during the last ice age, CO2 concentration （[CO2]） was 180-200 umol/mol compared with the modern value of 380 umol/mol, and global temperatures were -8 ℃ cooler. Relatively little is known about the responses of C3 and C4 species to longterm exposure to glacial conditions. Here Abutilon theophrasti Medik. （C3） and Amaranthus retroflexus L. （C4） were grown at 200 umol/mol CO2 with current （30/24℃） and glacial （22/16℃） temperatures for 22d. Overall, the C4 species exhibited a large growth advantage over the C3 species at low [CO2]. However, this advantage was reduced at low temperature, where the C4 species produced 5x the total mass of the C3 species versus 14x at the high temperature. This difference was due to a reduction in C4 growth at low temperature, since the C3 species exhibited similar growth between temperatures. Physiological differences between temperatures were not detected for either species, although photorespiration/net photosynthesis was reduced in the C3 species grown at low temperature, suggesting evidence of improved carbon balance at this treatment. This system suggests that C4 species had a growth advantage over C3 species during low [CO2] of the last ice age, although concurrent reductions in temperatures may have reduced this advantage.

AIM To evaluate the effect of sitagliptin vs placebo on histologic and non-histologic parameters of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).METHOdS Twelve patients with biopsy-proven NASH were randomized to sitagliptin(100 mg daily)(n=6)or placebo(n=6)for 24 *** primary outcome was improvement in liver fibrosis after 24 *** outcomes included evaluation of changes in NAFLd activity score(NAS),individual components of NAS(hepatocyte ballooning,lobular inflammation,and steatosis),glycemic control and insulin resistance[including measurements of glycated hemoglobin(Hb A1C)and adipocytokines],lipid profile including free fatty acids,adipose distribution measured using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),and thrombosis markers(platelet aggregation and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 levels).We also sought to determine the correlation between changes in hepatic fat fraction(%)[as measured using the Iterative decomposition of water and fat with Echo Asymmetry and Least-squares estimation(IdEAL)MRI technique]and changes in hepatic steatosis on liver *** Sitagliptin was not significantly better than placebo at reducing liver fibrosis score as measured on liver biopsy(mean difference between sitagliptin and placebo arms,0.40,P=0.82).There were no significant improvements evident with the use of sitagliptin vs placebo for the secondary histologic outcomes of NAS total score as well as for the individual components of *** to baseline,those patients who received sitagliptin demonstrated improved Hb A1C(6.7%±0.4%vs 7.9%±1.0%,P=0.02),and trended towards improved adiponectin levels(4.7±3.5μg/m L vs 3.9±2.7μg/m L,P=0.06)and triglyceride levels(1.26±0.43 mmol/L vs 2.80±1.64 mmol/L,P=0.08).However,when compared with placebo,sitagliptin did not cause a statistically significant improvement in Hb A1C(mean difference,-0.7%,P=0.19)nor triglyceride levels(mean difference-1.10mmol/L,P=0.19)but did trend towards improved adiponectin levels only(mean difference,0.60μg/

Extreme Hyperferritinemia in a Filipino Male Patient with Adult Onset Still’s disease: A Case Report

Background: Elevated serum ferritin is more commonly due to reactive causes such as infection, hepatic disorders, rheumatologic conditions, and malignancy than true iron overload. Extreme hyperferritinemia (>10,000 ng/mL), on the other hand, should prompt consideration of rare conditions such as adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSd) or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. This paper aims to present the case of the highest reported extreme hyperferritinemia (actual level 256,000 ng/mL) in a patient eventually diagnosed with adult onset Still’s disease (AOSd). Case Presentation: A 55-year-old male, Filipino, was admitted due to acute onset fever and shortness of breath. He was initially assessed to have community-acquired pneumonia and a suspect for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVId-19), hence inflammatory markers were requested. Ferritin was notably elevated at 44,255 ng/mL. He eventually tested negative for COVId-19 RT-PCR. He was investigated for other causes of markedly elevated ferritin levels. His complete blood count (CBC) only showed leukocytosis with no peripheral blasts, iron level and liver function tests were normal, HIV immunoassay was negative, ANA was 1:80 speckled with normal complement level, rheumatoid factor negative, and positron emission tomography (PET) scan revealed presence of lymphadenopathies and did not show solid tumors. He was treated for urinary tract infection and pneumonia but still had intermittent fever and increasing ferritin trend, with the highest documented level at 256,000 ng/mL. Fulfilling the Yamaguchi criteria, he was managed as a case of severe AOSd and received tocilizumab. He had lysis of fever and decreasing trend of ferritin levels thereafter, with ferritin level of 34,184 ng/mL three weeks after tocilizumab infusion. He was discharged and improved with prednisone and methotrexate as home medications. Conclusion: To our knowledge, the highest level of extreme hyperferritinemia recorded in literature as of 2016 is 143,931 ng/mL,

Introductory Statistics is a course taught in various community colleges, state colleges, and universities. Implementation of projects in this course has been shown to enhance students’ learning;in addition to increasing the ability of educators to assess students’ learning outcomes in detail. These projects are often inquiry-based and require a balance between flexibility and efficiency. Maintaining balance has provided the students’ opportunities through exploration and learner autonomy. In exploration, a student seeks new methods and options through experimenting. In this paper, we will discuss the benefits of exploration required by projects given in an introductory statistics course. The details of five different projects discussed in this paper—illustrate the practical influence that they could have on higher statistics courses.

