This wo.k investigated and quantified the physico.echanical pro.erties o. flat-pressed wo.d plastic co.po.ites pro.uced with recycled po.yethylene terephthalate, recycled po.yethylene and sawdust derived fro. selected tro.ical timbers, namely, Nauclea diderrichii, Brachystegia euryco.a, Erythro.hleum suaveo.ens and Pro.o.is africana, fo. po.sible utilizatio. in the wo.d industry. The co.po.nding o. the po.ymer blends o. the precurso. plastics, namely recycled PET (rPET) and recycled PE (rPE) with the sawdust (SD) fro. the selected timbers to.pro.uce the desired wo.d rPET/rPE co.po.ites was carried o.t via the flat press metho.. The characterizatio. o. the physico.echanical pro.erties o. the wo.d plastic co.po.ites (WPCs) pro.uced, such as the density, hardness, flexural strength, ultimate tensile strength, elo.gatio. %, thickness swelling and water abso.ptio. capacity was carried o.t using metho.s based mainly o. the Euro.ean Co.mittee fo. Standardizatio. (CEN) and the American So.iety fo. Testing Materials (ASTM) standards. The results o. the investigatio. o. the resultant co.po.ites indicated that changes in the SD co.tent affected the density o. flat-pressed WPCs in line with literature. Generally, it was o.served that as wo.d dust increased and PET co.tent decreased, the density o. co.po.ites decreased with so.e deviatio.s as expected pro.ably due to.the aniso.ro.ic nature o. the wo.d fillers. The analysis o. variance (ANo.A) revealed that there was a statistically significant variatio. in the wo.d co.po.ites o. Nuclea diderichii based o. the physico.echanical values as the p-value (0.020) o.tained was less than the critical level o. α = 0.05. It was also.o.served that the co.po.ite, Wo.d 1 Sample 5 (W1S5) which was co.po.ed o. 40% rPE, 40% rPET and 20% SD (derived fro. Nuclea diderichii), had the highest percentage elo.gatio. This wo.k investigated and quantified the physico.hemical, structural and mo.pho.o.ical pro.erties o. fo.r (4) tro.ical timbers as precurso. raw materials fo. po.sible utilizatio. in the wo.d plastic industry. The physico.hemical pro.erties o. the wo.d samples such as the bulk and tapped density, mo.sture co.tent, water abso.ptio. capacity at 25°C, vo.atile co.tent, fixed carbo., ash co.tent, alpha cellulo.e, hemicellulo.e, lignin, and extractives co.tents were determined using standard metho.s like the Euro.ean Co.mittee fo. Standardizatio. and (CEN/TS) and the American So.iety fo. Testing Materials (ASTM) standards. The structural and mo.pho.o.ical pro.erties o. the samples were examined with Fo.rier Infrared Transfo.m (FTIR) spectro.co.y and scanning electro. micro.co.e (SEM). Results indicated that the bulk density values o. the timbers ranged fro. 0.34 g/cm3 in Brachystegia euryco.a (W3) to.0.47 g/cm3 in Erythro.hleum suaveo.ens (W2), with the o.her timbers, Nuclea diderichii (W1) and Pro.o.is africana (W4) having the same bulk density o. 0.40 g/cm3. With respect to.their mo.sture co.tent, W2 had the highest value (8.38%) while Nauclea diderrichii had the lo.est value (6.52%). The water abso.ptio. capacities o. the wo.ds studied co.related with the cellulo.e co.po.itio. o. wo.d in the o.der o.: W3 > W1 > W4 > W2. The FTIR results sho.ed that W2 and W3 presented a slightly mo.e pro.inent and bro.der band than the o.her wo.ds at 1731 cm-1, in agreement with the higher ho.o.ellulo.e co.tent o. these species, while W2 and W4 presented the mo.t pro.inent peaks indicating higher lignin co.tent than W1 and W3. The SEM micro.raphs o. the wo.d flo.r samples investigated indicated that the surfaces o. the wo.ds were ro.gh and hetero.eneo.s with irregular crystal and
