The Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Yaounde Group on the northern edge of the Congo Shield in Central Africa were investigated to understand their provenance and depositional ***,geochemistry,and field evidence helped to subdivide the metasediments into paragneiss,mica schist,chlorite schist,and quartzite which were derived from greywacke,shale,quartz arenite,litharenite *** are immature with some mature samples,moderately weathered and reworked Neo-and Post-Archean *** earth element signatures(Chondrite Eu/Eu^(*)≤1),enrichment of light rare earth elements over the heavy ones,and the La/Sc ratio(>0.7)are compatible with those of the intermediate and felsic sources from the upper continental *** metasediments were deposited in the continental arc setting and have evolved during Proterozoic times according to the Wilson cycle to form the West Gondwana including NE Brazil.

In neurons,mitochondria are enriched to provide energy and calcium buffering required for synaptic ***,mitochondria localize to the synapse,where they are critical for the mobilization of reserve pool vesicles and for neurotransmitter ***,functional defects in mitochondria were considered to be downstream effects of neurodegenerative ***,more recent findings suggest mitochondria may serve as key mediators in the onset and progression of some types of *** this review,we explore the possible roles of altered mitochondrial function and dynamics in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders,with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and Parkinson’s disease(PD),which have highlighted the important role of mitochondria in *** inheritable diseases like Charcot-marie-Tooth disease type 2A are concretely linked to gene mutations affecting mitochondrial function,the cause of mitochondrial dysfunction in primarily sporadic diseases such as AD and PD is less *** death in PD is associated with defects in mitochondrial function and dynamics arising from mutations in proteins affecting these processes,including α-synuclein,DJ-1,LRRK2,Parkin and *** the case of AD,however,the connection between mitochondria and the onset of neurodegeneration has been less *** findings,however,have implicated altered function of ER-mitochondria contact sites and amyloid beta-and/or tau-induced defects in mitochondrial function and dynamics in the pathogenesis of AD,suggesting that mitochondrial defects may act as key mediators in the pathogenesis of AD as *** recent findings at hand,it may be postulated that defects in mitochondrial processes comprise key events in the onset of neurodegeneration.

Gravity Interpretation of the Cameroon Mountain (West Central Africa) Based on the New and Existing Data

A new gravity survey of the Mount Cameroon area has enabled the definition of four major gravimetric do- mains, which coincide with the recognized structural units. In order to determine the nature of superficial and deep structures in this mountainous zone, new gravity data have been processed. These new gravity data was integrated to existing gravity data to propose the new complete Bouguer anomaly map of the region, and then to show major characteristics of the Bouguer gravity of this area. The interpretation of gravity patterns (bouguer maps) in terms of geological data, shows that the Mount Cameroon zone belongs to a wide positive anomaly;these anomalies display complex gravity domains, which seem to be similar to that due to major structural units in the region and volcanic activity of the mountain. In the mountain active zone in particular (between 2000 and 3800 m of altitude), the new anomalies map shows high gravity anomalies (from 11 to 60 mgal), coupled with low gravity at some stations (in the summit, 4060 m) where gravity anomaly is about –30 mgal. The steep WNW-ESE gravity gradients observed on the gravity maps mark the transition between positive in the south and negative anomalies.

The study was carried out to assess the effect of management practices on agronomic parameters of cocoa agroecosystems in the peripheral zone of Ebo Forest Reserve. Purposive random sampling was conducted to establish experimental plots on the farms of willing farmers. Demonstration plots were established and agronomic parameters were monitored for “farmers’ practice (FP) and integrated crop pest and disease management (ICPM) practice” using indicators of Cocoa agro-ecosystem analysis (AESA). The FP and ICPM treatments were replicated in ten sites. From AESA records of agronomic parameters, the “observe, learn, decide and act” (OLDA) model was implemented in the ICPM treatments only. The effects of management practices were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and treatment means compared using Turkey’s T-test at 5% probability. Results of ANOVA between the two Management practices showed that over 50% of the response variables were statistically significant. Means separated through GLM ANOVA with Tukey pairwise comparisons at α = 0.05 showed that 14 (53.8%) out of 26 response variables monitored were statistically significant between the two management practices. Pruning, shade management, phytosanitary harvest, rational use of pesticides, farm sanitation, pod harvesting, breaking, fermentation of beans and drying were regular in the ICPM treatment and time-bound in the FP treatment. The average total production varied from 385.83 kg/ha in FP treatment to 572.8 kg/ha in the ICPM treatment, still below the average standard of 1000 kg/ha. The OLDA model applied in ICPM treatment following AESA is a relevant tool to enhance sustainability in the management of cocoa agroecosystems. Farmers should be sensitized and trained on appropriate farm management techniques and enhance access to extension services as well as make available improved and grafted planting materials to ensure appropriate productivity levels.

