Glide symmetry protected higher-order topological insulators from semimetals with butterfly-like nodal lines

Most topological insulators(TIs)discovered today in spinful systems can be transformed from topological semimetals(TSMs)with vanishing bulk gap via introducing the spin-orbit coupling(SOC),which manifests the intrinsic links between the gapped topological insulator phases and the gapless ***,we have discovered a family of TSMs in time-reversal invariant spinless systems,which host butterfly-like nodal-lines(NLs)consisting of a pair of identical concentric intersecting coplanar ellipses(CICE).In this Communication,we unveil the intrinsic link between this exotic class of nodal-line semimetals(NLSMs)and a Z_(4)=2 topological crystalline insulator(TCI),by including substantial *** demonstrate that in three space groups(i.e.,Pbam(No.55),P4/mbm(No.127),and P4_(2)/mbc(No.135)),the TCI supports a fourfold Dirac fermion on the(001)surface protected by two glide symmetries,which originates from the intertwined drumhead surface states of the CICE *** higher order topology is further demonstrated by the emergence of one-dimensional helical hinge states,indicating the discovery of a higher order topological insulator protected by a glide symmetry.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is sensitive to loading and mechanical stress that provokes morphological changes produced by the impact in the occlusal plane. Here, this impact is evaluated in TMJ articular disc and articular cartilage using an in vivo model of unilateral occlusal plane impact and by analysis of serial tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (H-E) or with Masson trichrome technique. Thus, six groups of 5 Wistar rats (200 - 250 g) are subjected to biomechanical dental stimulation by placing unilateral resin occlusal interference, or unilateral tooth wear made by upper left molars artificial mechanical devastation (1 control and 2 experimental groups for each treatment). Each treatment is evaluated two times at 1 and 15 days post-treatment. By H-E staining, control groups show chondrocytes arrangement as several cord cell groups in comparison with the experimental groups, which show an arrangement in one cord cell along of articular disc. However, this yields no significant difference (p < 0.05) in cell number between control and experimental groups. In contrast, in articular cartilage chondrocytes are random distributed along the superficial zone in control groups, while in experimental groups cell-free regions are observed in superficial zone. An image Blue hue analysis for trichrome stain is performed to quantify collagen;this shows a significant collagen decrease (p < 0.05) in almost all experimental groups compared with the controls. A degenerative process biomechanically induced by unilateral occlusal plane modification, causes cell and tissue changes on the TMJ structures that remain the degenerative changes observed in early osteoarthritis.

Colorectal cancer （CRC） is one of the most common neoplasms and an important cause of mortality worldwide （http：//globocan. ***]）. Approximately 35% of the variation in CRC susceptibility is likely due to heritable factors （Lichtenstein et al., 2000}. Genetic variations in the human genome include single nucleotide variants （SNVs）, short insertions and deletions, and larger structural variants resulting in gain or loss of genomic DNA larger than 1 kb, such as copy number variants （CNVs）. Leaving aside the importance of CNVs in sporadic tumor development, these variants can also be present in the germline DNA of healthy individuals from the general population and be considered polymorphic.

