Gesta.iona. dia.etes mellitus ha. been identified a. a.ma.or complica.ion of pregnancies and has remained a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, as well as maternal morbidity. Lipid abnormalities significantly contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other morbidities in diabetics. One of the benefits of regular exercise is a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors through the improvement of the lipid profile and reduction of hypertension. This study investigated the effect of aerobic training on the cholesterol level of women with gestational diabetes. Thirty-four (34) women who met the inclusion criteria for this study were randomized into Exercise and Control groups. Exercise group participated in structured exercise programme, 3 sessions a week for 8 weeks with each session lasting a maximum of 60 minutes while the Control group did not participate in any form of structured exercise programme for the period of the study. Data were collected at baseline, at 4th week and at 8th week into the exercise programme. Thirty (30) of the participants completed the study and so only their data were analysed using Repeated Measure ANOVA and Independent t-test. The result showed significant changes in the total cholesterol (F[2, 28]) = 268.316, P = 0.001), of the Exercise group compared to the control. Twenty four (24) pregna.t women with no complica.ions pa.ticipa.ed in this study. Ba.kground: Pa.ients with stem cell myeloprolifera.ive disorders ha.e a.pa.ticula.ly poor prognosis a.d limited trea.ment options, i.e. ma.nly a.gressive chemothera.y or a.logeneic stem cell tra.spla.ta.ion. In 2004, Chen et a.. reported a.pa.ient presenting a.t(8;13) (p11;q12) cytogenic a.oma.y who responded positively to trea.ment with PKC412 (midosta.rin), a. ora. multi-ta.geted tyrosine kina.e inhibitor. Here, we report a.second ca.e trea.ed with the a.ove-mentioned drug. Pa.ient: a.71-yea.-old woma. wa. dia.nosed a. ha.ing chronic myelogenous leuka.mia.with eosinophilia.seconda.y to t(8;13) with FGFR1 involvement. Due to her a.e, a. a.logeneic stem cell tra.spla.ta.ion wa. not possible. Trea.ment: a.trea.ment combining a.gressive chemothera.y a.d midosta.rin wa. explored. The pa.ient received one cycle of hyper-CVa. chemothera.y followed by ma.ntena.ce thera.y with midosta.rin. a.rela.se occurred a.ter six months, a.d she wa. trea.ed with four more cycles of hyper-CVa. chemothera.y. The pa.ient entered a.complete clinica., ha.ma.ologica. a.d cytogenetic remission. a.ma.ntena.ce thera.y with midosta.rin continued for four months until she developed a.chemoresista.t rela.se followed by a.ute leuka.mia. Conclusion: This is the second ca.e of a.t(8;13) myeloid a.d lymphoid neopla.m with FGFR1 a.norma.ities trea.ed successfully with midosta.rin. Midosta.rin is a.ministered ora.ly, a.lows for outpa.ient ca.e a.d in this ca.e showed only occa.iona. a.d minima. side effects. The combina.ion of hyper-CVa. a.d midosta.rin extended surviva. by 21 months without a.logeneic tra.spla.ta.ion. This ca.e further supports the possibility of using midosta.rin for the trea.ment of other disea.es with FGFR1 dysregula.ions;however, specific clinica. tria.s a.e needed to confirm this hypothesis.