The seasonal variation and quality status of groundwater systems of Kamiti-Marengeta sub-catchment were evaluated through analysis of boreholes and 17 shallow wells water samples in May 2016 and September 2017. Consequently, the results were compared against the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water purposes, and its suitability for drinking was established. The results showed that turbidity, calcium, potassium, iron, and fluoride levels in some of the boreholes and pH, calcium, sodium, and iron levels in some shallow wells exceeded the KEBS and WHO standards for drinking water quality. Turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and total hardness significantly varied across the regions of the study, and one-way ANOVA (P dicated a significant difference in the mean concentration of electrical conductivity, turbidity, total hardness, calcium, and iron in boreholes and in all parameters in shallow wells except for magnesium during the two seasons. The findings of this study provide baseline information on the quality of the groundwater systems of the area. It also contributes to knowledge on seasonal variation of groundwater quality of volcanic aquifers like the Nairobi Aquifer System (NAS) which is important for water quality monitoring.

Aggregates are the biggest contributor to concrete volume and are a crucial parameter in dictating its mechanical *** such,a detailed experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of sand-toaggregate volume ratio(s/a)on the mechanical properties of concrete utilizing both destructive and non-destructive testing(employing UPV(ultrasonic pulse velocity)measurements).For investigation,standard cylindrical concrete samples were made with different s/a(0.36,0.40,0.44,0.48,0.52,and 0.56),cement content(340 and 450 kg/m^(3)),water-to-cement ratio(0.45 and 0.50),and maximum aggregate size(12 and 19 mm).The effect of these design parameters on the 7,14,and 28 d compressive strength,tensile strength,elastic modulus,and UPV of concrete were *** careful analysis demonstrates that aggregate proportions and size need to be optimized for formulating mix designs;optimum ratios of s/a were found to be 0.40 and 0.44 for the maximum aggregate size of 12 and 19 mm,respectively,irrespective of the W/C(water-to-cement)and cement content.

Chronic pancreatitis(CP)is a major risk factor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PdAC).How CP promotes pancreatic oncogenesis remains unclear.A characteristic feature of PdAC is its prominent desmoplasia in the tumor microenvironment,composed of activated fibroblasts and *** can be characterized as M1 or M2,with tumor-inhibiting or-promoting functions,*** reported that Gremlin 1(GREM1),a key pro-fibrogenic factor,is upregulated in the stroma of *** current study aimed to investigate the expression of GREM1 and correlation between GREM1 and macrophages within the pancreas during chronic inflammation and the development of *** mRNA in situ hybridization,we detected GREM1 mRNA expression withinα-smooth muscle actin(SMA)-positive fibroblasts of the pancreatic *** designated FibroblastsGrem1+marginally increased from CP to pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia(PanIN)and *** PdAC,FibroblastsGrem1+increased with higher pathological tumor stages and in a majority of PdAC subtypes ***,FibroblastsGrem1+positively correlated with total macrophages(MacCd68+)and M2 macrophages(M2Cd163+)in *** begin exploring potential molecular links between FibroblastsGrem1+and macrophages in PdAC,we examined the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF),an endogenous counteracting molecule of GREM1 and an M1 macrophage promoting *** IHC staining of MIF,we found MIF to be expressed by tumor cells,positively correlated with GREM1;by IHC co-staining,we found MIF to be negatively correlated with M2Cd163+*** findings suggest that GREM1 expression by activated fibroblasts may promote PdAC development,and GREM1/MIF may play an important role in macrophage phenotype.

Animals are exposed in nature to a variety *** stress is generally harmful,mild stress can also be beneficial and contribute to reproduction and *** studied the effect of five cold shock events versus a single cold shock and a control group, representing three levels of stress (harsh,mild,and no stress),on behavioral,physiological, and life-history traits of the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum,Herbst 1797).Beetles exposed to harsh cold stress were less active than a control group:they moved less and failed more frequently to detect a food *** probability to mate was also lower. Beetle pairs exposed to harsh cold stress frequently failed to reproduce at all,and if reproducing,females laid fewer eggs,which were,as larvae in mid-development,smaller than those in the control ***,harsh cold stress led to improved female starvation tolerance,probably due to enhanced lipid *** cold shock also improved tolerance to an additional cold shock compared to the ***,a single cold shock event negatively affected fewer measured response variables than the harsh cold stress, but also enhanced neither starvation tolerance nor tolerance to an additional cold shock. The consequences of a harsher cold stress are thus not solely detrimental but might even enhance survival under stressful *** benign conditions,nevertheless,harsh stress impedes beetle *** harsh stress probably shifted the balance point of the survival-reproduction trade-off,a shift that did not take place following exposure to mild stress.
