental toxin that causes Parkinson's ***,the mechanism by which Sal mediates dopaminergic neuronal death remains *** this study,we found that Sal significantly enhanced the global level of N~6-methyladenosine(m~6A)RNA methylation in PC12 cells,mainly by inducing the downregulation of the expression of m~6A demethylases fat mass and obesity-associated protein(FTO)and alk B homolog 5(ALKBH5).RNA sequencing analysis showed that Sal downregulated the Hippo signaling *** m~6A reader YTH domain-containing family protein 2(YTHDF2)promoted the degradation of m~6A-containing Yes-associated protein 1(YAP1)mRNA,which is a downstream key effector in the Hippo signaling ***,downregulation of YAP1 promoted autophagy,indicating that the mutual regulation between YAP1 and autophagy can lead to *** findings reveal the role of Sal on m~6A RNA methylation and suggest that Sal may act as an RNA methylation inducer mediating dopaminergic neuronal death through YAP1 and *** results provide greater insights into the neurotoxic effects of catechol isoquinolines compared with other studies and may be a reference for assessing the involvement of RNA methylation in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.

A surface engineering strategy for the stabilization of zinc metal anodes with montmorillonite layers toward long-life rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries （AZIBs） exhibit appreciable potential in the domain of electrochemical energy ***,there are serious challenges for AZIBs,for instance zinc dendrite growth,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER）,and corrosion side ***,we propose a surface engineering modification strategy for coating the montmorillonite （mmT） layer onto the surface of the Zn anode to tackle these issues,thereby achieving high cycling stability for rechargeable *** results reveal that the mmT layer on the surface of the Zn anode is able to provide ordered zincophilic channels for zinc ions migration,facilitating the reaction kinetics of zinc *** functional theory（DFT） calculations and water contact angle （CA） tests prove that mmT@Zn anode exhibits superior adsorption capacity for Zn2+and better hydrophobicity than the bare Zn anode,thereby achieving excellent cycling ***,the mmT@Zn||mmT@Zn symmetric cell holds the stable cycling over 5600 h at 0.5 mA cm-2and 0.125 m A h cm-2,even exceeding 1800 h long cycling under harsh conditions of 5 m A cm-2and 1.25 m A h *** mmT@Zn||V2O5full cell reaches over 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1with excellent rate ***,this surface engineering modification strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of AZIBs represents a promising application.

Enhancing output performance of triboelectric nanogenerator by increasing charge storage capacity of electrodes

ABSTRACT:The practical application of rotating triboelectric nanogenerators is often limited by the wear of high-friction surface materials and low surface charge *** addition to the charge pump replenishment strategy,suppressing charge decay is also crucial for increasing surface charge ***,we present a high performance rotary triboelectric nanogenerator(HPR-TENG)based on a coplanar charge pumping strategy and polyvinyl chloride(PVC)*** has been demonstrated that applying PVC film to the surface of the storage electrode of the main TENG(m-TENG)significantly enhances the m-TENG’s output ***,the HPR-TENG with three layers of PVC film pasted achieved the best output performance,with a peak-topeak output voltage of 2828 V,a peak-to-peak output current of 327μA and a charge transfer of 0.81μC at 500 *** addition,the output improvement effects of different materials are *** TENG with 3 layers of PVC film pasted on it has a maximum output power of 748 mW at a load resistance of 4×10^(6)Ω.HPR-TENG’s output performance remains consistent after 100,000 cycles,which shows excellent *** excellent electrical performance of the HPR-TENG can be used as the energy supply for the tip high-voltage breakdown sensor system,which can achieve 14 breakdowns in 10 *** to its extraordinary electrical performance,HPRTENG can not only serve as an energy supply for cutting-edge high-voltage breakdown sensor systems,but also has the potential to serve as an energy supply for high-pressure sterilization,high-pressure vacuum and water electrolysis.

A cloud-based platform to predict wind pressure coefficients on buildings

Natural ventilation(NV)is a key passive strategy to design energy-efficient buildings and improve indoor air ***,accurate modeling of the NV effects is a basic requirement to include this technique during the building design ***,there is an important lack of wind pressure coefficients(CP)data,essential input parameters for NV *** this,there are no simple but still reliable tools to predict CP data on buildings with arbitrary shapes and surrounding conditions,which means a significant limitation to NV modeling in real *** this reason,the present contribution proposes a novel cloud-based platform to predict wind pressure coefficients on *** platform comprises a set of tools for performing fully unattended computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer and getting reliable CP data for actual ***-expert decisions throughout the entire workflow are implemented to automatize the generation of the computational domain,the meshing procedure the solution stage,and the post-processing of the *** evaluate the performance of the platform,an exhaustive validation against wind tunnel experimental data is carried out for a wide range of case *** include buildings with openings,balconies,irregular floor-plans,and surrounding urban *** C_(P) results are in close agreement with experimental data,reducing 60%-77% the prediction error on the openings regarding the EnergyPlus *** platform introduced shows being a reliable and practical C_(P) data source for NV modeling in real building design scenarios.

