Masting effect on alpha and beta avian diversity in fragmented forests of relict?endangered Mexican Beech(Fagus grandifolia subsp.mexicana)

Background:Tropical montane cloud forests are one of the most important hotspots on Earth and show presence of relict-endemic and endangered species,representing about 14%of the total tropical forest worldwide.Synchronous seed production or masting in tropical montane cloud tree species is a widespread reproductive strategy of decidu-ous and evergreen broad-leaved tree associations to decrease costs of reproduction and ensure offspring.Masting event maintains a high avian diversity,which can be modified by phenological process(seed production and non-seed production).Methods:The main aim of this study was to assess alpha and beta avian diversity and whether the composition of the trophic guild modifies among phenological processes and between two fragmented relict-endangered Mexican Beech(Fagus grandifolia subsp.mexicana)forests(Medio Monte and El Gosco)in the Mexican state of Hidalgo.In addi-tion,we evaluated beechnut production.Results:We recorded 36 bird species,11 of them included in some conservation risk status,and 5 endemic species.Alpha diversity values were dissimilar in avian richness(q=0)among phenological processes and between frag-mented beech forests.Avian communities among three phenological processes and between fragmented forests were structurally similar,dominated during immature seeds the Brown-backed Solitaire(granivores-insectivores-frugivores);during mature seeds the White-crowned Parrot(Pionus senilis,granivores-frugivores);and the Dwarf Jay(Cyanolyca nana,insectivores)was abundant during low seed quality.The complementarity index was high among phenological processes and low between forests.We found a high bird turnover value between immature seeds—mature seeds and during mature seeds—low seed quality.Furthermore,a similar pattern was recorded between the two study forests.Seed production showed a high number of undamaged beechnuts in Medio Monte,while in El Gosco beechnuts were attacked by insects.Conclusions:Our results reflect that masting phenological process and contrasting study fore

Macro level performance study of Ahmadabad bus rapid transit system:Janmarg

Amidst the rapid urbanization in the country,the importance of urban public transport has been realized by the governments.Public transport is vital to the city's economy and ensures social equity.Bus Rapid Transit System(BRTS)has emerged as an exciting way to decongest the cities,enhancing and increasing mobility and accessi-bility and promoting transit-oriented development.India's longest BRTS,Janmarg,was created with similar ob-jectives.However,the system faces reduced ridership and inhibited growth because of its hidden inefficiencies.This research aims to identify all the factors affecting ridership,accessibility,and inhibiting the system's growth even after having sufficient infrastructure.It also aims to quantitatively determine whether Janmarg could achieve its establishment's objectives on the city transportation system after thirteen years of the successful implementation of the project.The research methodology used in this work combines primary and secondary research.The factors are responsible for preventing Janmarg from achieving its objectives and utilizing its full potential are determined and recommended ways to utilize adversities effectively.Results show that this study endorses reducing ambiguities and a way forward for making a sustainable transportation system.

Study of reverse osmosis membranes fouling by inorganic salts and colloidal particles during seawater desalination

Fouling phenomenon is considered among the major reasons that cause significant increase of operating cost of desalination plants equipped with reverse osmosis(RO)membranes.This phenomenon is studied in the present work in the case of RO polyamide aromatic membranes using model seawater containing inorganic salts and colloidal compounds.Different solubility conditions of CaCO3 and CaSO4 were applied to study RO performances with and without colloid presence.During experiments,the membrane permeate fluxes were continuously monitored.Moreover,studies of chemical composition,structure,and morphology of the materials deposited on the membrane surface were conducted using energy dispersive microanalysis(EDS)X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy(SEM).Results show that in conditions of calcium carbonate oversaturation there is a reduction in the permeate flow of 11.2%due to fouling of the membrane by the precipitation of this compound.While in the same conditions of calcium sulphate oversaturation the reduction of the flow is 5%,so we can conclude that in conditions of oversaturation of both salts,calcium carbonate produces a greater fouling of the membrane that in its view causes greater decrease in the flow of permeate.All this based on the results of the test with both salts in oversaturated conditions.Resulting in the formation of calcite and gypsum crystals onto the membranes as XRD analyses stated.Additional presence of colloidal silica in those conditions intensifies strongly the fouling,leading until to 24.1%of permeate flux decrease.

