Placental Malaria and Pre-Eclampsia from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos Nigeria

Objective: To determine the relationship between placental malaria infection and pre-eclampsia in a holo-endemic zone. Design: Prospective case-control study. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty seven (127) pregnant women with a diagnosis of pre-eclampsia in labour or having caesarean section served as cases while controls were 127 normotensive parturient women. They were recruited from the maternity unit of Ifako Ijaiye and Isolo General Hospitals, Lagos that served as secondary care centers. At delivery, either spontaneous vaginal delivery or by caesarean section, a 2.0 cm × 2.0 cm placenta tissue was cut with scalpel and fixed in 10% formaldehyde in a specimen bottle and sent to the pathologist. Following this, 2.5 mls of Cord blood and 2.5 mls of the maternal venous blood were taken into separate EDTA bottles properly labeled at delivery, samples were sent to the haematology laboratory immediately for peripheral thick film smear for malaria parasite. Results were obtained from the laboratory and together with data from the case files, they were entered into SPSS version 16 for analysis. Independent Student t-test was used for significance for continuous variables while Chi-square was used for qualitative data. The significance was set at 0.05. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the cases and controls regarding the maternal age, number of pregnancies, p p > 0.05. There was statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the diagnosis of placental malaria as well as past history of alcohol intake and occupation, p Conclusion: Placental malaria infection was more common in patients with preeclampsia than their matched normotensive patients in our environment. At the same time, chronic malaria was found to be an independent risk factor for preeclampsia. More concerted efforts by all stake holders should be geared towards primary prevention together with early diagnosis and treatment of malaria especially

Placenta Growth Factor and Soluble Fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase 1 in Preeclampsia and Normotensive Pregnant Nigerian Women

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is still one of the leading causes of maternal/perinatal morbidity/mortality in Nigeria. Imbalance between placenta growth factor (PLGF) and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt1) has been reportedly present both before and after the manifestation of PE;however, Nigerian data regarding these angiogenesis-related substances are lacking. We here attempted to determine the maternal serum level of PLGF and sFlt1 and sFlt1/PLGF ratio in PE vs. non-PE women in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was made on 75 women with PE and 75 age-gestational-age matched women without PE, as case and control, respectively. Levels of sFlt-1, PIGF and the sFlt-1: PIGF ratio was compared between the two. Results: Serum levels of Flt-1 and sFlt1/PIGF ratio were significantly higher in PE patients (6581.86 ± 865.75, and 146.42 ± 92.43) than in the normotensive control (4584.52 ± 1479.6 and 11.60 ± 6.42). PIGF was significantly lower in PE patients (70.14 ± 51.03) than the normotensives (494.06 ± 475.8). There were positive and negative correlations between the sFlt-1 and PLGF respectively and mean arterial blood pressure. Conclusion: Serum sFlt-1, sFlt1/PIGF ratio was significantly higher and PIGF levels

Background: Young people, especially those in tertiary institutions are vulnerable to unplanned and unprotected sexual intercourse which predisposes them to unintended pregnancies and subsequently unsafe abortions. One of the key interventions for reduction of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions is effective use of emergency contraceptives. Objectives: To assess the sexuality, perception, attitude towards and determinants of usage of emergency contraception among female undergraduates in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: Cross-sectional survey conducted in June 2016 among 805 female students of the Lagos State University. Data were collected through structured self-administered questionnaire by obtaining information on demography, sexual and contraceptive history, perception, attitude towards and use of emergency contraceptives. Utilization of Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Technologies by Agripreneurs in Ondo State, Nigeria

The research investigated the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technol-ogies among agricultural entrepreneurs in Ondo state, Nigeria. A purposive sample of 120 participants involved in agriculture was selected for the study. Socioeconomic characteristics analysis revealed that the mean age of the re-spondents was 48.3 years. A majority (77%) of the respondents were male, and approximately 68% were married. Regarding education, 32.5% had completed secondary education, while 32.5% had tertiary education. The av-erage annual income was 1,166,800 naira, with a significant proportion (71.7%) identifying as Christians. The study found a significant association between respondents’ awareness levels and their adoption of AI-enabled technologies (χ2 = 7.714, p = 0.005). Based on these findings, it is recom-mended that extension officers receive training in the latest agricultural technologies, including those enabled by AI. Furthermore, the study suggests the introduction of easily accessible and user-friendly AI technologies to farmers to enhance their productivity and income with minimal or no cost implications.

A submergible robot model has been presented, and for 3D printing measures, their parts have been modified enough. It has been shown in our design that using printable connectors—a few engines and weight arrangements can be carried out, permitting distinctive moving prospects. After presenting our configuration and delineating a bunch of potential structures, a helpful model dependent on open-source equipment and programming arrangements has been presented conditionally. The model can be effectively tried in a few makes-a plunge streams and lakes throughout the planet. The unwavering quality of the printed models can be strained distinctly in generally shallow waters. Nonetheless, we accept that their accessibility will inspire the overall population to construct and test submerged robots, subsequently accelerating the improvement of imaginative arrangements and applications.

