Immunovirological and Biochemical Changes in Nigerian Patients with Hepatitis B Coinfection on Antiretroviral Therapy

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection with HIV is high among Nigerians. Some studies have suggested impaired CD4 recovery among coinfected patients compared to the HIV mono infected. This retrospective study of treatment-na?ve HIV infected patients was aimed at determining the trend of changes in CD4+ counts, HIV-RNA and renal and liver function tests in response to combined antiretroviral therapy (CART). A questionnaire was utilised to extract clinical and laboratory data of HBV co infected HIV/AIDS patients before treatment and at six, twelve and eighteen months of therapy with CART. Findings were compared to those of HIV mono infected. Relevant statistical instruments were used to analyse for comparisons of means of Log10 HIV viral load and CD4 count using SPSS package 15.0. All levels of sig-nificance were at 5 %. Two thousand five hundred and sixty two patients were analysed. Of these, 354(13.8%) were HBsAg positive. Majority (63.1%) were females. Most of the recruited patients were on combivir and nevirapine. The median CD4 count for the HBsAg negative was 104 cells/mm3 (IQR 34 – 171) and it was significantly higher than those of the positive (91 cells/mm3) (p < 0.05). ALT and AST were higher among HBsAg positives, while urea and creatinine levels were similar. The median change in CD4 count from baseline and during the course of therapy were similar in the two groups. Similarly, virological responses were not different in the two groups at the various time points. In con-clusion no significant difference in the rate of CD4 recovery and HIV-RNA decline in among coinfected and monoin-fected HIV patients at different stages of therapy.

Overall Performance, Carcass Yield, Meat Safety Potentials and Economic Value of Heat-Stressed Broilers Fed Diets with Balanced Electrolytes

Tropical regions across the globe are characterized by an annually prolonged hot weather conditions that showcase limiting production efficiency in livestock industry, as domesticated animals leave the zone of maximum comfort, under heat stress, with death and reduced carcass yield accompanying the subsequent alteration in body chemistry and behavior. However, pen house orientation, cooling systems, genetic modification and different dietary manipulations have been employed in poultry industry, but many of such did not account for the body’s acid-base equilibrium and the potentials of aggregate levels of dietary electrolytes in enhancing carcass yield of broilers under severe heat stress conditions. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of different electrolyte-balanced diets on overall performance, carcass yield, meat safety potentials and economic value of heat-stressed broilers reared for five weeks. Arbor Acre broiler chicks (n = 300) were randomly allotted to diets with aggregate electrolyte balance of 210 (T1), 240 (T2), 270 (T3), 300 (T4), 330 (T5) and 360 (T6) mEq/Kg, in a completely randomised design. On day 35, birds whose weights were closest to the mean class weight were selected from each replicate pen for carcass yield assessment. To review studies on hypertension in Nigeria over the past five decades in terms of prevalence,awareness and treatment and *** our search on Pubmed,African Journals Online and the World Health Organization Global cardiovascular infobase,1060 related references were identified out of which 43 were found to be relevant for this *** overall prevalence of hypertension in Nigeria ranges from 8%-46.4% depending on the study target population,type of measurement and cut-off value used for defining *** prevalence is similar in men and women(7.9%-50.2% vs 3.5%-68.8%,respectively) and in the urban(8.1%-42.0%) and rural setting(13.5%-46.4%).The pooled prevalence increased from 8.6% from the only study during the period from 1970-1979 to 22.5%(2000-2011).Awareness,treatment and control of hypertension were generally low with attendant high burden of hypertension related *** order to improve outcomes of cardiovascular disease in Africans,public health education to improve awareness of hypertension is *** epidemiological studies on hypertension are required to adequately understand and characterize the impact of hypertension in society.
