Integrated valves enable automated control in microfuidic systems,as they can be applied for mixing,pumping and compartmentalization *** automation would be highly valuable for applications in organ-on-chip(OoC)***,OoC systems typically have channel dimensions in the range of hundreds of micrometers,which is an order of magnitude larger than those of typical microfluidic *** most-used fabrication process for integrated,normally open polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)valves requires a reflow photoresist that limits the achievable channel *** addition,the low stroke volumes of these valves make it challenging to achieve flow rates of microliters per minute,which are typically required in OoC ***,we present a mechanical'macrovalve'fabricated by multilayer soft lithography using micromilled direct *** demonstrate that these valves can close off rounded channels of up to 700μm high and 1000μm ***,we used these macrovalves to create a peristaltic pump with a pumping rate of up to 48μL/min and a mixing and metering device that can achieve the complete mixing of a volume of 6.4μL within only 17 *** initial cell culture experiment demonstrated that a device with integrated macrovalves is biocompatible and allows the cell culture of endothelial cells over multiple days under continuous perfusion and automated medium refreshment.

Background: Q-Factor(QF), or the inter-pedal width, in cycling is similar to step-width in gait. Although increased step-width has been shown to reduce peak knee abduction moment(KAbM), no studies have examined the biomechanical effects of increased QF in cycling at different workrates in healthy ***: A total of 16 healthy participants(8 males, 8 females, age: 22.4 ± 2.6 years, body mass index: 22.78 ± 1.43 kg/m^2, mean ± SD) participated.A motion capture system and customized instrumented pedals were used to collect 3-dimensional kinematic(240 Hz) and pedal reaction force(PRF)(1200 Hz) data in 12 testing conditions: 4 QF conditions—Q1(15.0 cm), Q2(19.2 cm), Q3(23.4 cm), and Q4(27.6 cm)—under 3 workrate conditions—80 watts(W), 120 W, and 160 W. A 3 × 4(QF × workrate) repeated measures of analysis of variance were performed to analyze differences among conditions(p ts: Increased QF increased peak KAbM by 47%, 56%, and 56% from Q1 to Q4 at each respective workrate. Mediolateral PRF increased from Q1 to Q4 at each respective workrate. Frontal-plane knee angle and range of motion decreased with increased QF. No changes were observed for peak vertical PRF, knee extension moment, sagittal plane peak knee joint angles, or range of ***: Increased QF increased peak KAbM, suggesting increased medial compartment loading of the knee. QF modulation may influence frontal-plane joint loading when using stationary cycling for exercise or rehabilitation purposes.

In the present study,the newly established preformation formula is applied for the first time to study the kinematics of the cluster emission from various radioactive nuclei,especially those that decay to the double shell closure^(208)Pb nucleus and its neighbors as *** recently proposed universal cluster preformation formula has been established based on the concepts that underscore the influence of mass and charge asymmetry(η_(A)andη_(Z)),cluster mass A_(c),and the Q-value,paving the way to quantify the energy contribution during preformation as well as during the tunneling process *** cluster-daughter interaction potential is obtained by folding the relativistic mean-field(RMF)densities with the recently developed microscopic R3Y using the NL 3^(*)and the phenomenological M3Y NN potentials to compare their *** penetration probabilities are calculated from the WKB *** the inclusion of the new preformation probability P_(0),the predicted half-lives of the R3Y and M3Y interactions are in good agreement with the experimental ***,a careful inspection reflects slight differences in the decay half-lives,which arise from their respective barrier *** P_(0)for systems with double magic shell closure^(208)Pb daughter are found to be an order of≈10^(2)higher than those with neighboring Pb daughter *** exploring the contributions of the decay energy,the recoil effect of the daughter nucleus is evaluated,in contrast to several other ***,the centrality of the Q-value in the decay process is demonstrated and redefined within the preformed cluster-decay ***,we have introduced a simple and intuitive set of criteria that governs the estimation of recoil energy in the cluster radioactivity.

