Repeatability of 3D OCT Pachymetry in Eyes with and without Contact Lens Induced Corneal Swelling

Introduction: Corneal thickness measurement is an indirect assessment of the physiological corneal function in human eye. This value, especially in the central area, is an important data for clinical diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of anterior segment pathologies. There are several technologies for non-invasively measuring corneal thickness like optical coherence tomography (OCT). However, there is little information available describing the effect of contact lens induced corneal swelling in OCT measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repeatability of OCT corneal pachymetry in eyes with and without contact lens induced corneal swelling. Material and Methods: This study included five visits over one week in six healthy subjects: baseline and after sleeping with four different CL of +0.50 D, +2.00 D, +5.00 D and +8.00 D (Acuvue 2, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care) on four different days. Corneal pachymetry OCT 3D (Topcon) were measured three consecutive times during each visit. Besides, this measurement was repeated in 12 meridians (Scans #1 to #12), between 0°and 165°with 15° intervals. Results: Corneal pachymetry was significant different between before and after contact lens wear (p < 0.001 ANOVA). High repeatability was found without corneal swelling [Coefficient of variation (CV) = 0.68% p = 0.93] and with corneal swelling [CL -0.50 D (CV = 0.78% p = 0.95;590 ± 46 μm CI 95% 548 to 596), with CL + 2.00 D (CV = 0.72% p = 0.97;601 ± 46 μm CI 95% 595 to 607), with CL + 5.00 D (CV = 0.78% p = 0.66;608 ± 50 μm CI 95% 601 to 615) and with CL + 8.00 D (CV = 0.77% p = 0.97;607 ± 44 μm CI 95% 601 to 613)]. An Approach to Assessment to Population of the Brown Shrimp, <i>Farfantepenaeus californiensis</i>(Holmes, 1900), as a Management Fisheries Tool in the Southeastern Gulf of California

The brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis, is the most important shrimp species in the Mexican Pacific coastal fisheries, with annual yields averaging 20,000 metric tons. The Mexican state of Sinaloa has the largest Mexican fleet of shrimp trawlers (736 boats) with annual landings of 7000 tons of brown shrimp on average. The status of the brown shrimp fishery was assessed using commercial catch and effort data of the Sinaloa shrimp trawl fleet over 16 years, from 1995 to 2011. We developed a biomass dynamic Schaefer model and used resampling techniques to analyze the catch-per-unit effort (CPUE) of the trawl brown shrimp fishery in the southeastern Gulf of California,Mexico. To ascertain robustness of our conclusions, two hypotheses were tested: observation and process error. Explicitly accounting for observation errors produced the best model fit to available data than including process errors. We identified several sources of observation error, for example discriminating fishing effort by species, changes in catch ability and misreported catch. The brown shrimp fishery showed symptoms of overfishing, although catch reported in the last fishing season considered in the analyses seems to indicate a rapid recovery of the stock. Finally, we predicted for the 2011-12 fishing season a catch of 9630 tonsof brown shrimp.

Decomposition and Products of Wheat and Rice Straw from a FACE Experiment Under Flooded Conditions

Winter wheat and rice straw produced under ambient and elevated CO2 in a China rice-wheat rotation free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment was mixed with a paddy soil at a rate of 10 g kg-1 (air-dried), and the mixture was incubated under flooded conditions at 25 °C to examine the differences in decomposition as well as the products of crop residues produced under elevated CO2. Results showed that the C/N ratio and the amount of soluble fraction in the amended rice straw grown under elevated CO2 (FR) were 9.8% and 73.1% greater, and the cellulose and lignin were 16.0% and 9.9% lesser than those of the amended rice straw grown under ambient CO2 (AR), respectively. Compared with those of the AR treatment, the CO2-C and CH4-C emissions in the FR treatment for 25 d were increased by 7.9% and 25.0%, respectively; a higher ratio of CH4 to CO2 emissions induced by straw in the FR treatment was also observed. In contrast, in the treatments with winter wheat straw, the CO2-C and CH4-C emissions, the ratio of straw-induced CH4 to CO2 emissions, and the straw composition were not significantly affected by elevated CO2, except for an 8.0% decrease in total N and a 9.7% increase in C/N ratio in the wheat straw grown under elevated CO2. Correlation analysis showed that the net CO2-C and CH4-C emission from straw and the ratio of straw-induced CH4 to CO2 emissions were all exponentially related to the amount of soluble fraction in the amended straw (P < 0.05). These indicated that under flooded conditions, the turnover and CH4 emission from crop straw incorporated into soil were dependent on the effect of elevated CO2 on straw composition, and varied with crop species. Incorporation of rice straw grown under elevated CO2 would stimulate CH4 emission from flooded rice fields, whereas winter wheat straw grown under elevated CO2 had no effect on CH4 emission.

