The multi-dimensional laser is a fascinating platform not only for the discovery and understanding of new higherdimensional coherent lightwaves but also for the frontier study of the complex three-dimensional(3D)nonlinear dynamics and solitary waves widely involved in physics,chemistry,biology and materials *** controlling coherent lightwave oscillation in multi-dimensional lasers,however,is challenging and has largely been unexplored;yet,it is crucial for both designing 3D coherent light fields and unveiling any underlying nonlinear ***,for the first time,we genetically harness a multi-dimensional fibre laser using intracavity wavefront shaping technology such that versatile lasing characteristics can be *** demonstrate that the output power,mode profile,optical spectrum and mode-locking operation can be genetically optimized by appropriately designing the objective function of the genetic *** is anticipated that this genetic and systematic intracavity control technology for multi-dimensional lasers will be an important step for obtaining high-performance 3D lasing and presents many possibilities for exploring multi-dimensional nonlinear dynamics and solitary waves that may enable new applications.

Effect of benzaldehyde on the electrodeposition and corrosion properties of Ni–W alloys

The effect of different concentrations of benzaldehyde on the electrodeposition of Ni–W alloy coatings on a mild steel substrate from a citrate electrolyte was investigated in this study. The electrolytic alkaline bath(p H 8.0) contained stoichiometric amounts of nickel sulfate, sodium tungstate, and trisodium citrate as precursors. The corrosion resistance of the Ni–W-alloy-coated specimens in 0.2 mol/L H2SO4 was studied using various electrochemical techniques. Tafel polarization studies reveal that the alloy coatings obtained from the bath containing 50 ppm benzaldehyde exhibit a protection efficiency of 95.33%. The corrosion rate also decreases by 21.5 times compared with that of the blank. A higher charge-transfer resistance of 1159.40 ?·cm2 and a lower double-layer capacitance of 29.4 μF·cm-2 further confirm the better corrosion resistance of the alloy coating. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the deposits on the mild steel surface are consisted of nanocrystals. A lower surface roughness value(Rmax) of the deposits is confirmed by atomic force microscopy.

coupling of the recovery of earliest Silurian sponges and ocean redox conditions:Evidence from South china

Many aspects of the Late Ordovician Mass Extinction(LOME)aftermath and recovery have been puzzling due to heterogeneities in tempo and triggering *** fossil groups,which are the most severely affected by oxidative stress,offer the best opportunities for understanding both biological and ecological recovery after the *** recent studies,deep-water sponge assemblages(which may have had high physiological tolerance to oxygen deviations)have been reported widely across South china in the immediate aftermath of the extinction *** order to further explore the lateral and temporal distributions of sponges,and ecological effects of benthic recovery during this critical interval,this study presents new Llandovery sponge assemblages recovered from two sections in Hunan Province,South china,accompanied by geochemical *** sponge communities are preserved by pyritic spicule replacements and shows a relatively deep-water affinity(estimated around 60-150 m in depth)comparable to several previously reported assemblages in South china,and consistent with the observed graptolite *** analysis of total organic carbon(TOc)and major and trace element composition in both sections show similar trends,indicating a shift in redox state of the bottom-water from persistent anoxia or intermittent euxinia in the earliest Rhuddanian,becoming oxygenated in the early *** on the present study and previous biological and geochemical data from South china,the distribution of early Silurian sponge assemblages in South china demonstrates a gradual expansion towards deeper regions when ocean redox conditions *** study confirms the continuity of the end-Ordovician sponge faunas and taxa,both laterally across South china,and temporally through the early *** pioneering colonization of sponges in low-oxygen environments after the LOME may have set the stage for the subsequent recovery of other benthic organisms.

cryogenic nanosecond and picosecond high average and peak power(HAPP) pump lasers for ultrafast applications

Using cryogenic laser technology, it is now possible to design and demonstrate lasers that have concomitant high average and peak powers, with near-diffraction-limited beam quality. We refer to these new laser systems as HAPP lasers. In this paper, we review important laser crystal materials properties at cryogenic temperature, with an emphasis on Yb lasers, and discuss the important design considerations, including the laser-induced damage threshold, nonlinear effects and thermal effects. A comprehensive model is presented to describe diode pulsed pumping with arbitrary duration and repetition rate, and is used with the Frantz–Nodvik equation to describe, to first order, the performance of HAPP laser systems. A computer code with representative results is also described.