Metapopulation approach for landscape level management of western tarnished plant bug,Lygus hesperus,in Texas( Hemiptera,Miridae)

Insect source-sink dynamics are vital to ecologically intensive pest management. Maintaining sink plant hosts,or "trap crops",and destroying alternate hosts or breeding places adjacent to the field crop are effective pest management strategies for some arthropods. However,determining whether a host acts as a source or a sink is challenging, especially when the pest species is highly mobile and polyphagous. The western tarnished plant bug,Lygus hesperus,is highly polyphagous,and can utilize >300 hosts. Its presence has been documented in 26 roadside weed hosts in the Texas High Plains.Previous studies demonstrated that L. hesperus prefer alfalfa over cotton and several alternate weed hosts.A four-year project involved surveying and sampling for L. hesperus in the agricultural landscapes of several sub-regions of the southwestern United States,including the Texas High Plains. In Texas,geographic information of the landscape vegetation complex was compiled from a 150 km radius in the Texas High Plains. In one study,fifty irrigated cotton fields representing the crop diversity within this region were sampled via sweep-net for 10 weeks. This effort also included sampling of up to six noncotton insect habitats within a 3 km radius of each field. Seasonal average L. hesperus abundance data were regressed with 27 field characteristics( variables),including habitat-specific land cover,distance between focal cotton fields and non-cotton habitats,longitude,latitude,elevation,habitat heterogeneity index,and several environmental / ecological variables. Significant variables were selected using a stepwise regression at 15% probability rate. A 10-parameter linear model explained 93% of the variation in the data. Major parameters contributing significantly to variation in L. hesperus abundance in cotton were corn and sunflower acreages,focal cotton field distances from several non-cotton hosts,and habitat heterogeneity index. An unsupervised pattern recognition methodology based on factor analysis and a genetic-DBSCAn algorithm to infer operational conditions from strain measurements in structural applications

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) suggests the use of machine learning algorithms with the aim of understanding specific behaviors in a structural system. This work introduces a pattern recognition methodology for operational condition clustering in a structure sample using the well known Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with noise(DBSCAn) algorithm.The methodology was validated using a data set from an experiment with 32 Fiber Bragg Gratings bonded to an aluminum beam placed in cantilever and submitted to cyclic bending loads under 13 different operational conditions(pitch angles). Further, the computational cost and precision of the machine learning pipeline called FA + GA-DBSCAn(which employs a combination of machine learning techniques including factor analysis for dimensionality reduction and a genetic algorithm for the automatic selection of initial parameters of DBSCAn) was measured. The obtained results have shown a good performance, detecting 12 of 13 operational conditions, with an overall precision over 90%.

Photodegradation and Removal of Diclofenac by the Green Alga nannochloropsis oculata

The emerging contaminants(ECs)are organic compounds including pharmaceuticals.These products are consumed in large quantities,favoring their continuous entrance to the environment and affecting the health of living beings.Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic properties of prolonged release.It is the commonest postoperative analgesic,and it is highly consumed without prescription.In recent years,the capability of microalgae to remove pharmaceuticals in water has been tested as a promising tool.In this work,the removal efficiency of diclofenac(16µg/mL)by the microalga nannochloropsis oculata CCAP 186/7 was evaluated.The major nutrient concentrations in Bold’s Basal Medium were modified(nitrogen and carbon:50 and 100%of their original concentration)to know their effect in the removal of diclofenac.Drug degradation by light was also evaluated.The maximum removal capacity of diclofenac in the medium was 68.8%.The percentage of diclofenac adsorbed on the cell wall was between 6 and 12.7%.Around 23.6%of diclofenac was degraded by light after 18 days.n.oculata did not show growth inhibition due to the presence of diclofenac.The results obtained point to the promissory application of n.oculata as a bioremediation system for diclofenac removal.