A molecular phylogenetic analysis of most of the species of Perezia reveals that,as traditionally defined,the genus is not monophyletic with two species more closely related to Nassauvia than to *** addition,our results show that Burkartia(Perezia) lanigera is related to Acourtia and is the only member of that clade in South *** remaining species are monophyletic and show a pattern of an early split between a western temperate and an eastern subtropical clade of *** the western clade,the phylogeny indicates a pattern of diversification that proceeded from southern,comparatively low-elevation habitats to southern high-elevation habitats,and ultimately into more northern high-elevation *** most derived clades are found in the high central Andes,where significant radiation has occurred.

the nuclear factor kappaB(NF-κB)family of transcription factors regulates immune and inflammatory responses and controls cell survival,proliferation,differentiation,and apoptosis.1 the five subunits of the NF-κB family,(RelA,RelB,c-Rel,p105/p50,and p100/p52),are categorized as activating(RelA,RelB,and c-Rel),or inhibitory(p105/p50 and p100/p52),based on the presence or absence of the transactivation domain and form homo-and ***-dependent activation of NF-κB,either by the classical pathway involving the degradation of the inhibitor of NF-κB(IκB)or by the alternative pathway involving the partial degradation of p100 to p52 and formation of the p52/RelB dimer,has emerged as a central theme in the regulation of NF-κBdependent genes.2–4 However,in Sertoli cells and some neurons,lymphocytes,and malignant cells,NF-κB has been shown to be constitutively active in the nucleus5,6(***/nf-kb).Moreover,several recent studies have also identified disease-associated mutations in the NF-κB subunits that affect their expression level and transcriptional activity.2,7 Our understanding of the ways in which the changes in the basal level of NF-κB affect the subsequent basal regulation of the expression of NF-κBdependent genes remain poorly defined.

Purpose:the purpose of this study was to compare knee biomechanics of the replaced limb to the non-replaced limb of total knee replacement(tKR)patients and healthy controls during walking on level ground and on decline surfaces of 5°,10°,and 15°.Methods:twenty-five tKR patients and 10 healthy controls performed 5 walking trials on different decline slopes on a force platform and an instrumented ramp *** analyses of variance,2×2(limb×group)and 2×4(limb×decline slope),were used to examine selected biomechanics ***:the replaced limb of tKR patients had lower peak loading-response and push-off knee extension moment than the non-replaced and the matched limb of healthy *** differences were found in loading-response and push-off knee internal abduction moments among replaced,non-replaced,and matched limb of healthy *** knee flexion range of motion,peak loading-response vertical ground reaction force,and peak knee extension moment increased across all slope comparisons between 0°and 15°in both the replaced and non-replaced limb of tKR ***:Downhill walking may not be appropriate to include in early stage rehabilitation exercise protocols for tKR patients.

the epididymis is divided into caput, corpus and cauda regions, organized into intraregional segments separated by connective tissue septa （CtS）. In the adult rat and mouse these segments are highly differentiated. Regulation of these segments is by endocrine, lumicrine and paracrine factors, the relative importance of which remains under investigation. Here, the ability of the CtS to limit signaling in the interstitial compartment is reviewed as is the effect of 15 days of unilateral efferent duct ligation （EDL） on ipsilateral segmental transcriptional profiles. Inter-segmental microperifusions of epidermal growth factor （EGF）, vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGFA） and fibroblast growth factor 2 （FGF2） increased phosphorylation of mitogen activated protein kinase （MAPK） in segments 1 and 2 of the rat epididymis and the effects of all factors were limited by the CtS separating the segments. Microan＇ay analysis of segmental gene expression determined the effect of 15 days of unilateral EDL on the transcriptome-wide gene expression of rat segments 1-4. Over 11 000 genes were expressed in each of the four segments and over 2 000 transcripts in segment 1 responded to deprivation of testicular lumicrine factors. Segments 1 and 2 of control tissues were the most transcriptionally different and EDL had its greatest effects there. In the absence of lumicrine factors, all four segments regressed to a transcriptionally undifferentiated state, consistent with the less differentiated histology. Deprivation of lumicrine factors could stimulate an individual gene＇s expression in some segments yet suppress it in others. Such results reveal a higher complexity of the regulation of rat epididymal segments than that is generally appreciated. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 565-573）
