Context-dependent effects of cold stress on behavioral, physiological,and life-history traits of the red flour beetle

Animals are exposed in nature to a variety ofstressors.While stress is generally harmful,mild stress can also be beneficial and contribute to reproduction and survival.We studied the effect of five cold shock events versus a single cold shock and a control group, representing three levels of stress (harsh,mild,and no stress),on behavioral,physiological, and life-history traits of the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum,Herbst 1797).Beetles exposed to harsh cold stress were less active than a control group:they moved less and failed more frequently to detect a food patch.Their probability to mate was also lower. Beetle pairs exposed to harsh cold stress frequently failed to reproduce at all,and if reproducing,females laid fewer eggs,which were,as larvae in mid-development,smaller than those in the control group.However,harsh cold stress led to improved female starvation tolerance,probably due to enhanced lipid accumulation.Harsh cold shock also improved tolerance to an additional cold shock compared to the control.Finally,a single cold shock event negatively affected fewer measured response variables than the harsh cold stress, but also enhanced neither starvation tolerance nor tolerance to an additional cold shock. The consequences of a harsher cold stress are thus not solely detrimental but might even enhance survival under stressful conditions.Under benign conditions,nevertheless,harsh stress impedes beetle performance.The harsh stress probably shifted the balance point of the survival-reproduction trade-off,a shift that did not take place following exposure to mild stress.

The biodiversity of the mycobiome,an important component of the oral microbial community,and the roles of fungal–bacterial and fungal–immune system interactions in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) remain largely uncharacterized.In this study,we sequenced the salivary mycobiome and bacteriome associated with OLP.First,we described the dysbiosis of the microbiome in OLP patients,which exhibits lower levels of fungi and higher levels of bacteria.Significantly higher abundances of the fungi Candida and Aspergillus in patients with reticular OLP and of Alternaria and Sclerotiniaceae_unidentified in patients with erosive OLP were observed compared to the healthy controls.Aspergillus was identified as an “OLP-associated” fungus because of its detection at a higher frequency than in the healthy controls.Second,the co-occurrence patterns of the salivary mycobiome–bacteriome demonstrated negative associations between specific fungal and bacterial taxa identified in the healthy controls,which diminished in the reticular OLP group and even became positive in the erosive OLP group.Moreover,the oral cavities of OLP patients were colonized by dysbiotic oral flora with lower ecological network complexity and decreased fungal–Firmicutes and increased fungal–Bacteroidetes sub-networks.Third,several keystone fungal genera (Bovista,Erysiphe,Psathyrella,etc.) demonstrated significant correlations with clinical scores and IL-17 levels.Thus,we established that fungal dysbiosis is associated with the aggravation of OLP.Fungal dysbiosis could alter the salivary bacteriome or may reflect a direct effect of host immunity,which participates in OLP pathogenesis.

Predicting Complex Word Emotions and Topics through a Hierarchical Bayesian Network

In this paper,we provide a Word Emotion Topic(WET) model to predict the complex word emotion information from text,and discover the distribution of emotions among different topics.A complex emotion is defined as the combination of one or more singular emotions from following 8 basic emotion categories:joy,love,expectation,surprise,anxiety,sorrow,anger and hate.We use a hierarchical Bayesian network to model the emotions and topics in the text.Both the complex emotions and topics are drawn from raw texts,without considering any complicated language features.Our experiment shows promising results of word emotion prediction,which outperforms the traditional parsing methods such as the Hidden Markov Model and the Conditional Random Fields(CRFs) on raw text.We also explore the topic distribution by examining the emotion topic variation in an emotion topic diagram.

照护作为一项亲密劳动,包含大量情感劳动以及身体工作。本文基于养老院的民族志研究,考察了围绕性/别身体的照护实践、情感经验和日常互动.一方面,身体的亲密接触往往造成强烈的羞耻和肮脏感,而护理员们通过多重划界策略在一定程度上实现了“性/别身体”与“工作身体”的分离,自发建立起照护的专业脚本和工作伦理另一方面,专业性的界线也可能在长期的互动中遭遇挑战和瓦解,这一过程伴随着厌恶、惊奇、愉快等复杂流变的情感,性/别与衰老、失能身体之间的复杂交织也形塑了护理员和老年住民之间的另类亲密性,有助于我们在当前主流的性与性别规范性论述之外拓展新的理解.

作为东方文化中最具代表性的两大体系,中国和日本在传统糕饼印模图案中展现出共同的文化基因和差异化的价值取向、工艺风格、审美趣味和表意方式。受历史、地缘和社会因素影响,中国人崇尚的集美、喜乐、和谐、永恒与日本人钟情的幽玄、物哀、侘寂、意气在传统图案中形成观照,呈现出中日传统糕点文化的特质与面貌,共同诠释了东方文化多元、互鉴、共生的一面。本文对中国清末至民国时期及日本明治至昭和时代部分具有代表性的糕饼印模进行样本比较研究,分析同时期两国糕饼图案题材、形制、工艺、审美、语义的异同,从中窥探近现代东方美学的流变和发展,思考东方传统糕饼图案在全球文化中的价值。
