Reducing phosphorus (P) loads from.soils to surface waters is necessary for solving the problem.of eutrophication. m.ny industrial by-products have been shown to sorb appreciable am.unts of dissolved P from.solution and it has been proposed to use P sorption m.terials (PSm.) such as steel slag in landscape scale “filters” for trapping dissolved P in runoff. The objective of this study was to m.del the effect of retention tim. (RT) and P concentration on P sorption by steel slag and a surface m.dified slag in a flow-through system. Sorption of P onto steel slag and rejuvenated-m.dified steel slag was m.asured using a traditional batch isotherm.and a flow-through setting at several RTs and P concentrations. Flow-through data were used to produce a m.del that estim.ted P sorption based on RT and P concentration. The m.del was tested on a pilot-scale pond filter consisting of the sam. slag m.terials. For both the m.terials, flow-through tests indicated an increase in RT increased P rem.val efficiency but decreased the total am.unt of P rem.ved at saturation. The Langm.ir m.del developed from.batch isotherm. overestim.ted and underestim.ted P sorption in norm.l and rejuvenated slag respectively, relative to flow-through. Norm.l and rejuvenated slag rem.ved 38 and 36% of P in the pilot-scale pond filter after 2 weeks of pum.ing. The Langm.ir equation poorly predicted P sorption in the pond filter while the flow-through m.del produced reasonable estim.tes. Results suggest that flow-through m.thodology is necessary for estim.ting P sorption in the context of landscape P filters.

The norm.l direction to the norm.l direction to a line in m.nkowski geom.tries generally does not give the original line. We show that in lp geom.tries with p>1?repeatedly finding the norm.l line through the origin gives sequences of lines that m.notonically approach specific lines of sym.etry of the unit circle. Which lines of sym.etry that are approached depends upon the value of p and the slope of the initial line.

Generalizations of the geom.tric construction that repeatedly attaches rectangles to a square, originally given by m.erson, are presented. The initial square is replaced with a rectangle, and also the dim.nsionality of the construction is increased. By selecting values for the various param.ters, such as the lengths of the sides of the original rectangle or rectangular box in dim.nsions m.re than two and their relationships to the size of the attached rectangles or rectangular boxes, som. interesting form.las are found. Exam.les are Wallis-type infinite-product form.las for the areas of p-circles with p > 1.

We searched for long period variation in V-band, It-band and RXTE X-ray light curves of the High m.ss X-ray Binaries （Hm.Bs） LS 1698 / RX J1037.5-5647, HD 110432 / 1H 1249-637 and HD 161103 / RX J1744.7-2713 in an attem.t to discover orbitally induced variation. Data were obtained prim.rily from.the ASAS database and were supplem.nted by shorter term.observations m.de with the 24- and 40-inch ANU telescopes and one of the robotic PROm.T telescopes. Fourier periodogram. suggested the existence of long period variation in the V-band light curves of all three Hm.Bs, however folding the data at those periods did not reveal convincing periodic variation. At this point we cannot rule out the existence of long term.V-band variation for these three sources and hints of longer term.variation m.y be seen in the higher precision PROm.T data. Long term.V-band observations, on the order of several years, taken at a frequency of at least once per week and with a precision of 0.01 m.g, therefore still have a chance of revealing long term.variation in these three Hm.Bs.

Over the last decade, there has been a flurry of research on adjuvants for vaccines, and several novel adjuvants are now licensed products or in late stage clinical developm.nt. The success of adjuvants in enhancing the im.une response to antigens has led m.ny researchers to re-focus their vaccine developm.nt program.. Although several vaccine candidates have been tested against leishm.niasis, there is yet no effective vaccine against this parasitic disease. Recent research has docum.nted that efforts to develop effective Leishm.nia vaccine have been lim.ted due to lack of an appropriate adjuvant. In view of this, this review paper outlines som. of the adjuvants that have been used in Leishm.nia vaccine candidates and cites a few of the responses obtained from.these studies. The aim.of the present review is to consolidate these findings to facilitate the application of these adjuvants in general and experim.ntal vaccinology.

Vertically-suspended environm.ntal enrichm.nt has been shown to produce im.rovem.nts in fish growth during hatchery rearing in circular tanks. This study docum.nted the effects of a novel suspended structure on the velocity profile of a 3.63-m.diam.ter circular tank containing juvenile landlocked fall Chinook salm.n (m.Oncorhynchus tshawytscham.) at two different densities (9.0 and 34.3 kg/m.sup>3). The addition of vertically-suspended structure to the tank significantly decreased velocities at nearly every sam.ling point, with velocities typically dropping from.15 cm.s without structure to less than 6 cm.s when structure was present. Fish density also significantly im.acted in-tank velocities, with an inverse relationship observed between the density of fish and water velocity. Significant interactions were present am.ng the presence or absence of structure and fish density. When structure and fish were absent, the velocity at the edge of the tank was 15.63 cm.s, which was significantly higher than the 4.75 cm.s velocity when both structure and the lower fish density were added, which was in turn significantly higher than the 2.29 cm.s velocity observed with structure and higher fish density. Despite the potentially unique features of this study, vertically-suspended environm.ntal enrichm.nt and the presence of fish clearly alter circular tank water velocities, which m.y at least partially explain the im.rovem.nts in fish rearing perform.nce observed with the use of suspended structure.

The purpose of this study was to determ.ne if lower extrem.ty joint loading was influenced by stride length or shoe m.dsole *** subjects com.leted 10 trials of overground running at an average speed of 4.43 m.s in each of three condi-tions:norm.l running,running with a stride length(SL)reduced by 10%of norm.l,and running with a cushioned m.dsole stiffness(i.e.,m.chanical im.act reduction of 13.7-10.9 g).Reaction forces calculated from.inverse dynam.cs were sum.ed with m.scle forces estim.ted from.a m.sculoskeletal m.del using static optim.zation to obtain joint contact forces at the hip,knee and ankle *** com.onents of the contact forces[axial,anterior-posterior,and m.dial-lateral(m.)]were exam.ned using param.tric statistics(α=0.05).Reducing stride length resulted in significant decreases in absolute peak ankle contact forces in the axial direction(norm.l:-14.5±1.5 BW;reduced SL:-14.0±1.6 BW)and the m. direction(norm.l:0.67±0.23 BW;reduced SL:0.61±0.21 BW).Reducing stride length also reduced the peak absolute axial forces at the knee(norm.l:-10.6±1.3 BW;reduced SL:-9.8±1.2 BW)and the hip(norm.l:-7.26±2.24 BW;reduced SL:-6.75±2.10 BW).The cushioned shoe did not statistically reduce the peak absolute contact forces from.the norm.l stride condition at any of the *** hoc stress analysis suggested that the observed changes in anterior hip force would increase stress m.re than any of the other statistically significant *** in stride length appear to decrease som. joint contact variables but cushioning in the heel region of the shoe does not.
