Impact of volcanism on the formation and hydrocarbon generation of organic-rich shale in the Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Globally,most organic-rich shales are deposited with volcanic ash *** ash,a source for many sedimentary basins,can affect the sedimentary water environment,alter the primary productivity,and preserve the organic matter(OM)through physical,chemical,and biological *** an increasing number of breakthroughs in shale oil exploration in the Bohai Bay Basin in recent years,less attention has been paid to the crucial role of volcanic impact especially its influence on the OM enrichment and hydrocarbon ***,we studied the petrology,mineralogy,and geochemical characteristics of the organic-rich shale in the upper submember of the fourth member(Es_(4)^(1))and the lower submember of the third member(Es_(3)^(3))of the Shahejie Formation,aiming to better understand the volcanic impact on organic-rich shale *** results show that total organic carbon is higher in the upper shale intervals rich in volcanic ash with enriched light rare earth elements and moderate Eu *** indicates that volcanism promoted OM formation before or after the *** positive correlation between Eu/Eu*and Post-Archean Australian Shale indicates hydrothermal activity before the volcanic *** plane graph of the hydrocarbon-generating intensity(S1+S2)suggests that the heat released by volcanism promoted hydrocarbon ***,the nutrients carried by volcanic ash promoted biological blooms during Es_(4)^(1 )and Es_(3)^(3) deposition,yielding a high primary *** blooms consume large amounts of oxygen and form anoxic environments conducive to the burial and preservation of ***,this study helps to further understand the organic-inorganic interactions caused by typical geological events and provides a guide for the next step of shale oil exploration and development in other lacustrine basins in China.

Chemodiversity of soil dissolved organic matter affected by contrasting microplastics from different types of polymers

Chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter(DOM)is a crucial factor controlling soil nutrient availability,greenhouse gas emissions,and pollutant ***(MPs)are widespread pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems in many ***,the effects of MPs on DOM chemodiversity are not sufficiently understood,particularly under different types of *** UV-Vis spectroscopy,3D fluorescence spectroscopy,and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry,the effects of three prevalent MPs[polyethylene,polystyrene,and polyvinyl chloride(PVC)]on the chemical properties and composition of soil DOM were investigated via a 310-d soil incubation *** results showed that MPs reduced the aromatic and hydrophobic soil DOM components by more than 20%,with PVC MPs having the greatest ***,as MP contents increase,the humification level of soil DOM significantly *** increased DOM molecules with no heteroatom by 8.3%-14.0%,but decreased DOM molecules with nitrogen content by 17.0%-47.8%.This may be because MPs cause positive“priming effect,”resulting in the breakdown of bioavailable components in soil *** is also related to MPs changing microbial richness and diversity and enriching microbial communities involved in lignin compositions *** the presence of MPs,soil DOM chemodiversity depended on soil pH,electrical conductivity,dissolved organic carbon,soil organic matter,bacterial Shannon,and fungal Chao ***,DOM in MP-contaminated soils featured more lipids and less condensed aromatics and proteins/amino sugars,thereby conferring a lower DOM aromaticity and higher lability.

Effect of Mn Content on Microstructure and Cryogenic Mechanical Properties of a 7%Ni Steel

The effect of Mn content on the microstructure and cryogenic mechanical properties of a 7% Ni steel was investigated within the Mn content range from 0.13% to 0.36%. The microstructure of the steel as determined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron backscattering diffraction and X-ray diffraction was presented, and the low-temperature mechanical properties were given. The size of prior austenite grain did not change a lot as Mn content increased. Film-like reversed austenite, having high stability, was found mainly in the specimens with lower Mn content; however, in the specimen with the highest Mn content, the role of Mn was not obvious in stabilizing reversed austenite. Besides, with increasing Mn content, the amount of reversed austenite at grain boundaries gradually decreased. The variable Mn content had a significant effect on cryogenic toughness~ but not apparent on cryogenic tensile strength or yield strength. An excellent combination of cryogenic tensile and impact properties was obtained when Mn content of steel was 0.13%.

Scalable connection-based flow control scheme for application-specific network-on-chip

In this paper, a scalable connection-based flow control scheme is proposed for application-specific network-on-chip （NoC）. The proposed scheme exploits two distinctive characteristics of NoC, namely traffic predictability and abundant wire resource, to achieve significant performance enhancements. First, the burst injection data are regulated into constant data streams and a connection-based method is used to ensure that all links are not overloaded at any time. Consequently, the number of packets in the network is decreased, leading to a reduced congestion probability and improved communication performance. Second, a simple architecture of the central controller is proposed to guarantee that the proposed scheme has small area overhead and is scalable. Simulation results show that compared with traditional switch-to-switch （STS） flow control scheme and pre-allocation based flow control schemes, the proposed scheme greatly increases the throughput and cuts down the average latency with reasonable area and energy overhead.