In a recent article published in Nature,Sen Santara et *** a general mechanism that allows endoplasmic reticulum(ER)stress,a common response to many cellular dysfunctions,to signal to natural killer(NK)cells to destroy the stressed cell(Fig.1).1 This mechanism suggests that targeting this signaling pathway might serve as a common therapeutic approach to treat disparate diseases,including cancers and *** innate immune system recognizes molecular signa-tures that indicate threats to the organism,and transduces these signatures into an immune response to counter these *** part of the innate immune system,NK cells constitute a lymphoid immune cell type that kills infected or cancerous cells on the basis of their presentation of specific ligands or markers on the surface of abnormal cells.

Effect of fiber orientation in uni-directional glass epoxy laminate using acoustic emission monitoring

Acoustic emission （AE） can be used for in situ structural health monitoring of the composite laminates. One of the main issues of AE is to characterize different damage mechanisms from the detected AE signals. In the present work, pure resin and GFRP composites laminates with different stacking sequences such as 0°, 90°, angle ply[±45°], cross-ply [0°/90°] are used to trigger different failure mechanisms when subjected to tensile test with AE monitoring. The study of failure mechanisms is facilitated by the choice of different oriented specimens in which one or two such mechanisms predominate. Range of peak frequencies in each orientation is investigated using FFT analysis. Fast Fourier Transform （FFT） enabled calculating the frequency content of each damage mechanism. Randomly selected hits from each range of peak frequencies for the specimens with different orientations subjected to tensile test with AE monitoring are analyzed using short time FFT （STFFT） analysis. STFFT analysis is used to highlight the possible failure mechanism associated with each signal. The predominance of failure modes in each orientation is useful in the study of discrimination of failure modes in composite laminates from AE data.

Unintended targeting of Dmp1-cre reveals a critical role for Bmpr1a signaling in the gastrointestinal mesenchyme of adult mice

cre/loxP technology has been widely used to study cell type-specific functions of genes. Proper interpretation of such data critically depends on a clear understanding of the tissue specificity of cre expression. The Dmpl- cre mouse, expressing cre from a 14-kb DNA fragment of the mouse Dmpl gene, has become a common tool for studying gene function in osteocytes, but the presumed cell specificity is yet to be fully established. By using the Ai9 reporter line that expresses a red fluorescent protein upon cre recombination, we find that in 2-month-old mice, Dmpl-cre targets not only osteocytes within the bone matrix but also osteoblasts on the bone surface and preosteoblasts at the metaphyseal chondro-osseous junction. In the bone marrow, cre activity is evident in certain stromal cells adjacent to the blood vessels, but not in adipocytes. Outside the skeleton, Dmpl-cre marks not only the skeletal muscle fibers, certain cells in the cerebellum and the hindbrain but also gastric and intestinal mesenchymal cells that express Pdgfra. confirming the utility of Dmpl-cre in the gastrointestinal mesenchyme, deletion of Bmprla with Dmpl-cre causes numerous large polyps along the gastrointestinal tract, consistent with prior work involving inhibition of BMP signaling. Thus, caution needs to be exercised when using Dmpl-cre because it targets not only the osteoblast lineage at an earlier stage than previously appreciated, but also a number of non-skeletal cell types.

Distribution of Human Lens crystallins and Their Sulphydryl contents of Different Age in Two-dimension Electrophoresis

Purpose: To analyze water-soluble(WS) human lens proteins of fetus, adult and age-related cataract by two-dimensional IEF/SDSPAGE electrophoresis. Methods: DAcM [ N- (7-Dimethylamino-4-methyl-3-coumarinyl) maleimide ] was used to determine the lens proteins sulphydryl (SH) ***: Protein SH contents in WS lens proteins have no significant difference among fetus, adult and age-related cataract lens. This is different from the relative published results obtained in lens proteins of animal cataract model using similar SH detecting ***: IEF/SDS-PAGE electrophoresis demonstrated that there were much more fragmentation of crystallins during lens development and cataractogenic process. It is suggested that this phenomenon is likely to be due to further conformational changes in the fragmented cyrstallins during aging and cataractogenic process. Eye Science 1999; 15:32-35.
