AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHODS:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FSH(P<0.001 vscontrols)and increased levels of LH in untreated cirrhotic ***,IGF-1 treatment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and P<0.01 vs untreated cirrhotic group). CONCLUSION:The testicular barrier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Background:In this study,we aimed to investigate the molecular basis of lactation as well as to identify the genetic factors that influence milk yield and composition in *** achieve these two goals,we have analyzed how the mRNA profile of the mammary gland changes in seven Murciano-Granadina goats at each of three different time points,i.e.78 d(T1,early lactation),216 d(T2,late lactation)and 285 d(T3,dry period)after ***,we have performed a genome-wide association study(GWAS)for seven dairy traits recorded in the 1st lactation of 822 Murciano-Granadina ***:The expression profiles of the mammary gland in the early(T1)and late(T2)lactation were quite similar(42 differentially expressed genes),while strong transcriptomic differences(more than one thousand differentially expressed genes)were observed between the lactating(T1/T2)and non-lactating(T3)mammary glands.A large number of differentially expressed genes were involved in pathways related with the biosynthesis of amino acids,cholesterol,triglycerides and steroids as well as with glycerophospholipid metabolism,adipocytokine signaling,lipid binding,regulation of ion transmembrane transport,calcium ion binding,metalloendopeptidase activity and complement and coagulation *** regard to the second goal of the study,the performance of the GWAS allowed us to detect 24 quantitative trait loci(QTLs),including three genome-wide significant associations:QTL1(chromosome 2,130.72-131.01 Mb)for lactose percentage,QTL6(chromosome 6,78.90-93.48 Mb)for protein percentage and QTL17(chromosome 17,11.20 Mb)for both protein and dry matter ***,QTL6 shows positional coincidence with the casein genes,which encode 80%of milk ***:The abrogation of lactation involves dramatic changes in the expression of genes participating in a broad array of physiological processes such as protein,lipid and carbohydrate metabolism,calcium homeostasis,cell death and tissue remo

AIM： To determine whether different intravitreal doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin lead to electroretinographic or histological changes in the rabbit retina over one month period after injection. METHODS： Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three treatment groups （groups 1 to 3） and different intravitreal doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin were tested in each group. The right eye was injected with the drug and the left eye received intravitreal injection of 5% dextrose water and served as control eye. The doses delivered to each group were 0.1 mg/0.1 mL, 1 mg/0.1 mL and 10 mg/0.1 mL. Simultaneous, bilateral, dark-adapted electroretinography and clinical images of both eyes were obtained in all groups before injection （baseline） and after 7, 14, 21 and 28d, followed by enucleation for histological examination. RESULTS： Subjects in the group 1 showed no signs of toxicity in the electroretinogram when compared with groups 2 and 3 （Kruskall-Wallis test, P=0.000）. By day 7, no electrical response to light stimuli was recorded in the treated eyes in groups 2 and 3, consistent with severe damage due to retinal toxicity. Light microscopy revealedno significant histopathological changes in the group 1, while rabbits in groups 2 and 3 had signs of granulomatous inflammation in most cases. CONCLUSION： Intravitreal 0.1 mg/0.1 mL doses of quinupristin/dalfopristin do not lead to electroretinographic or histological signs of retinal toxicity compared with 1 mg/0.1 mL and 10 mg/O.1 mL in this rabbit model.

IMT504: A New and Potent Adjuvant for Rabies Vaccines Permitting Significant Dose Sparing

Background: Rabies virus infection causes encephalitis, which is almost always fatal. Vaccination can be extremely effective at preventing disease but is prohibitively costly. Vaccine formulations allowing dose-sparing and fewer inoculations with faster antibody response would be extremely desirable. IMT504, an immunostimulatory non-CpG oligo-deoxynucleotide, is a highly potent vaccine adjuvant. Methods: Human and rat antibody measurements, and rat chal-lenge studies were performed. Results: In rats, highly effective immune responses with IMT504 were observed even after diluting vaccine up to 1/625. In highly lethal, live intracerebral rabies challenge studies, protection occurred even with extremely dilute vaccine plus IMT504. In humans, antibody titers developed faster and were significantly higher with IMT504-adjuvanted diluted vaccine vs non-adjuvanted vaccine (full strength or diluted). All five administered IMT504-adjuvanted diluted vaccine reached protective antibodies (≥0.5 IU/ml) after the second injection. After the third injection, individuals receiving IMT504-adjuvanted diluted vaccine reached levels approximately 10 times higher than controls (M ± SEM: 31.0 ± 10.9 vs 3.40 ± 0.99 IU/ml). Conclusions: These data suggest that IMT504 may allow fewer inoculations, highly significant dose-sparing of vaccine, rapid antibody production and protection from rabies. Extensive clinical studies are necessary to confirm if the use of IMT504 will permit significantly greater access to highly effective life-saving rabies vaccines.

Comparative voltammetry and differential double-layer capacitance studies were performed to evaluate interfacial interactions between cnalcopyrite（CuFeS2） and n-isopropyl xanthate（X） in the presence of ammonium bisulfite/39wt%SO2 and caustic starch at different pH *** spectroscopy,Fourier transform infrared（FTIR） spectroscopy,contact angle measurements,and microflotation tests were used to establish the type and extent of xanthate adsorption as well as the species involved under different mineral surface conditions in this *** results demonstrate that the species that favor a greater hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite are primarily CuX and S^0,whereas oxides and hydroxides of Cu and Fe as well as an excess of starch decrease the hydrophobicity.A conditioning of the mineral surface with ammonium bisulfite/39wt%SO2 at pH 6 promotes the activation of surface and enhances the xanthate ***,this effect is diminished at pH ≥ 8,when an excess of starch is added during the preconditioning step.