目的评估中国中度至重度鼻唇沟皱褶(NLF)患者在真实的临床实践环境中接受HYC-24/HYC-24+治疗后的结局满意度。方法本研究是一项前瞻性、观察性、多中心、真实世界队列研究。纳入2018年8月至2020年8月于北京丽都医疗美容医院、杭州颜术悦容医疗美容诊所和广州粤秀整形外科医院接受HYC-24/HYC-24+治疗,并随访长达1年的中国患者,年龄18至65岁、患有中度至重度NLF,且在研究入组前6个月内未接受过NLF的美容治疗。在第1、6、9和12个月进行治疗后研究访视,仅第6个月和第9个月为必须进行的访视。患者报告结局的主要终点包括:FACE-Q结局满意度问卷总分(评分范围为0~100分,分数越高表示结局越好,患者越满意),FACE-Q皱纹评估-NLF问卷总分较基线的平均变化(评分范围为0~100分,评分越高表示患者在过去1周内越不受到NLF的困扰),以及在FACE-Q患者感知年龄视觉模拟评分法(VAS)上报告比实际年龄看起来更年轻的患者比例。研究者评估终点包括整体美容效果改善量表(GAIS)评分≥1分的患者比例,以及使用鼻唇沟皱褶严重程度量表(NLFSS)评估NLF严重程度改善≥1分的患者比例。使用SAS 9.4软件进行统计分析,计量资料采用±s表示,计数资料用例数(%)表示,不同访视时间与基线的比较,采用Wilcoxon符号秩检验。结果共52例患者入组并接受治疗,其中,7例因访视时间超出访视评估窗而未被纳入第6个月有效性的分析数据集,仅9例患者完成了第12个月的访视。所有患者均为中国籍女性,年龄26~62岁,平均为40.7岁。FACE-Q结局满意度问卷总分第6个月时为(68.76±21.03)分(38~100分),第9个月时为(65.44±18.24)分(24~100分),表明患者对治疗的满意度较高。FACE-Q皱纹评估-NLF问卷总分基线时为(42.4±15.1)分(10~69分),第6个月时为(76.9±20.6)分(36~100分),第9个月时为(74.2±16.7)分(36~100分),均较基线得分明显升高(P均<0.01),第6个月和第9个月时问卷总分较基线的平均变化分别为34.9分和31.8分,表明治疗后NLF造成的困扰较轻。FACE-Q患者感知年龄VAS报告认为比实际年龄看起来更年轻的患者比例从基线时的28.9%(15/52)分别增加到第6个月的77.8%(35/45)和第9个月的73.1%(38/52),与基线相比,差异均有统计学意义(P<0.01)。在每次基线后访视时,所有患者的GAIS量表得分改善均≥1分,表明研究者认为患者NLF外观均有所改善。在NLFSS评价方面,分别有97.8%(44/45)和82.7%(43/52)的患者在第6个月和第9个月的NLFSS改善程度≥1分。试验期间无不良事件报告。结论在真实临床实践环境中,对中国患者施用HYC-24/HYC-24+后,使用经验证的问卷调查显示,患者对结局表示满意。患者还报告称治疗后看起来比实际年龄年轻,并且受NLF的困扰较少。临床医生报告结局与患者报告结局一致,表明NLF有所改善。

Design and Analysis of Power and Transmission System of Downhole Pure Electric Command Vehicle

Electric vehicles use electric motors, which turn electrical energy into mechanical energy. As electric motors are conventionally used in all the industry, it is an established development site. It’s a mature technology with ideal power and torque curves for vehicular operation. Conventional vehicles use oil and gas as fuel or energy storage. Although they also have an excellent economic impact, the continuous use of oil and gas threatened the world’s reservation of total oil and gas. Also, they emit carbon dioxide and some toxic ingredients through the vehicle’s tailpipe, which causes the greenhouse effect and seriously impacts the environment. So, as an alternative, electric car refers to a green technology of decarbonization with zero emission of greenhouse gases through the tailpipe. So, they can remove the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and solve the world’s remaining non-renewable energy storage problem. Pure electric vehicles (PEV) can be applied in all spheres, but their special implementation can only be seen in downhole operations. They are used for low noise and less pollution in the downhole process. In this study, the basic structure of the pure electric command vehicle is studied, the main components of the command vehicle power system, namely the selection of the drive motor and the power battery, are analyzed, and the main parameters of the drive motor and the power battery are designed and calculated. The checking calculation results show that the power and transmission system developed in this paper meets the design requirements, and the design scheme is feasible and reasonable.