Pharmacokinetics of sildenafil in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension

Background:Recently,sildenafil was introduced to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH);however,there are currently few studies on the pharmacokinetics of sildenalfil in children.Therefore,we aimed to carry out a pharmacokinetic study of sildenafil in children with PAH using a single dose.Methods:Twelve children diagnosed with PAH,consisting of with ten males and two females,were recruited for the study after obtaining written consent from their parents or guardians.Blood samples were obtained predose and at 0.25,0.5,1,2,4,8 and 12 hours after the oral administration of 1 mg/kg of sildenafil using an extemporal pediatric formulation developed in our laboratory.The samples were analyzed using a previously validated high performance liquid chromatography method.Results:A pharmacokinetic analysis using the Winnonlin 3.1 program that considered the Akaike information criterion (AIC) for sdecting a more adjustable model was performed.The following pharmacokinetic parameters were obtained:maximal concentration (Cmax):366+179 ng/mL,time to maximal concentration:0.92±0.30 hours,elimination half-life (t1/2):2.41±1.18 hours,total clearance (CLto/F):5.85±2.81 L/hour,volume of distribution (Vd/F):20.13±14.5 L,absorption rate constants (Ka):0.343 hour-1,elimination rate (Ke):0.35 hour-1,area under curve from zero to infinity:2061±618 ng/mL/hour.The data of all patients adjusted to the model of one compartment were corroborated using AIC.Conclusions:The parameters Ka,Ke and t1/2 were found to be similar to those reported in adults;however,the values of Cmax and Vd/F were significantly higher.Based on these findings,we propose that treatment regimen of sildenafil be adjusted in children with PAH.

Global Information Resources on Rice for Research and Development

Various issues concerning the progress of rice research are related to ambiguous germplasm identification, difficulty in tracing pedigree information, and lack of integration between genetic resources, characterization, breeding, evaluation and utilization data. These issues are the constraints in developing knowledge-intensive crop improvement programs. The rapid growth, development and the global spread of modern information and communication technology allow quick adoption in fundamental research. Thus, there is a need to provide an opportunity for the establishment of services which describe the rice information for better accessibility to information resources used by researchers to enhance the competitiveness. This work reviews some of available resources on rice bioinformatics and their roles in elucidating and propagating biological and genomic information in rice research. These reviews will also enable stakeholders to understand and adopt the change in research and development and share knowledge with the global community of agricultural scientists. The establishment like International Rice Information System, Rice Genome Research Project and Integrated Rice Genome Explorer are major initiatives for the improvement of rice. Creation of databases for comparative studies of rice and other cereals are major steps in further improvement of genetic compositions. This paper will also highlight some of the initiatives and organizations working in the field of rice improvement and explore the availability of the various web resources for the purpose of research and development of rice. We are developing a meta web server for integration of online resources such as databases, web servers and journals in the area of bioinformatics. This integrated platform, with acronym iBIRA, is available online at http：//ibiranet.in. The resources reviewed here are the excerpts from the resources integrated in iBIRA.

The global pandemic,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),has significantly affected tourism,especially in Spain,as it was among the first countries to be affected by the pandemic and is among the world’s biggest tourist destinations.Stock market values are responding to the evolution of the pandemic,especially in the case of tourist companies.Therefore,being able to quantify this relationship allows us to predict the effect of the pandemic on shares in the tourism sector,thereby improving the response to the crisis by policymakers and investors.Accordingly,a dynamic regression model was developed to predict the behavior of shares in the Spanish tourism sector according to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic in the medium term.It has been confirmed that both the number of deaths and cases are good predictors of abnormal stock prices in the tourism sector.