Association of Vegetable Consumption with Nutritional Status in Adolescents in Mexico City

It has been documented that increased vegetable consumption is associated with preventive effects in some public health problems such as obesity and some chronic noncommunicable diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the association of nutritional status with vegetable consumption in adolescents from Technical High Schools in Mexico City. A sample of 2368 adolescents was obtained who were applied a questionnaire of frequency food consumption and anthropometric measurements were taken, the nutritional diagnosis was obtained with Who Anthro Plus program. The data obtained were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS version 20.0 for Windows Statistics®. When the correlation of frequency consumption of vegetables with nutritional status, in the final phase, It found that teens who never ate vegetables were more likely to develop obesity (36.0% GI and 36.10% GC), compared with teens who consumed daily (8.9% GI and 2.10% GC), existing difference highly significant. The teenagers of the Technical High School in Mexico City in the intervention group presented a basal daily intake of 15.7% and after the intervention their intake increased to 21.3%. With respect to the control group it started with a daily intake of 12.6% to 14.9% increasing it. An increase was achieved in the daily consumption of vegetables in adolescents of both groups so it is concluded that the intervention was successful.

In this study,10 bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of coniferous trees on Mount Tla′loc in *** strains were characterized by their capacity to produce auxins,solubilize phosphates and stimulate mycelial growth of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Suillus *** isolates were identified at the molecular ***,an experiment was established to evaluate the response of Pinus pseudostrobus seedlings to inoculation with the rhizobacteria *** isolated strains belonged to the species Cupriavidus basilensis,Rhodococcus qingshengii,***,Pseudomonas spp.,***,Stenotrophomonas rhizophila and Cohnella *** of the strains produced auxins;the best producer was *** CPT9(76.4 lg mL^-1).*** CPT6 solubilized phosphate at a significant level(443 lg mL^-1).The strain *** CPT8 significantly increased the radial growth of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Suillus *** 18.8%.Five strains increased the dry mass of the shoots;*** CPT4 and *** CPT9 increased growth the most,by more than 20%.Inoculation with plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria can be a very useful practice in a forest nursery to produce healthy,vigorous plants.

Amphibians and Reptiles of Luzon Island, Philippines: the Herpetofauna of Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, Nueva Ecija Province, Caraballo Mountain Range

We present detailed species accounts for fifty-nine(59) species of amphibians and reptiles(17 frogs, 14 skinks, 3 agamids, 6 gekkonid lizards, 2 varanids, and 17 snakes) from Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, which lies within the Caraballo Mountain Range, whose biota is poorly-known. This was also the first extensive survey of herpetofauna within the watershed. Together with data from previous literature reviews, our records bring the total number of species of amphibians and reptiles for the Caraballo Mountain Range to 66. Forty-two(42) species from the area were Philippine endemics, with 25 species recorded only from Luzon faunal region. Seven species of herpetofauna are associated with unresolved taxonomic issues(new species and species complexes needing taxonomic partitioning, e.g. splitting of species groups). Two species recorded from the area were rarely represented in museum collections. Major distributional and elevational range extensions were recorded for several species. Comparison with Luzon’s other mountain ranges showed that the Caraballo Mountain Range is similar, in terms of species composition, to the northern sierra Madre and Cordillera Mountain Ranges. The result of this survey showed the Caraballo Mountain Range and its mountains as a possible new center of herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity within Luzon. The importance of the Caraballo Mountain Range as an important biogeographic link merits further study.

Home range variability and philopatry in Cinereous vultures(Aegypius monachus)breeding in Iberia

Large scavengers are strongly dependent on environmental conditions and carrion distribution and abundance,so season and breeding-related factors may influence the spatial ecology of species such as the Cinereous Vulture(Aegypius monachus),the largest European *** holds one of the biggest populations worldwide,but some aspects of the spatial ecology of the species in this region remain *** this study,17 adult Cinereous Vultures were GPS-tracked in order to study their spatial ecology during the adult *** average monthly home ranges(95%Kernel Density Estimation,KDE)and core areas(50%KDE)were 6543±19,935 km^(2)and 1174±4004 km^(2),*** average monthly home range fidelity ranged between 50 and 73%.Differences in movement-related variables between the seasonal periods(incubation,chick-rearing and non-breeding)were *** the chick-rearing period,the monthly accumulated distance was higher than during the other periods:3316±1108(chick-rearing)vs.1621±622(incubation)vs.1726±1159 km per month(nonbreeding).Additionally,large home range sizes were more frequent during the chick-rearing *** are two likely causes for these seasonal ***,chick-rearing entails a higher energetic expenditure by the parental individuals in foraging activities,so larger movements and foraging areas are expected during this ***,the flight is favoured during spring and summer due to environmental *** chick-rearing and warm months is a great evolutionary advantage for soaring-gliding raptors,as it allows them to cover larger areas with low energy ***,six individuals tagged as nestlings highlight the philopatric behaviour of the species:vultures settle their breeding areas 54±51 km from their natal nest(range=9–138 km).
