Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare malignant tumour with an incidence of 2.5 per million people annually. It is the most common type of all the retroperitoneal malignant tumours. Early diagnosis of the tumour is difficult because of absence of specific clinical presentation. Symptoms would only occur if the tumour exhibits pressure on the surrounding organs. It usually occurs between the fourth to sixth decades of life affecting both genders equally. Histological subtypes include: well-differentiated, poorly differentiated, myxoid, round cell and pleomorphic. Radiological imaging useful in diagnosis include: ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Complete surgical resection of the tumour and the adjacent viscera involved or organs remained the mainstay of treatment. Radiotherapy plays a role in reducing the risk of recurrence but its effect on the overall survival of patients is not known. The case presented is a 48-year-old male patient with retroperitoneal liposarcoma, treated by complete surgical resection of the tumour and right hemicolectomy and currently on follow-up for possible recurrence.

Ampullary carcinoma:Effect of preoperative biliary drainage on surgical outcome

AIM： To evaluate the influence of preoperative biliary drainage on morbidity and mortality after surgical resection for ampullary carcinoma.METHODS： We analyzed retrospectively data for 82 patients who underwent potentially curative surgery for ampullary carcinoma between September 1993 and July 2007 at the Singapore General Hospital, a tertiary referral hospital. Diagnosis of ampullary carcinoma was confirmed histologically. Thirty-five patients underwent preoperative biliary drainage （PBD group）, and 47 were not drained （non-PBD group）. The mode of biliary drainage was endoscopic retrograde cholanoiopancreatography （n = 33） or percutaneous biliary drainage （n = 2）. The following parameters were analyzed： wound infection, intra-abdominal abscess, intra-abdominal or gastrointestinal bleeding, septicemia, biliary or pancreatic leakage, pancreatitis, gastroparesis, and re-operation rate. Mortality was assessed at 30 d （hospital mortality） and also longterm. The statistical endpoint of this study was patient survival after surgery.RESULTS： The groups were well matched for demographic criteria, clinical presentation and operative characteristics, except for lower hemoglobin in the non- PBD group （10.9 ± 1.6 vs 11.8 ± 1.6 in the PBD group）.Of the parameters assessing postoperative morbidity, incidence of wound infection was significantly less in the PBD than the non-PBD group [1 （2.9%） vs 12 （25.5%）]. However, the rest of the parameters did not differ significantly between the groups, i.e. sepsis [10 （28.6%） vs 14 （29.8%）], intra-abdominal bleeding [1 （2.9%） vs 5 （10.6%）], intra-abdominal abscess [1 （2.9%） vs 8 （17%）], gastrointestinal bleeding [3 （8.6%） vs 5 （10.6%）], pancreatic leakage [2 （5.7%） vs 3 （6.4%）], biliary leakage [2 （5.7%） vs 3 （6.4%）], pancreatitis [2 （5.7%） vs 2 （4.3%）], gastroparesis [6 （17.1%） vs 10 （21.3%）], need for blood transfusion [10 （28.6%） vs 17 （36.2%）] and re-operation rate [1 （2.9%） vs 5 （10.6%）]. Using Marker Assisted Selection to Hasten Screening of Cassava Cultivars Developed through Introgression of Cassava Mosaic Disease （CMD） Resistance into Cassava Landraces in Ghana

Cassava mosaic disease （CMD）, the most important disease of cassava （Manihot esculenta Crantz） is a potential threat to Africa＇s cassava production. The disease is embedded in most landraces resulting in low yields. Host plant resistance has been found to be the best control strategy. A breeding programme using genetic hybridisation and Marker Assisted Selection was initiated in 2007 to improve the resistance levels of farmer-preferred landraces and reduce the long breeding cycle for developing improved cassava varieties. Thirty farmer-preferred landraces were selected and crossed with a high yielding and mosaic resistant cultivar （TMEI l） from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture （IITA）. The resultant progenies found to have a reasonable level of resistance （score, 1-3） to the CMD were AW 18, 273 Nyamebekyere, NK 43, AW 3, NK 26, K 25, Dabodabo, Ahwengyankwa, 674 Debor, Degarti, Agric Bankye, and NK 57. These resultant progenies were backcrossed to the resistant cultivar. The backcross one （BC l） progenies totaling 224 were screened with molecular markers that are associated to the CMD 2 gene. De-oxyribonucleic Acid （DNA） was extracted from leaves of the 224 BC1 progenies and 13 parents. Two Simple Sequence Repeats （SSR） markers （SSY28 and NSl58） and one Sequenced Characterized Amplified Region （SCAR） marker RME1, were used to screen and select for the resistant BC l progenies. Marker Assisted Selection （MAS） revealed that 82% of the genotypes had at least a marker allele for the CMD2 gene, indicating resistance. The study further revealed that by using MAS, the breeding cycle of cassava in the generation of varieties could be reduced from 8 years to 2 years. The resistant genotypes identified will be evaluated for yield and starch cooking quality in future breeding work.