Rehabilitation of degraded areas in northeastern Patagonia, Argentina: Effects of environmental conditions and plant functional traits on performance of native woody species

Degradation processes affect a vast area of arid and semi-arid lands around the world and damage the environment and people′s health. Degradation processes are driven by human productive activities that cause direct and indirect effects on natural resources, such as species extinction at regional scale, reduction and elimination of vegetation cover, soil erosion, etc. In this context, ecological rehabilitation is an important tool to recover key aspects of the degraded ecosystem. Rehabilitation trials rely on the use of native plant species with characteristics that allow them to obtain high survival and growth rates. The aim of this work was to assess the survival and growth of native woody species in degraded areas of northeastern Patagonia and relate them to plant functional traits and environmental variables. We observed high early and late survival rates, and growth rates in Prosopis flexuosa DC. var. depressa F.A. Roig and Schinus johnstonii F.A. Barkley, and low values in Condalia microphylla Cav. and Geoffroea decorticans(Gillies ex Hook. & Arn.) Burkart. Early survival rates were positively associated with specific leaf area(SLA) and precipitation, but negatively associated with wood density, the maximum mean temperature of the warmest month and the minimum mean temperature of the coldest month. Late survival rates were positively associated with SLA and soil organic matter, but negatively associated with plant height and precipitation. The temperature had a positive effect on late survival rates once the plants overcame the critical period of the first summer after they were transplanted to the field. Prosopis flexuosa and S. johnstonii were the most successful species in our study. This could be due to their functional traits that allow these species to acclimatize to the local environment. Sequence-activated chemiluminescence(CL) technique offers a unique approach to detecting specific biomolecules or cellular events with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. The fundamental principle behind sequence-activated CL probes involves tailoring highly-controllable CL signals in response to specific sequences or events of interest, thus enabling high-contrast signals under complex physiological conditions. This sequential activation could be triggered by enzymes, reactive oxygen species(ROS), biothiols or changes in the microenvironment. These unique sequence-activated CL probes bestow several advantages, including minimal background, deep-tissue penetration, and the ability of non-invasive or minimally invasive detection. The sequence-activated CL techniques represent a significant advancement in molecular imaging and diagnostics. In this mini-review, we focus on the latest developments in sequential CL probes, addressing the technical challenges and discussing the future trajectory by harnessing CL signaling and molecular recognition.

Real-time hybrid simulation for structural control performance assessment

Real-time hybrid simulation is an attractive method to evaluate the response of structures under earthquake loads. The method is a variation of the pseudodynamic testing technique in which the experiment is executed in real time, thus allowing investigation of structural systems with rate-dependent components. Real-time hybrid simulation is challenging because it requires performance of all calculations, application of displacements, and acquisition of measured forces, within a very small increment of time. Furthermore, unless appropriate compensation for actuator dynamics is implemented, stability problems are likely to occur during the experiment. This paper presents an approach for real-time hybrid simulation in which compensation for actuator dynamics is implemented using a model-based feedforward compensator. The method is used to evaluate the response of a semi-active control of a structure employing an mR damper. Experimental results show good agreement with the predicted responses, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method for structural control performance assessment.

Saxicolous lichen communities in three basins associated with mining activity in northwestern Argentina

mining activity affects the vegetation and soils of the ***,the effects of mining activity on saxicolous lichen communities are less ***,the aim of this study was to characterize saxicolous lichen communities in three basins(Vis-Vis River basin,Poteros River basin,and Capillitas River basin)surrounding metalliferous mining projects of different types of operation and at different stages of exploitation.A large-scale mine(Bajo de la Alumbrera)with more than 25 a of open-pit mining located in the Vis-Vis River basin(CRV).A pre-exploitation mine(Agua Rica)located in the Poteros River basin(CRP),and a small-scale mine(minas Capillitas)with more than 160 a of underground mining located in the Capillitas River basin(CAC).In each basin,species richness,cover,and frequency of lichen communities were measured on 40 rock ***,explanatory variables were recorded,i.e.,altitude,slope,aspect,vegetation cover,rock,and soil cover around the rocky area *** and total cover of lichen communities were analysed using linear models,and species composition was explored using multivariate ordination *** showed that a total of 118 lichen species were *** species richness differed among basins and the lichen composition present in areas close to mining sites responded mainly to basins,altitude,and microsite *** lichen cover showed no difference among basins,but it changed under different rock and vegetation *** was not possible to quantify the effects of mining activity on species richness and ***,the low richness values found in the downstream of minera Alumbrera could be associated with the negative impact of open-pit ***,the effects of large-scale mining activity on lichen communities needs more investigation.