Oxidative stress （OS） is a key process in the development of many neurodegenerative diseases, memory disorders, and other pathological processes related to aging. Tibolone （TIB）, a synthetic hormone used as a treatment for menopausal ymptoms, decreases lipoperoxidation levels, prevents memory impairment and learning disability caused by ozone （O3） exposure. However, it is not clear if TIB could prevent the increase in phosphorylation induced by oxidative stress of the microtubule-associated protein Tau. In this study, the effects of TIB at different times of administration on the phosphorylation of Tau, the activation of glycogen synthase kinase-3β （GSK3β）, and the inactivation of Akt and phosphatases PP2A and PTEN induced by O3 exposure were assessed in adult male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into 10 groups： control group （ozone-free air plus vehicle [C]）, control ＋ TIB group （ozone-free air plus TIB 1 mg/kg [C ＋ TIB]）; 7,15, 30, and 60 days of ozone exposure groups [O3] and 7, 15, 30, and 60 days of TIB 1 mg/kg before ozone exposure groups [O3 ＋ TIB]. The effects of O3 exposure and TIB administration were assessed by western blot analysis of total and phosphorylated Tau, GSK3β, Akt, PP2A, and PTEN proteins and oxidative stress marker nitrotyrosine, and superoxide dismutase activity and lipid peroxidation of malondialdehyde by two different spectrophotometric methods （Marklund and TBARS, respectively）. We observed that O3 exposure increases Tau phosphorylation, which is correlated with decreased PP2A and PTEN protein levels, diminished Akt protein levels, and increased GSK3β protein levels in the hippocampus of adult male rats. The effects of O3 exposure were prevented by the long-term treatment （over 15 days） with TIB. Malondialdehyde and nitrotyrosine levels increased from 15 to 60 days of exposure to O3 in comparison to C group, and superoxide dismutase activity decreased. Background: Many studies have provided evidence for an association between obesity, physical inactivity, and western diet as risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC). Few studies directly address the association between type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and the risk of colorectal lesions at specific anatomic locations. Methods: 2663 subjects with a previous history of adenoma (s) and removal of all current adenomas at study entry were followed for a mean time of three years across three different chemoprevention clinical trials. The primary endpoint was colorectal adenoma recurrence and number of lesions during the treatment phase;the secondary endpoints were presence of advanced colorectal neoplasia (CRN) and location of CRN. Using log linear regression, the effect of DM status on the relative risk (RR) of CRN recurrence, advanced CRN, and location of CRN was assessed. Results: DM status was not significantly associated with incidence of colorectal adenomas, incidence of advanced colorectal lesions, or left-sided colorectal neoplastic lesions. Subjects with DM had a marginally increased risk of right-sided (p = 0.06) colorectal adenomas and a significant increased risk of multiple right-sided adenomas (p = 0.03) in the unadjusted model;this association was not significant after adjusting for age and other potential confounders (RR = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.85 - 1.76). Conclusion: We did not observe a statistically significant increased risk in CRN recurrence for overall neoplasia, advanced neoplasia or location of neoplasia in individuals with DM compared to non-DM individuals. However, given the patterns observed in this investigation, future studies with longer follow-up time and longer DM exposure, incorporating objective measurements of type 2 DM might help elucidate the risk of CRN among individuals with DM.

Preventative effects of a probiotic, Lactobacillus salivarius ssp. salivarius, in the TNBS model of rat colitis

AIM： To investigate the intestinal anti-inflammatory effect and mechanism of a probiotic Lactobacillus salivarius ssp. salivariusCECT5713 in the TNBS model of rat colitis. METHODS： Female Wistar rats （180-200 g） were used in this study. A group of rats were administered orally the probiotic L. salivarius ssp. salivarius （5 × 10^8 CFU suspended in 0.5 mL of skimmed milk） daily for 3 wk. Two additional groups were used for reference, a non-colitic and a control colitic without probiotic treatment, which received orally the vehicle used to administer the probiotic. Two weeks after starting the experiment, the rats were rendered colitic by intracolonic administration of 10 mg of TNBS dissolved in 0.25 mL of 500 mL/L ethanol. One week after colitis induction, all animals were killed and colonic damage was evaluated both histologically and biochemically. The biochemical studies performed in colonic homogenates include determination of myeloperoxidase （MPO） activity, glutathione （GSH） content, leukotriene B4 （LTB4） and tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α） levels, as well as inducible nitric oxide synthase （iNOS） expression. In addition, the luminal contents obtained from colonic samples were used for microbiological studies, in order to determine Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria counts. RESULTS： Treatment of colitic rats with L. salivarius ssp. salivarius resulted in amelioration of the inflammatory response in colitic rats, when compared with the corresponding control group without probiotic treatment. This antiinflammatory effect was evidenced macroscopically by a significant reduction in the extent of colonic necrosis and/or inflammation induced by the administration of TNBS/ethanol （2.3±0.4 cm vs3.4±0.3 cm in control group, P〈0.01） and histologically by improvement of the colonic architecture associated with a reduction in the neutrophil infiltrate in comparison with non-treated colitic rats. Construct and Convergent Validity of the OIS-Garcia （Optimist Interactive Style） Scales in a Mexican Population

This is a report of the validation process of two scales that measure the OIS-Garcia (optimist interactive style). An attempt was made to establish construct and convergent validity for these two scales. Towards this end, we relied on the Spanish version of the LOT-R (life orientation test-revised). Participants were 350 relatives of a cancer patient with a mean age of 39.87 years (SD = 14.88) and an age range going from 15 to 79 years. Each of the new versions of the OIS1-Garcia and OIS2-Garcia comprised 10 items. The Chronbach alpha internal consistency coefficients were 0.701 for the OIS1 and 0.633 for the OIS2. The Spearman correlation coefficient among these two tests was 0.438, the correlation among LOT-R and OIS1-Garcia was 0.382, and the correlation among LOT-R and OIS2-Garcia was 0.468. As a result, we were able to partially validate both versions of the OIS-Garcia test. These findings serve as encouragement to develop more culturally sensitive and appropriate measurement instruments for specific cultures or populations.
