Nonlinear numerical assessment of the seismic response of hillside RC buildings

Major damage has been reported in hilly areas after major earthquakes,primarily because of two special conditions:the variation in the seismic ground motion due to the inclined ground surface and the irregularities caused by a stepped base level in the *** aim of this study is to evaluate possible differences in the responses of Chilean hillside buildings through numerical linear-elastic and nonlinear *** the first step,a set of response-spectrum analyses were performed on four simplified 2D structures with mean base inclination angles of 0°,15°,30°,and 45°.The structures were designed to comply with Chilean seismic codes and standards,and the primary response parameters were *** assess the seismic performance of the buildings,nonlinear static(pushover)and dynamic(time-history)analyses were performed with SeismoStruct *** analyses were used to compare the nonlinear response at the maximum roof displacement and the damage ***-history analyses were performed to assess the nonlinear dynamic response of the structures subjected to seismic ground motions modified by topographic *** consider the topographic modification,acceleration records were obtained from numerical models of soil,which were calculated using the rock acceleration record of the Mw 8.01985 Chilean *** differences in the structure responses(roof displacements and maximum element forces and moments)were caused by the topographic effects in the seismic input motion,with the highly predominant ones being the differences caused by the step-back configuration at the base of the *** concentrations of shear forces in short walls were observed,corresponding to the walls located in the upper zone of the foundation *** response of the structures with higher angles was observed to be more prone to fragile failures due to the accumulation of shear *** though hillside buildings gain stiffness in the lower stories,resulting

The testis is a double gland comprised of the sperm-producing seminiferous tubules and a complex endocrine *** former structures generate and release whole cells(exocrine aspect of the gland)while the latter synthesize and release androgens and related *** testis also has poorly understood paracrine *** connexions play an important role during spermatogenesis.A key molecule within these structures is β-***,the present study aims at examining the expression pattern of β-actin during the various stages of the spermatic cycle in the *** achieve this goal,we used a combination of trans-illumination assisted microdissection of seminiferous tubules,confocal immunofluorescence and Western blot *** experiments revealed that the levels of β-actin fluctuate significantly during spermatogenesis,peaking immediately after spermiation.

Hepatic encephalopathy: Ever closer to its big bang

Hepatic encephalopathy(HE) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that commonly complicates the course of patients with liver disease. Despite the fact that the syndrome was probably first recognized hundreds of years ago, the exact pathogenesis still remains unclear. Minimal hepatic encephalopathy(MHE) is the earliest form of HE and is estimated to affect more that 75% of patients with liver cirrhosis. It is characterized by cognitive impairment predominantly attention, reactiveness and integrative function with very subtle clinical manifestations. The development of MHE is associated with worsen in driving skills, daily activities and the increase of overall mortality. Skeletal muscle has the ability to shift from ammonia producer to ammonia detoxifying organ. Due to its large size, becomes the main ammonia detoxifying organ in case of chronic liver failure and muscular glutaminesynthase becomes important due to the failing liver and brain metabolic activity. Gut is the major glutamine consumer and ammonia producer organ in the body. Hepatocellular dysfunction due to liver disease, results in an impaired clearance of ammonium and in its interorgan trafficking. Intestinal bacteria, can also represent an extra source of ammonia production and in cirrhosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and symbiosis can be observed. In the study of HE, to get close to MHE is to get closer to its big bang; and from here, to travel less transited roads such as skeletal muscle and intestine, is to go even closer. The aim of this editorial is to expose this road for further and deeper work.

Changes in culm surface temperature with maturity of the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia

We used thermal images of bamboo culms of Guadua angustifolia Kunth to analyze the relationship between culm surface temperature and maturity, driven by the hypothesis that young culms may exhibit lower surface temperatures than old ones. The culm surface temperature shows small but constant differences between three age classes of 1, 2, and 3 years. Our findings indicate that surface temperature may be applied as an additional indi- cator to support the determination of maturity of guadua culms besides the visual assessment of the culms.

Recent advances in the study of human hepatocytes derived from induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSC)represent new promises for liver disease study and drug *** hepatocytes or hepatocyte-like cells differentiated from iPSC recapitulate many func-tional properties of primary human hepatocytes and have been demonstrated as a powerful and efficient tool to model human liver metabolic diseases and fa-cilitate drug development *** this review,we summarize the recent progress in this field and discuss the future perspective of the application of human iPSC derived hepatocytes.

