Amphibians are thought to be highly susceptible to perturbed environments. However, recent studies show that many of them are successful inhabitants of disturbed, fragmented habitats. The source of this resilience is yet unclear, but it may be the byproduct of having a robust phenotype and/or the result of phenotypic plasticity. We then assessed the contribution of each by evaluating cytological features of two brain nuclei that modulate reproductive behavior and of the ovary, using female specimens of the frog Diaglena spatulata prospering in conserved and disturbed areas of a tropical dry forest. Our results in the brain show that the medial amygdala, but not the preoptic area, had a reduced size in frogs collected in disturbed forests compared to specimens collected in conserved forests. Both brain nuclei displayed, however, neurons with a reduced size in frogs captured in disturbed forest patches. In contrast, ovarian cytological features were similar between groups. Our preliminary results lead us to propose that Diaglena spatulata female specimens might combine robust ovary and plastic brain’s phenotypic traits to confront disturbed environments. This, however, is still a working hypothetical framework that needs to be experimentally confirmed.

Sand attrition in conical spouted beds

A study was carried out on the attrition in conical spouted beds using two sands with different properties for several bed heights and gas flow rates. Furthermore, the influence of a draft tube was studied at ambient and high temperatures. The main objective was to acquire knowledge on the attrition of sand beds for biomass pyrolysis in a pilot plant provided with a conical spouted bed reactor. A first-order kinetic equation is proposed for sand attrition in a conical spouted bed at room temperature. The predicted attrition rate constant depends exponentially on excess air velocity over that for minimum spouting. Both the draft tube and temperature increase contribute to reduction of attrition.

Efficacy and long-term evaluation of intramyocardial injection of autologous CD34-enriched PBMSC in old myocardial infarction

Aims: We have shown that autologous transplant of CD34+-enriched peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMSC) could restore depressed myocardial function, and sustain adequate myocardial function 12 months after surgery in patients with old (>one year-old) myocardial infarction. Our aim is to report the long-term morbidity and mortality efficacy of this procedure. Methods and results: Seventy patients with an old anteroseptal myocardial infarction were followed for 2 to 7 years, 35 had a revascularization procedure and received an intra-myocardial injection of autologous CD34+-enriched PBMSC (8 × 108 mononuclear cells/ml including 3 × 107 CD34+ cells/ml)(Group A). Group B patients only had the revascularization. Abnormal pre-surgical values of LVEF (33.2% ± 4.8%), LVDV (178 ± 13.7 ml), LVSV (120 ± 16 m), LVDD (58.9 ± 3.84 mm), E and A waves without contractility in infarction area in group A patients improved to approximate normal values (50% ± 3% for LVEF;90 ± 9.3 ml for LVDV;80 ± 9.9 ml for LVSV;55.3 ± 3 mm for LVDD;5.2 ± 0.5 cm/s for E wave and 4.18 ± 0.3 cm/s for A wave) 1 year after the procedure and have remained unaltered for all the follow-up period. All the patients remain alive. Only seven patients have been readmitted to the hospital for non-myocardial related events. Group B only 11 patients continued alive to 5 years after surgery and LEVF never increased more than 6%, all of them with many hospitalizations (n ≥ 10) by heart failure events. Conclusion: Intramyocardial injection of CD34+ highly enriched PBSC represent an encouraging alternative for patients with severely scarred and dysfunctional myocardium.

Toxic and nutritional effects of annonaceous acetogenins and their semisynthetic analogues on Spodoptera frugiperda were evaluated. Structural modification of the natural ACG, blocking the OH flanking THF with MOM, allowed us to suggest the mode of action of ACG in the membrane. Our study emphasizes the role of the flanking OH and acetyl groups of THF with the membrane hydrophilic polar head groups. They are essential structural factors in the ACG that facilitate the intermolecular interaction that dehydrates the membrane and makes it potentially toxic against Spodoptera frugiperda.

Hyperammonemia induced oxidative stress in cirrhotic rats without promoting differential protein expression in the brain cortex: A 2D-DIGE analysis

