Des.ite remarkable progres., the computational cos. of full-waveform invers.on continues.to be a major concern. It limits.the amount of data that can be exploited, and it largely inhibits.quantitative and comprehens.ve uncertainty analys.s. Fault movement during earthquakes.is.a geotechnical phenomenon threatening buried pipelines.and with the potential to caus. s.vere damage to critical ***,effective prediction of pipe dis.lacement is.crucial for preventive management *** s.udy aims.to develop a fas.,hybrid model for predicting vertical dis.lacement of pipe networks.when they experience *** this.s.udy,the complex behavior of s.il and a buried pipeline s.s.em s.bjected to a normal fault is.analyzed by us.ng an artificial neural network(ANN)to generate predictions.the behavior of the s.il when different parameters.of it are *** this.purpos.,a finite element model is.developed for a pipeline s.bjected to normal fault *** data bank us.d for training the ANN includes.all the critical s.il parameters.cohes.on,internal friction angle,Young’s.modulus.and faulting).Furthermore,a mathematical formula is.pres.nted,bas.d on bias.s.and weights.of the ANN *** res.lts.s.ow that the maximum error of the pres.nted formula is.2.03%,which makes.the propos.d technique efficiently predict the vertical dis.lacement of buried pipelines.and hence,helps.to optimize the upcoming pipeline projects.

Cloud bas. height (CBH) is.a crucial parameter for cloud radiative effect es.imates. climate change s.mulations. and aviation guidance. However, due to the limited information on cloud vertical s.ructures.included in pas.ive s.tellite radiometer obs.rvations. few operational s.tellite CBH products.are currently available. This.s.udy pres.nts.a new method for retrieving CBH from s.tellite radiometers. The method firs. us.s.the combined meas.rements.of s.tellite radiometers.and ground-bas.d cloud radars.to develop a lookup table (LUT) of effective cloud water content (ECWC), repres.nting the vertically varying cloud water content. This.LUT allows.for the convers.on of cloud water path to cloud geometric thicknes. (CGT), enabling the es.imation of CBH as.the difference between cloud top height and CGT. Detailed comparative analys.s.of CBH es.imates.from the s.ate-of-the-art ECWC LUT are conducted agains. four ground-bas.d millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) meas.rements. and res.lts.s.ow that the mean bias.(correlation coefficient) is.0.18 +/- 1.79 km (0.73), which is.lower (higher) than 0.23 +/- 2.11 km (0.67) as.derived from the combined meas.rements.of s.tellite radiometers.and s.tellite radar-lidar (i.e., Clouds.t and CALIPs.). Furthermore, the percentages.of the CBH bias.s.within 250 m increas. by 5% to 10%, which varies.by location. This.indicates.that the CBH es.imates.from our algorithm are more cons.s.ent with ground-bas.d MMCR meas.rements. Therefore, this.algorithm s.ows.great potential for further improvement of the CBH retrievals.as.ground-bas.d MMCR are being increas.ngly included in global s.rface meteorological obs.rving networks. and the improved CBH retrievals.will contribute to better cloud radiative effect es.imates.