The influence of Nb content on the microstructure and cryogenic mechanical properties of a 7%Ni steel was investigated within the Nb content range from 0 to 0.05%. The microstructure was characterized by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the low-temperature mechanical property tests were conducted. The Nb addition can effectively refine the prior austenite grains and microstructure of the steel. Fine niobium precipitates with a diameter of about 10-50 nm were observed. They tend to be spherical and locate mainly in the vicinity of grain boundaries. Although there are considerable amounts of reversed austenite forming at grain boundaries in the specimen containing the highest Nb content, no Nb element was detected in such reversed austenite, which implies that Nb element did not affect the formation of the reversed austenite directly. Mechanical test results suggest that the strength of the 7%Ni steel is not simply in relation to the prior austenite grain size, but also depends on the amount of reversed austenite. On the other hand, the grain refinement, enhanced with increasing Nb content, has a good effect on cryogenic toughness.

Current development of the second generation of mTOR inhibitors as anticancer agents

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a serine/threonine protein kinase, acts as a "master switch" for cellular anabolic and catabolic processes, regulating the rate of cell growth and proliferation. Dysregulation of the mTOR signaling pathway occurs frequently in a variety of human tumors, and thus, mTOR has emerged as an important target for the design of anticancer agents. mTOR is found in two distinct multiprotein complexes within cells, mTORC1 and mTORC2. These two complexes consist of unique mTOR-interacting proteins and are regulated by different mechanisms. Enormous advances have been made in the development of drugs known as mTOR inhibitors. Rapamycin, the first defined inhibitor of mTOR, showed effectiveness as an anticancer agent in various preclinical models. Rapamycin analogues (rapalogs) with better pharmacologic properties have been developed. However, the clinical success of rapalogs has been limited to a few types of cancer. The discovery that mTORC2 directly phosphorylates Akt, an important survival kinase, adds new insight into the role of mTORC2 in cancer. This novel finding prompted efforts to develop the second generation of mTOR inhibitors that are able to target both mTORC1 and mTORC2. Here, we review the recent advances in the mTOR field and focus specifically on the current development of the second generation of mTOR inhibitors as anticancer agents.

Injury-induced rapid activation of MAPK signaling in dechorionated eggs and larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori

Previous study showed that diapause in Bombyx mori eggs can be ter- minated by dechorionation and that activation in the mitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK）/extracellular signal-regulated kinase （ERK） in dechorionated cultured eggs is involved in diapause termination. In the present study, the possible mechanism underlying activation of ERK upon dechorionation was further investigated. Results showed that me- chanical injury of diapause eggs without medium incubation also resulted in rapid increase in the phospho-ERK levels and that injury increased the phospho-ERK levels at different stages of both diapause eggs and eggs in which diapause initiation was prevented by HC1. Effects of anaerobiosis on dechorionation-stimulated phospho-ERK levels showed that the mechanical injury itself but not the dramatic increase in oxygen uptake upon injury is in- volved in a rapid activation of ERK. Chemical anaerobiosis on dechorionation-stimulated phospho-ERK levels and the in vivo effect of anaerobiosis showed that the supply of oxygen also plays a role in ERK signaling. In addition, injury induced the phosphory- lation of c-jun N-terminal kinases （JNKs） and p38 kinase, components of two parallel MAPK pathways. A kinase assay showed a dramatic increase in .INK kinase activity in egg lysates upon injury. When newly hatched first instar larvae were injured, an increase in the phospho-ERK levels similar to that in dechorionated eggs was observed. From the results, we hypothesize that the injury-induced rapid activation of MAPK signaling, which serves as a natural signal for embryonic development, is related to diapause termination in dechorionated eggs.

Targeted therapy: resistance and re-sensitization

The last two decades have witnessed a paradigm shift from cytotoxic drugs to targeted therapy in medical oncol?ogy and pharmaceutical innovation. Inspired by breakthroughs in molecular and cellular biology, a number of novel synthesized chemical compounds and recombinant antibodies have been developed to selectively target oncogenic signaling pathways in a broad array of tumor types. Although targeted therapeutic agents show impressive clinical eicacy and minimized adverse efects compared with traditional treatments, the challenging drug?resistant issue has also emerged to limit their beneits to cancer patients. In this regard, we aim to improve targeted therapy by present?ing a systematic framework regarding the drug resistance mechanisms and alternative approaches to re?sensitize cancer cells/tissues therapeutically.