Weaning and Field Survival Responses of Propagules to Propagating Structures and Seedling Types in Sheanut Production in Tropical Africa

The Shea is an economic tree found in West and Central Africa with huge industrial uses in the confectionery, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors worldwide. Its rapid multiplication has been hampered by its slow growth and long gestation period. Successes in cutting propagation have been achieved (between 60% - 80%), however weaning of the rooted cuttings for establishment has been a major challenge. Two factorial experiments were carried out in a study in 2012. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of propagating structures and seedling types on the weaning and subsequent field establishment of propagules of Shea tree for plantation establishment. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Survival of the rooted cuttings in the mist propagator was very high (93.3%) and comparable to that of the seedlings (100%). The rooted cuttings in mist propagator produced the highest number of leaves, 11 times greater than the least number of leaves produced by seedlings in the lath house. Comparing the seedling types, the rooted cuttings produced significantly greater number of leaves, 4.8 times than the normal seedlings. Rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced the biggest stem girth significantly greater than the seedlings kept in all the structures. The rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced 4.4 times bigger stem girths than the seedlings in the lath house which had the smallest stem girth. The rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced the tallest plants, 1.4 times and 1.9 times significantly taller than the seedlings in the propagating pit and lath house, respectively, which produced the shortest plants. There was a significant relationship between field survival of propagules and the month of establishment expressed as Y (percent survival) = -2844 + 0.070 × (month);P < 0.001;R2 = 0.68;n = 90. The Impact of Colonial Rule on the Gyaman State

The balkanisation of the African continent by the European powers in the nineteenth century caused the territorial division of people with the same ancestry into two or more states under different European governments. During the partition, the European powers did not take into consideration the cultural and historical boundaries of the people of Africa. In West Africa for example, the partition made some Nzema people to be found in La Cote d＇Ivoire and in Ghana. Some Dagarti are also found in Burkina Faso and while others remained in Ghana. Ewes today can be found in the three countries of Ghana, Togo and Benin. The same applies to the Bono in Gyaman. Some of the Gyaman people can be found in the Ivory Coast with others in Ghana. This article discusses Gyaman under the British and French colonial rule. It focuses on the responses of Gyaman authorities to colonialism and details out British and French colonial policies and their impact on the Gyaman people.

Antioxidant Enrichment of Baobab Fruit Pulp Treated with Oil Extracted from the Seeds

The effect of the application of oil from baobab seeds on the antioxidant capacity and stability of ascorbic acid in the fruit pulp at varying temperature were evaluated. Ascorbic acid analysis of the fruit pulp revealed that the concentration in the raw extract of the pulp sullied rapidly matched with the extract treated with the seed oil. Compared with the raw extracts the formulated fruit pulp presented the highest concentration of the total ascorbic acid when both samples were subjected to varying temperatures at extended time periods. The results clearly indicated the antioxidant enrichment property of the baobab seed oil. This study demonstrates the potential of oil derived from baobab seed as having antioxidant enrichment capacity and might be a potential ingredient in pharmaceutical cosmetics formulations and food preparations.

Rooting Response of Air-Layered Shea (<i>Vitellaria paradoxa</i>) Trees to Media and Hormonal Application under Two Different Climatic Conditions

Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn. Family;Sapotaceae) indigenous to the Sudano-sahelian zone of Africa has great economic and ecological potential and attributes. Commercial cultivation of the tree is however, hampered by the poor rooting success of its planting material with adverse consequences on field establishment and total fruit yield. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment arranged in a randomized complete block design was carried out in 2012 at Bole in the Interior Savanna agro-ecological zone. The objective was to assess the rooting success of Shea shoots by the air-layering technique using two media types (palm fibre and Sphagnum moss) and three IBA hormone concentrations (0, 5000 and 10,000 ppm) under contrasting climatic (wet and dry) conditions. Layered shoots which were sprayed with 10,000 ppm IBA and wrapped with Sphagnum moss gave significantly (P < 0.05) higher rooting success in terms of more roots per cutting (73.3%) and longer roots per cutting (9.0 cm) than palm fibre at both 5000 ppm (30.0%;3.7 cm) and 10,000 ppm (46.7%;7.9 cm) concentrations. Higher rooting success was significantly achieved in the wet season than in the dry season. Sphagnum moss treated with 10,000 ppm IBA facilitated the translocation of higher levels of sugar and total free phenol (TFP) to the base of the layered shoots which resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) higher number of roots and better roots protection from fungal infection than the other treatments. Rooting of layered shoots was affected to a greater extent by low temperatures (Rooting = 836 – 34.2 Temp (low);R2 = 82%, p < 0.001) than by high temperatures (Rooting = 5250 – 175.0 Temp (high);R2 = 64.5%, p < 0.009). Rooting of layered shoots was also significantly and negatively affected by the spread of the canopy of the selected tree such that closed canopy trees resulted in higher and better rooting that open canopy trees (Rooting = 113.87-23.697(Canopy spread);R2 = 89%, p = 0.002;n = 9). Identifying disparity in emergency department length of stay and admission likelihood

BACKGROUND: To assess whether insurance status has an effect on emergency department(ED) length of stay(LOS) and likelihood for admission or transfer to an operating ***: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of all encounters from January 2011 through October 2013 at an urban, academic trauma center. Analysis included multi-variable linear regression for ED LOS and logistic regression for the likelihood of ***: Overall, 201 535 patients met the inclusion criteria, for which the mean age was 43.8 years, 55.9% were female, 23.4% were uninsured and 8% were of non-black race. Admission rate was 24.5% and operative rate was 1.4%. After adjusting for age, sex, triage acuity and race, the presence of insurance coverage was associated with an increased ED LOS of 575(95%CI 552–598) vs. 567(95%CI 543–591) minutes(P<0.01) among admitted patients and a decreased ED LOS of 456(95%CI 381–531) vs. 499(95%CI 423–575) minutes(P<0.01) among those transferred to an operating room. Adjusting for these same predictors, insured status remained a predictor for admission(odds ratio 1.24, 95%CI 1.20–1.28, P<0.01) and a negative predictor for transfer to the operating room(odds ratio 0.84, 95%CI 0.77–0.92, P<0.01).CONCLUSION: The insured experienced a clinically insignificant increase in ED LOS when admitted and a 43-minute decrease in ED LOS when being transferred to the operating room. The insured were more likely to be admitted and less likely to be transferred to an operating room.

Genotypic Effect of Rootstock and Scion on Grafting Success and Growth of Kola (Cola nitida) Seedlings

Kola (Cola nitida) is an important economic cash crop for many West and Central African countries. It has several medicinal uses in the pharmaceutical industries and also plays a major role in traditional marriages among Islamic communities across West and Central Africa. The crop is extensively cultivated in Nigeria and Ghana. However, it exhibit signs of total and partial sterility as well as self incompatibility when propagated from seeds in most cases. Therefore, grafting is seen as a method of choice in addressing the problem stated above. Though grafting accounts for some degree of success, there is the need to assess genotypic and physiological factors that account for high or low grafting success. Genetic and physiological factors (such as rootstock age) affecting grafting success and growth in kola (C. nitida) were investigated in two separate experiments. In experiment I720 kola seedlings were raised from unselected kola nuts and sown at two monthly intervals. Four groups of seedlings (180/group) i.e. 6, 8, 10 and 12 months old were thus produced. Three different scions (A1, A12 and JB1) measuring (5-10 cm) were grafted onto the four age groups of rootstocks, namely, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. Experiment II consisted of 540 seedlings raised from three main crosses (JX1/9 × JX1/11 * B1/142 × B1/151, JX1/9 × JX1/11 * B2/177 × B2/156 and JX1/9 × JX1/11 * GX1/46 × GX1/53). Grafting was done after six months using the same set of scions as described in experiment I. Experimental design used was 3 × 4 and 3 × 3 factorial designs in completely randomised design with three replicates for experiment I and II respectively. The fixed effects were the different genotype and age of rootstock at grafting whilst the response variable was the percentage of successful grafting two months as well as growth at six monthly intervals.