Effect of Aerobic Exercise on Protein Expression in Muscle of Obese Mexican Adolescents: A Proteomic and Bioinformatic Analysis

The beneficial effects of exercise have been recognized for many years yet the molecular mechanisms by which exercise show benefits on health are still elusive. A combination of experimental and bioinformatics approaches can be an invaluable tool to increase the cellular understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the aerobic exercise in obese adolescents. Muscle skeletal proteins were separated by 2D-PAGE and changes in protein expression were revealed by ImageMaster 2D Platinum analysis software. Proteins with expression changes after aerobic exercise were identified by comparison with 2D maps from SWISS-2DPAGE and interactions of proteins were analyzed with STRING and DAVID databases. After aerobic exercise, all participants decreased glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, body mass index and waist circumference. Proteomic differential analysis revealed 10 overexpressed proteins after aerobic training, which correspond to carbonic anhydrase III, beta enolase, creatine kinase, ATP synthase beta subunit, aldolase A, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, triosephosphate isomerase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and adenylate kinase. Exercise increased glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation pathways, which is likely to be regulated by ubiquitin c protein. In conclusion, our analysis suggested that obese adolescents show changes in their body mass index, waist circumference and serum glucose after aerobic exercise through improved protein expression patterns that aid, especially, glucose metabolism and increase the oxidative phosphorylation. The most likely explanation for the observed pattern is that ubiquitin c protein keeps the glycolytic enzymes bound within skeletal muscle, obtaining a non-degradative role in cell signaling.

BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes(T1D)is a complex disease with a higher incidence in Europeans than other *** Colombians Living in Medellin(CLM)is admixed with ancestry contributions from Europeans,Native Americans(NAT)and Africans(AFR).AIM Our aim was to analyze the genetic admixture component at candidate T1D loci in Colombian individuals with the *** Seventy-four ancestry informative markers(AIMs),which tagged 41 T1D candidate loci/genes,were tested by studying a cohort of 200 Northwest Colombia diseased individuals.T1D status was classified by testing for glutamic acid decarboxylase(GAD-65 kDa)and protein tyrosine-like antigen-2 autoantibodies in serum *** loci/genes included HLA,INS,PTPN22,CTLA4,IL2RA,SUMO4,CLEC16A,IFIH1,EFR3B,IL7R,NRP1 and RNASEH1,amongst *** 1,000 genome database was used to analyze data from 94 individuals corresponding to the reference *** the data did not comply with a normal distribution,medians were compared between groups using the Mann-Whitney *** Both T1D patients and individuals from CLM displayed mainly European ancestry(61.58 vs 62.06)followed by Native American(27.34 vs 27.46)and to a lesser extent the AFR ancestry(10.28 vs 10.65)***,compared to CLM,ancestry of T1D patients displayed a decrease of NAT ancestry at gene EFR3B(24.30 vs 37.10)and an increase at genes IFIH1(32.07 vs 14.99)and IL7R(52.18 vs 39.18).Also,for gene NRP1(36.67 vs 0.003),we observed a non-AFR contribution(attributed to NAT).Autoimmune patients(positive for any of two auto-antibodies)displayed lower NAT ancestry than idiopathic patients at the MHC region(20.36 vs 31.88).Also,late onset patients presented with greater AFR ancestry than early onset patients at gene IL7R(19.96 vs 6.17).An association analysis showed that,even after adjusting for admixture,an association exists for at least seven such AIMs,with the strongest findings on chromosomes 5 and 10(gene IL7R,P=5.56×10-6 and gene NRP1,P=8.

Application of Design of Experiments and Simulation to Improve the Deep Drawing Process of Sheet Metal Forming

The objective of this work was the planning, simulation and evaluation of the behavior and interactions of diverse factors in the deep drawing process, in order to prevent defects on formed metal sheet parts. The material used is austenitic stainless steel of 0.4 mm of thickness. Due to the potential high number of experiments, a preliminary selection of cylindrical and hemispherical cup drawing geometries was carried out, as well as a parametric analysis of parts and tools. The influence of the punch and die transition radii, as well as the force of the binder, on the maximum thinning suffered by the material, was studied. The tests were planned by means of CAD/CAE and the design of experiments method. After running the simulation with AutoForm, they were evaluated with FLD, Regression, ANOVA, Six Sigma and Pareto analysis. This sequence allowed us to analyze the influence and sensitivity of several tool and process design parameters and to optimize the process. The results of this investigation have also proven to be useful to simplify and accelerate the design of deep drawing tools.
