Cement production is a major contributor to anthropogenic Co_(2) emissions and solid waste *** paper discusses some of the key issues as regards the slow progress in achieving environmental sustainability in the cement ***-niques such as carbon capture and storage(CCS),material substitution,alternative fuels and energy efficient technologies have been proposed as means of mitigating the negative environmental impact of cement *** was observed that much progress has been made in the area of eco-friendly research *** innovations(considered as disruptive by the mega co-operations)have had issues at the entrepreneurial *** so-called disruptive technologies have strug-gled to meet some performance requirements and satisfy funding evaluators thus are still difficult to fully *** systematisation of the environmental sustainability problem was discussed as a possible way forward both in the environ-mental,economic and social *** into the future,a greater emphasis on systematised decision-based approach could help breach the gap between on-paper plans and practical implementations to achieve environmental sustainability.

Climate change has been a global pandemic with its adverse impacts affecting environments and livelihoods. This has been largely attributed to anthropogenic activities which generate large amounts of Green House Gases (GHGs), notably carbon dioxide (Co2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2o) among others. In the Upper East of Ghana, climate change manifests in erratic rainfalls, drought, high temperatures, high wind speeds, high intensity rainfall, windstorms, flooding, declining vegetation cover, perennial devastating bushfires etc. Practices such as burning farm residues, use of dung as fuel for cooking, excessive application of nitrogenous fertilizers, and deforestation that are prevalent in the region exacerbate the situation. Although, efforts made by governmental and none-governmental organizations to mitigate climate change through afforestation, agroforestry and promotion of less fuelwood consuming cook stoves, land management practices antagonize these efforts as more Co2 is generated than the carrying capacity of vegetation in the region. Research findings have established the role of trees and soil in carbon sequestration in mitigating climate. However, there is limited knowledge on how the vegetation and soil in agroforestry interplay in mitigation climate change. It is against this background that this review seeks to investigate how vegetation and soil in an agroforestry interact synergistically to sequester carbon and contribute to mitigating climate change in Upper East region of Ghana. In this review, it was discovered soil stored more carbon than vegetation in an agroforestry system and is much effective in mitigating climate change. It was found out that in order to make soil and vegetation in an agroforestry system interact synergistically to effectively mitigate climate change, Climate Smart Agriculture practice which integrates trees, and perennials crops effectively mitigates climate. How well does XAD resin extraction recover halogenated disinfection byproducts for comprehensive identification and toxicity testing?

Halogenated disinfection byproducts(DBPs) are an unintended consequence of drinking water disinfection, and can have significant toxicity. XAD resins are commonly used to extract and enrich trace levels of DBPs for comprehensive, nontarget identification of DBPs and also for in vitro toxicity studies. However, XAD resin recoveries for complete classes of halogenated DBPs have not been evaluated, particularly for low, environmentally relevant levels(ng/L to low μg/L). Thus, it is not known whether levels of DBPs or the toxicity of drinking water might be underestimated. In this study, DAX-8/XAD-2 layered resins were evaluated, considering both adsorption and elution from the resins, for extracting 66 DBPs from water. Results demonstrate that among the 7 classes of DBPs investigated, trihalomethanes(THMs), including iodo-THMs, were the most efficiently adsorbed, with recovery of most THMs ranging from 50%-96%, followed by halonitromethanes(40%-90%). The adsorption ability of XAD resins for haloacetonitriles, haloacetamides, and haloacetaldehydes was highly dependent on the individual species. The adsorption capacity of XAD resins for haloacetic acids was lower(5%-48%), even after adjusting to p H 1 before extraction. Recovery efficiency for most DBPs was comparable with their adsorption, as most were eluted effectively from XAD resins by ethyl acetate. DBP polarity and molecular weight were the two most important factors that determine their recovery. Recovery of trichloromethane, iodoacetic acid, chloro-and iodo-acetonitrile, and chloroacetamide were among the lowest, which could lead to underestimation of toxicity, particularly for iodoacetic acid and iodo-acetonitrile, which are highly toxic.

Despite exploration and production success in Niger Delta,several failed wells have been encountered due to ***,it is very essential to understand the spatial distribution of pore pressure and the generating mechanisms in order to mitigate the pitfalls that might arise during *** research provides estimates of pore pressure along three offshore wells using the Eaton's transit time method,multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network(MLP-ANN)and random forest regression(RFR)*** results show that there are three pressure magnitude regimes:normal pressure zone(hydrostatic pressure),transition pressure zone(slightly above hydrostatic pressure),and over pressured zone(significantly above hydrostatic pressure).The top of the geopressured zone(2873 mbRT or 9425.853 ft)averagely marks the onset of overpressurization with the excess pore pressure above hydrostatic pressure(P∗)varying averagely along the three wells between 1.06−24.75 *** results from the three methods are self-consistent with strong correlation between the Eaton's method and the two machine learning *** models have high accuracy of about>97%,low mean absolute percentage error(MAPEoefficient of determination(R2>0.98).our results have also shown that the principal generating mechanisms responsible for high pore pressure in the offshore Niger Delta are disequilibrium compaction,unloading(fluid expansion)and shale diagenesis.

Distributed computing frameworks are the fundamental component of distributed computing *** provide an essential way to support the efficient processing of big data on clusters or *** size of big data increases at a pace that is faster than the increase in the big data processing capacity of ***,distributed computing frameworks based on the MapReduce computing model are not adequate to support big data analysis tasks which often require running complex analytical algorithms on extremely big data sets in *** performing such tasks,these frameworks face three challenges:computational inefficiency due to high I/o and communication costs,non-scalability to big data due to memory limit,and limited analytical algorithms because many serial algorithms cannot be implemented in the MapReduce programming *** distributed computing frameworks need to be developed to conquer these *** this paper,we review MapReduce-type distributed computing frameworks that are currently used in handling big data and discuss their problems when conducting big data *** addition,we present a non-MapReduce distributed computing framework that has the potential to overcome big data analysis challenges.

This paper presents the catalytic effect of NaH doped nanocrystalline Tio_(2)(designated as NaTioxH)in the improvement of MgH_(2)hydrogen storage *** catalyst preparation involves ball milling NaH with Tio_(2)for 3 *** addition of 5 wt%NaTioxH powder into MgH_(2)reduces its operating temperature to∼185℃,which is∼110℃lower than the additive-free as-milled MgH_(2).The composite remarkably desorbs∼7.2 wt%H_(2)within 15 min at∼290℃and reabsorbs∼4.5 wt%H_(2)in 45 min at room temperature under 50 bar H_(2).MgH_(2)dehydrogenation is activated at 57 kJ/mol by the *** importantly,the addition of 2.5 wt%NaTioxH catalyst aids MgH_(2)to reversibly produce∼6.1 wt%H_(2)upon 100 cycles within 475 hr at 300℃.Microstructural investigation into the catalyzed MgH_(2)composite reveals a firm contact existing between NaTioxH and MgH_(2)***,the NaTioxH catalyst consists of catalytically active Ti_(3)o_(5),and“rod-like”Na_(2)Ti_(3)o_(7)species liberated in-situ during preparation;these active species could provide multiple hydrogen diffusion pathways for an improved MgH_(2)sorption ***,the elemental characterization identifies the reduced valence states of titanium(Tiow some sort of reversibility consistent with H_(2)insertion and *** phenomenon is believed to enhance the mobility of Mg/MgH_(2)electrons by the creation and elimination of oxygen vacancies in the defective(Tio_(2-x))*** findings have therefore moved MgH_(2)closer to practical applications.
