Linking Local Appreciation with Conservation of an Edible Fruit Species: The Case Study of Ilama (<i>Annona diversifolia</i>Saff.) in Tierra Caliente, Mexico

The ilama tree (Annona diversifolia Saff.) is an underutilized fruit species from Mesoamerica with a noteworthy variability in southern Mexico. The present study describes differences in knowledge and appreciation of the fruit among inhabitants from different communities in Southern Mexico, as well as differences among their ilama trees. The study took place in Tierra Caliente, a region located in the states of Guerrero and the State of Mexico. Interviews were administered in three different communities as an attempt to associate the natural morphologic variation of plants and locals’ knowledge and use of the tree in order to identify their implications for conservation. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis, and the results suggest that the morphological variation of the plants and the commercial importance of ilama are well known by locals. Indigenous community inhabitants prefer and select only white pulp trees, whereas mestizo communities promote and conserve plants with white, red, purple, and blue pulp. Germplasm flow is dynamic in the region, and ilama fruit represents a different economic value for each community. Selling the fruit is the primary goal, but not specifically its conservation and promotion. Implications for in situ conservation of ilama in Mexico are discussed.

The end use of the gas product obtained in a gasification process depends on its *** agent is one of the main parameters that influences both gas quality and tar *** influence of using three different types of gasifying agent（enriched air,steam and a mixture of steam and air） on gas composition and distribution of products has been experimentally studied in a lab-scale fluidized bed plant of sewage sludge *** use of steam as gasifying agent led to a lower gas ***,LHV of the gas was higher and H2 formation was favored in this *** enriched air was used as gasifying agent,gas yield was increased and tar formation was decreased;apparent thermal efficiency of this process was lower because of the smaller percentage of light hydrocarbons in the gas.

Pseudoaneurisms are arterial wounds that affect all layers of an artery;although very rare they are mostly lethal and most of them are iatrogenic. Herein, we present two different cases of hepatic artery pseudoaneurysms derived from previous surgeries which were assessed by computed tomography angiographies and consequent conservative endovascular approaches with arteriographies, posterior cannulations and the placement of Amplatzer Vascular Plug 4 (AVP 4) systems in order to treat the pseudoaneurysm. Computed control tomographies were conducted showing no later complications. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the importance and current clinical applications of AVP in the field of interventional radiology.

Species Diversity of Entomopathogenic Fungi Infecting the Sugarcane Aphid <i>Melanaphis sacchari</i>: A Recently Introduced Pest in Mexico

The sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari, is a key pest that affects sorghum in Mexico. During 2014 to 2016, in South of Tamaulipas sites and Bajio region in Guanajuato, the populations of this aphid were infected by different species of Hypocrealean fungi. Based in the morphometric identification and molecular characterization, the species associated with sugarcane aphid in South of Tamaulipas were Lecanicillium longisporum, Beauveria bassiana and Isaria javanica. In this region, the higher infection levels were caused by L. longisporum, mortality range from 30.0% to 50.0%. The presence of I. javanica and B. bassiana represented less than 26.0% and 10.0%, respectively. In Guanajuato, the species found corresponded to L. longisporum and B. bassiana. The infection levels of both species in sugarcane aphid populations in Guanajuato sites were less than 1.00%. The natural occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi on sugarcane aphid populations was associated with climactic factors such as temperature and relative humidity and development of infections was possibly affected by abiotic factors such as crop phenological stage and applications of chemical insecticides realized by farmers for control of this aphid. Further studies on the ecology and physiology of these fungi and trials to determine virulence and persistence in M. sacchari populations are needed. This is the first report on natural presence of L. longisporum, B. bassiana and I. javanica causing disease on Melanaphis sacchari in Guanajuato and Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Effect of Polishing Procedure on the Roughness and Bacterial Adhesion of Provisional Restorative Materials

Provisional prosthetic restoration materials are exposed to oral cavity producing on the surface biofilm where different factors such as surface roughness and porosity can condition their formation and organization and can create stagnation areas that promote the bonding of organic particles, thus facilitating the formation and maturation of the biofilm. The purpose of this study was to compare surface roughness of two provisional prosthetic restorations materials and their bacterial susceptibility. In this study, two provisional restoration materials were used in two groups, A polymethyl methacrylate acrylic (nicTone MDC DEnTAL) and B bis-acryl resin (Protemp 4 ESPE 3M). A total of 80 samples (40 samples of each material) were in thick plates of 10 × 10 mm and 2 mm high. 20 samples of each material were polished, while 20 were left unpolished. Subsequently, the samples were observed by Atomic Force Microscopy for their evaluation of surface roughness. The values were analyzed with t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test. The samples were microbiologically inoculated with the strains obtained and identified from a provisional polymethyl methacrylate acrylic restoration in a patient, in order to observe bacterial adhesion using a Scanning Electron Microscope. Two strains, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomona luteola, were identified. The presence of the microorganisms was observed on the surface of both materials, either polished or unpolished, with a lower level of microorganism adhesion found on the bis-acrylic resin. There was a significant difference about surface roughness in the groups A and B with p -8). We found that the polished bis-acrylic resin showed lower surface roughness and bacterial adhesion in comparison with the polymethyl methacrylate.

Evaluation of the Radiological Characteristics of Patients with COVID-19 in a General Hospital of Tabasco

According to various studies, it has been found that due to the lack of reagents for the RT-PCR test for the accurate diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, tomography began to be used as a criterion to achieve diagnostic support in patients with lack of a definitive diagnosis. The objective of this work is to describe the tomographic findings in patients with COVID-19 and their relationship with the clinical presentation in each of the radiological patterns. According to the Feinstein Criteria, the analytical type of study, with quantifiable, non-experimental data, was cross-sectional from October 2020 to June 2021, obtaining a sample of 227 patients hospitalized in the UAER of the CMJPP. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel (2021) and SPSS. According to the radiological classifications, 6.17% (14) presented in the Initial (early) phase of the disease, 46.7% (106) were in progression and 47.14% (107) in the advanced phase of the latter with a higher percentage in the CORADS classification at level 3 with 74.5% in both;Similarly, in advanced onset, the extension with the greatest presentation was severe with 86.96% (93). Tomographic studies played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic, together with the application of international classifications such as CO-RADS and the classification issued by InER, being considered diagnostic support tools for COVID-19 and patient evolution.

PURPOSE: To describe a case with bullous keratopathy and anterior segment inflammation associated with heavy liquids. DESIGn: Observational case report. METHODS: Review of clinical and histopathologic changes. RESULTS:A65-year-old patient underwent a pars plana vitrectomy for a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Perfluorodecalin was used as a temporary retinal tamponade. After surgery, bubbles of heavy liquid were noted in the anterior chamber. Fifteen months later, severe corneal edema developed, associated with corneal vascularization and keratic precipitates. Removal of heavy liquid through a paracentesis was attempted but the cornea remained edematous, and a penetrating keratoplasty was performed. In the histopathologic examination inflammatory changes from retention of perfluorodecalin were observed. There was a decompensated cornea with florid bullous keratopathy, inflammatory infiltration with vascularization, and deposition of perfluorodecalin within keratocytes and perivascular macrophages. COnCLUSIOn: Presence of heavy liquids in the anterior chamber may be associated with an intense inflammatory response and corneal decompensation.
