Wheat is the secon. most importan. cereal in.Ken.a. However, production.is severely con.train.d by both abiotic an. biotic stresses. Of the biotic stresses a devastatin. pest (Russian.wheat aphid (RWA)) an. a serious disease (stem rust race TTKS (“Ug99”)) are curren.ly the biggest problem for wheat producers in.Ken.a. Severe in.estation. by RWA may result in.yield losses of up to 90% while “Ug99” in.ected fields may suffer 100% crop loss. The two pests combin.d are seriously affectin. wheat farmers’ in.omes because of the heavy relian.e on.pesticides that in.rease the cost of production. This study attempted to develop an. characterize wheat lin.s that are resistan. to both RWA an. “Ug99” by pyramidin. two major resistan.e gen.s. Three wheat varieties: “Kwale”, a Ken.an.high yieldin. variety but susceptible to both RWA an. “Ug99”;“Cook”, an.Australian.variety carryin. stem rust resistan.e gen. Sr36 con.errin. immun.ty to “Ug99”;an. “KRWA9”, a Ken.an.lin. with resistan.e to RWA but of poor agron.mic attributes were used. A double cross F1 (DC F1) was obtain.d by crossin. the F1 of “Kwale × Cook” an. the F1 of “Kwale × KRWA9”. The DC F1 population.was subjected to sequen.ial screen.n. for both RWA an. “Ug99” resistan.e. Survivin. DC F1 progen.es were left to self pollin.te to obtain.the F2 of the double cross (DC F2). The DC F2 progen.es were sequen.ially screen.d again.t RWA an. “Ug99” to yield a population.that was resistan. to both RWA an. “Ug99”. Gen.typin. of the DC F2:3 families were con.ucted to select homozygous resistan. plan.s. Data in.icated that the RWA an. “Ug99” resistan.e gen.s were successfully pyramided. Though races with virulen.e for Sr36 have been.reported, the gen. provides immun.ty to race “Ug99” an. can.still be effectively used as a compon.n. for “Ug99” resistan.e breedin. together with other Sr gen.s.

The presen. study systematically characterised oxygen.glucose-deprivation.(OGD) in.primary rat cortical n.uron.s to establish a reproducible model with compon.n.s of both cell-death en.poin.s. OGD in.uced a time-depen.en. reduction.in.cell viability, with 80% cell death occurrin. 24 h after 3 h exposure to 0% O2 an. 0.5 mM glucose. Backgroun.: Stroke patien.s form an.in.egral part of patien.s admitted in.o the in.en.ive care un.t (ICU);an. may n.ed airway main.en.n.e, supplemen.al oxygen.an. even.en.otracheal in.ubation.for mechan.cal ven.ilation. Method: In.this retrospective study, the medical records an. radiological in.estigation. of the patien.s were assessed. Also, their socio-demographics, an. clin.cal diagn.sis an. backgroun. co-morbidities were n.ted. The radiological diagn.sis post CT was used to determin. the type of stroke for those complian.;while clin.cal assessmen. alon. was used to determin. the diagn.sis in.those who did n.t do CT. They were also classified in.o 2 groups: those requirin. mechan.cal ven.ilation.(for ICU care) an. those without the n.ed for mechan.cal ven.ilation.(for high depen.en.y Un.t (HDU) care). The even.ual clin.cal outcome was n.ted. Result: A total of eighty-eight cases, 67% (n.= 59) were males an. 33% (n.= 29) females. 89.8% (n.= 79) had hyperten.ion. 3.4% (n.= 3) had diabetes while 6.8% (n.= 6) had both hyperten.ion.an. diabetes. Of the hyperten.ives, 36.7% (n.= 29) had hemorrhagic stroke an. 66.3% (n.= 50) had ischaemic stroke. 53.3% (n.= 46) patien.s had High depen.en.y Un.t (HDU care while 47.7% (n.= 42) were mechan.cally ven.ilated. Of the n.mber in.HDU, 51.5% (n.= 17) were haemorrhagic, while 52.7% (n.= 29) were ischaemic. Clin.cal diagn.sis of ischemic stroke was don. in.55 (62.5%) an. hemorrhagic stroke in.37.5% (n.= 33). Of the lot, on.y 19.3% (n.= 17) of them did CT an. 80.7% (n.= 71) did n.t have CT don.. n.n. did MRI. Late presen.ation.(beyon. 24 hrs) was a common.feature for most of the patien.s, for whom immediate cardio-respiratory support became n.cessary. Overall mortality rate was 62.5% (n.= 55). 39.1% (n.= 18) of the HDU (46) patien.s died, while 88.1% (n.= 37) of the ven.ilated (42) patien.s died. 56.6% (n.= 26) were discharged from the HDU an. 4.3% (n.= 2) referred to an.ther facility.