Oxidative stress induced by a high ammonia concentration could modify protein expression in the brain. This study was undertaken in order to investigate the impact of hyperammonemia, caused by thioacetmide (TAA) in rats, on brain cortex protein expression using 2D-DIGE, and analyzing its role in the pathogenesis of HE. Hyperammonemia was induced with TAA. Ammonia and active oxidants were measured by L-glutamate dehydrogenase and dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate methods, respectively. Lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation biomarkers were also studied. Differential protein expression in the cortex of TAA- and control-rats was studied by 2D-DIGE. Image analysis was performed using the DeCyder? Software. Ammonia concentration in plasma and brain tissue was higher in TAA-rats compared to control-rats, 3.12 and 2.43 fold higher, respectively. Active oxidants production in TAA-rats was increased by 2.7 fold compared to control-rats. Measurements of MDA, HNE and carbonyl groups, biomarkers of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation respectively, were found to be statistically significantly increased in TAA-rats compared to control-rats (3.16-, 2.44- and 1.95-fold, respectively), reflecting the presence of oxidative stress in the brain of TAA-rats. 2D-DIGE analysis of brain cortex protein allowed the detection of 2896 spots, however, image analysis showed no statistically significant differential protein expression between the proteins expressed in TAA- and control-rats. No statistical significant differential protein expression in the cortex of TAA-rats was observed, although oxidative stress biomarkers for lipid and proteins were higher in the brain of TAA-rats than in control-rats. These results support the idea that oxidative post-translational modifications are implicated in HE physiopathology.

Preparation of Rapid Hardening Mortars Using Ultrafine Portland Cement

During the hydration process, the Ultra-fine Cements present specific physical and chemical characteristics; they are, very short setting time and high heat release. For special applications, such as rapid hardening and early high strength mortars or concretes, these characteristics can be considered advantageous. Some commercial products used for concrete reinforcement and repairs are the Rapid Hardening Mortars, these mortars must develop a time of setting up to 3 h and an initial compressive strength of about 3.5 MPa once the hardening of the paste is reached. The objective of the present research work is to use Ultra-fine Cement for the preparation of a series of different Rapid Hardening Mortars （with different percentages of Ultra-fine Cement）, these mortars required the addition of a polycarboxylate-base specification F Superplasticizer. It was observed that the optimum water/cement （W/C） ratio for the hydration of the Ultra-fine Cements is W/C = 0.385. The Ultra-fine Cements were obtained by the High Energy Ball-milling technique at laboratory scale, 90% of the Particle Size Distribution is below 11 μm and the Blaine Specific Surface Area is over 9000 cm^2/g.

Radon exhalation from phosphogypsum stabilized in sulfur polymer cement

Phosphogypsum (PG), primary by-product from phosphoric acid production, is accumulated in large stock-piles which were active until 2010, when spills were banned. It is considered as NORM material that contains radionuclides from 238U and decay series which are of most radiotoxicity. PG was valorized and/or recycled in a building material, sulfur polymer cement (SPC). The SPC-PG samples reach the international regulation to use in the manufacture of building materials without radiological restrictions, except the sample with the 50% of PG. Under normal conditions of ventilation the contribution to the expected radon indoor concentration is also below the international recommendation.

Cell therapy has shown beneficial effects on ventricular function and tissue regeneration in patients with acute and chronic myocardial infarction, although with diverse grades of variability in the results, possibly by proportion, subtype and cell cycle status. Objective: Identify and phenotypically characterize, via CXCR4 and SDF-1 expression, the bone marrow cell subpopulations that are mobilized into the bloodstream in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Acute Ischemia (AI) such as acute angina and Chronic Ischemia (CI) such as chronic stable angina, and also determine the cell cycle status of these cells. Method: Patients with AMI and AI were recruited in the ICCU, and patients with CI in the departments of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The quantification of cellular subpopulations was made by cytofluorometry with a FACS caliburcyto fluorometry (Becton Dickinson) with specific FITC-labeled anti human monoclonal antibodies against CD34, CD133, CD117, CD48, CXCR4, SDF-1 and Ki67 (Becton Dickinson). Serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 were determined by a sequential solid phase chemiluminescent assay performed in a SIEMENS IMMULITE 1000 Analyzer. Statistical analysis was made with the SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. A p value 3/ml) than that in AI (9.2 ± 1.3 × 103/ml) and CI (6.6 ± 1.1 × 103/ml) patients (p p = 0.22 to 0.39), but interestingly in AMI and AI patients, cells were CXCR4+ in almost half of these mobilized cells, although the proportion was significantly higher in AMI patients (46.8% ± 7.1% to 55.7% ± 6.3% vs 23% ± 1.6% to 28.4% ± 2.1%, p = 0.03 to 0.05). A similar behavior was observed with the Ki67 antibody (29.9% ± 2.1% to 36.1% ± 6.3% vs 10% ± 1.2% to 24% ± 1.1%, p = 0.001 to 0.05). Bivariate analysis of the results showed a significant correlation of the cell proportion in AMI but not in AI and CI patients (p = 0.001 to 0.05;0.12 to 0.87 and 0.17 to 0.92 respectively).