Building on the pioneering work of Jean-marie Andre and working in the laboratory he founded, the authors have developed a code called FT-1D to make Hartree-Fock electronic structure computations for stereoregular polymers using Ewald-type con- vergence acceleration methods. That code also takes full advantage of all line-group symmetries to calculate only the minimal set of two-electron integrals and to optimize the computation of the Fock matrix. The present communication reports a bench- mark study of the FT-1D code using polytetrafluoroethylene （PTFE） as a test case. Our results not only confirm the algorith- mic correctness of the code through agreement with other studies where they are applicable, but also show that the use of con- vergence acceleration enables accurate results to be obtained in situations where other widely-used codes （e.g., PLH and Crys- tal） fail. It is also found that full attention to the line-group symmetry of the PTFE polymer leads to an increase of between one and two orders of magnitude in the speed of computation. The new code can therefore be viewed as extending the range of electronic-structure computations for stereoregular polymers beyond the present scope of the successful and valuable code Crystal.

Explanatory Factors for the Variation in HIV Prevalence between Regions of Côte d’Ivoire: An Ecological Study

Introduction: No study has analyzed the reasons for the difference in HIV prevalence between Ivorian regions ranging from 1.3% in the central-western region to 4.1% in Abidjan among men. Objective: To analyze explanatory factors for the difference in HIV prevalence observed in men in Côte d’Ivoire’s regions. Methodology: Assessment of the relationship between HIV prevalence per region and risk factors explored in the 2012 Côte d’Ivoire Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). A multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between HIV prevalence and each variable. Results: The explanatory power of the variation of HIV prevalence between regions was 98%. There was a significant association between HIV prevalence and union (r = −0.38;p = 0.008;95% CI (−0.53 to −0.23)), condom use (r = −0.01;p = 0.19;95% CI (−0.03 to −0.01)), practice of Christian religion (r = −0.1;p = 0.017;95% CI (−0.16 to −0.05)), and schooling (r = −0.01;p = 0.25;95% CI (−0.04 to 0.02)). There was a paradoxical association between HIV prevalence and mean age at first sexual intercourse (r = −0.1;p = 0.017;95% CI (−0.16 to −0.05)) and sexual infections (r = −0.48;p = 0.016;95% CI (−0.75 to −0.22)). Conclusion: The explanatory factors for the difference in HIV prevalence observed in men in the regions of the country were union, condom use, mean age at first sexual intercourse, sexual infection, sexual activity, and multiple sexual partnerships. However, only union and condom use were effective in reducing HIV prevalence by preventing new infections.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is a public health concern and is mainly caused by Human papillomaviruses (HPV). In many parts of the world, studies are being carried out to understand the different genotypes to better tackle this issue. We conducted a study to determine the prevalence of HPV genotypes in women with chronic hepatitis B or C infection, co-infected or not with HIV, treated at the Hôpital Saint Camille in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Methods: This study was conducted from April to July 2023, including 100 women in gastroenterology at Hôpital Saint Camille. A questionnaire on their socio-demographic and life style was administrated;and endocervical samples were collected using sterile swabs and then sent to Centre of Biomolecular Research Pietro Annigoni (CERBA). HPV molecular detection and genotyping were performed by PCR and hybridization using the HPV Direct Flow Chips kit. Data were analysis using chi square test or Fischer’s exact test with a significance threshold for p Results: The prevalence of HPV infection was 28% (28/100) on the sample of women tested. The most frequent genotypes were HPV 52 (8.33%), followed by HPV 18 and 68 (6.25% each) for high-risk HPVs, and HPV 6, 44/55 and 62/81 (8.33% each) for low-risk HPVs. Conclusion: This study, the first of its kind in Burkina Faso on this group of the population, reveals that the most frequent genotypes found in this study are not included in the vaccine available in Burkina Faso (Gardasil®4).

We simulate ultra-cold interacting bosons in quasi-one-dimensional, incommensurate optical lattices. In the tight-binding limit, these lattices have pseudo-random on-site energies and thus can potentially lead to Anderson localization. We use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism in the Bose-Hubbard model to explore the parameter regimes that lead to exponential localization of the ground state in a 3-colour optical lattice and investigate the role of repulsive interactions, harmonic confinement and finite temperature.

Introduction: To participate effectively in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), mothers need to have a good knowledge of TB and its prevention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of mothers about TB and Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG). Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey performed from September to December 2015 in 4 health care facilities of Kinshasa. It concerned mothers of children who received BCG vaccine. The frequencies and chi-square of Pearson were used to report results. Results: A total of 380 couples of the children and their mothers were recruited. The median age of children was 16 months (ranges: 6 days to 59 months);224 (58.9%) of them received BCG during the period recommended;62 (16.3%) experienced a side effect. There was a significant association (p = 0.00) between sides effects and the delayed vaccination. The average age of the mothers was 29.3 ± 6.4 years;352 (92.6%) had heard about TB;28 (7.4%) never heard about it;168 (44.2%) knew that TB is a contagious disease;only 111 (29.2%) knew the mode of transmission;87 (22.9%) did not know any signs of TB, and 54 (14.2%) knew about prevention with the BCG vaccine. Factors significantly associated with the mothers’ lack of knowledge were a low level of education (p = 0.01), young age (p = 0.02), and place of residence (p = 0.04). Conclusion: There is an urgent need to improve the education of the population, particularly those who lives in poor conditions and who are uneducated.