A NETWORK ANALYSIS OF THE 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP CHAMPION TEAM PLAY

This paper analyzes the network of passes among the players of the Spanish team during the last FIFA World Cup 2010,where they emerged as the champion,with the objective of explaining the results obtained from the behavior at the complex network *** team is considered a network with players as nodes and passes as(directed) edges.A temporal analysis of the resulting passes network is also done,looking at the number of passes,length of the chain of passes,and to network measures such as player centrality and clustering *** of the last three matches(the decisive ones) indicate that the clustering coefficient of the pass network remains high,indicating the elaborate style of the Spanish *** effectiveness of the opposing team in negating the Spanish game is reflected in the change of several network measures over time,most importantly in drops of the clustering coefficient and passing length/speed,as well as in their being able in removing the most talented players from the central positions of the ***'s ability to restore their combinative game and move the focus of the game to offensive positions and talented players is shown to tilt the balance in favor of the Spanish team.

Rapid-onset antidepressant efficacy of glutamatergic system modulators:The neural plasticity hypothesis of depression

Depression is a devastating psychiatric disorder widely attributed to defi cient monoaminergic signaling in the central nervous system. However,most clinical antidepressants enhance monoaminergic neurotransmission with little delay but require 4-8 weeks to reach therapeutic efficacy,a paradox suggesting that the monoaminergic hypothesis of depression is an oversimplifi cation. In contrast to the antidepressants targeting the monoaminergic system,a single dose of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor（NMDAR） antagonist ketamine produces rapid（within 2 h） and sustained（over 7 days） antidepressant effi cacy in treatment-resistant patients. Glutamatergic transmission mediated by NMDARs is critical for experience-dependent synaptic plasticity and learning,processes that can be modifi ed indirectly by the monoaminergic system. To better understand the mechanisms of action of the new antidepressants like ketamine,we review and compare the monoaminergic and glutamatergic antidepressants,with emphasis on neural plasticity. The pathogenesis of depression may involve maladaptive neural plasticity in glutamatergic circuits that may serve as a new class of targets to produce rapid antidepressant effects.

Effect of genistein supplementation of thawing medium on characteristics of frozen human spermatozoa

In this study, we evaluated the effects of genistein supplementation of the thawing extender on frozen-thawed human semen parameters. We analyzed the effect of supplementation on sperm motility, capacitation （membrane lipid disorder）, reactive oxygen species （ROS） generation, chromatin condensation and DNA damage. Using this preliminary information, it maybe possible to improve the cryopreservation process and reduce the cellular damage. We have confirmed that the isoflavone genistein （10 μmol L-1） has antioxidant properties on the frozen-thawed spermatozoa. This results in a decreased ROS production that shows a slight improvement in the sperm motility, and decreases the membrane lipid disorder and DNA damage caused by cryopreservation. These results suggest an effect of genistein on sperm functionality that could be of interest for assisted reproduction treatments using frozen- thawed human spermatozoa, but further studies will be necessary to confirm our findings and to evaluate the possible clinical applications.

Age and sex differences in niche use at molt and its effect on plumage coloration characteristics in a bird

Bird plumage is often very colorful and can communicate the quality of the bearer to conspecifics. These plumage-based signals of quality are composed of multiple pigments (e.g., melanin and carote no ids). Therefore, sex and age classes, which often show marked differe nces in plumage coloration, may have different dietary needs for the different plumage components and this might promote pref ere nces for differe nt dietary niches at different molting stages. However, no study has addressed the role that changes in niche use play in the expression of multiple component plumage signals in birds. We used stable isotope analysis to test the hypothesis that niche use is related to age and sex and to differently cultured plumage patches, yellow carotenoid-based and black melanin-based, in great tits Parus major. We recorded high niche overlap between plumage patches, although δ15N was higher in black than yellow plumage. Niche overlap was relatively low for age classes and relatively high for sex classes, and age classes showed a contrasting pattern of niche overlap between carotenoid- and melanin-based plumages. Moreover,δ13C, but not δ15N, had a significant negative relationship with carotenoid-based plumage, which was only apparent in juveniles. Take n together, our results demonstrate that n iche use had a moderate in fluence on plumage coloration characteristics of great tit individuals, mostly associated with δ13C rather than with δ15N and with age rather than with sex. Therefore, our study is significant because it confirms the releva nee of n iche use duri ng orn ame nt production in free-livi ng birds.

For a bipartite graph G on m and n vertices, respectively, in its vertices classes, and for integers s andt such that 2≤ s ≤ t, 0≤ m-s ≤ n-t, andre＋n≤ 2s＋t-1, we prove that if G has at least mn- （2（m - s）＋ n - t） edges then it contains a subdivision of the complete bipartite K（s,t） with s vertices in the m-class and t vertices in the n-class. Furthermore, we characterize the corresponding extremal bipartite graphs with mn- （2（m - s）＋ n - t ＋ 1） edges for this topological Turan type problem.
