Genomic resources for the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens： Transcriptome pyrosequencing and microarray design

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens is a pest of cultivated rice through- out Asia and is controlled using insecticides and/or resistant rice varieties. This species has developed resistance to many classes of insecticide and biotypes have developed that are vir- ulent against formerly resistant rice cultivars. Insects use a suite of detoxification enzymes, including cytochrome P450s, glutathione S-transferases and carboxyl/cholinesterases to defend themselves against plant secondary metabolites and pesticides. Pyrosequencing on the Roche 454-fLX platform was used to produce a substantial expressed sequence tag （EST） dataset to complement the existing Sanger sequenced ESTs in GenBank. A total of 78 959 reads were combined with the 37 392 publically available Sanger ESTs; these assembled into 8 911 contigs and 10 620 singletons. Analysis of the distribution of tenta- tive unique genes （TUGs） with the gene ontology for biological processes and molecular functions suggests that the 454 and Sanger EST assembly is broadly representative of the N. lugens transcriptome. The brown planthopper transcriptome was found to contain 31 TUGs encoding P450s, nine encoding glutathione S-transferases and 26 encoding car- boxyl/cholinesterases and many of these are putatively involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics. The Agilent eArray platform was used to construct an oligonucleotide mi- croarray populated with probes for ~ 19 000 unigene sequences, including all those known to encode detoxification enzymes. The genomic resources developed in this study will be useful to the community studying this crop pest and will help elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying insecticide resistance and planthopper adaptation to resistant rice cultivars.

Cryogenic nanosecond and picosecond high average and peak power(HAPP) pump lasers for ultrafast applications

Using cryogenic laser technology, it is now possible to design and demonstrate lasers that have concomitant high average and peak powers, with near-diffraction-limited beam quality. We refer to these new laser systems as HAPP lasers. In this paper, we review important laser crystal materials properties at cryogenic temperature, with an emphasis on Yb lasers, and discuss the important design considerations, including the laser-induced damage threshold, nonlinear effects and thermal effects. A comprehensive model is presented to describe diode pulsed pumping with arbitrary duration and repetition rate, and is used with the frantz–Nodvik equation to describe, to first order, the performance of HAPP laser systems. A computer code with representative results is also described.

Analysis of the Anomalous Phenomenon in the Retarding Potential Analyzer Measurements

An anomalous phenomenon was observed in the retarding potential analyzer （RPA） measurements of the energy of the ion beam from an 8 cm argon ion source. The current-voltage （Ⅰ- Ⅴ） curve, which should theoretically descend, went up as the ion retarding potential was increased. Various explanations, such as the Townsend discharge theory and secondary electron emission etc. were proposed but denied by the theory application condition or the experiment results. An angle of about -10° was found between the axes of the ion beam and the RPA according to the contours of the ion beam density and direction. The particle simulation and experiment of the sum of the collector and wall current were conducted at different incident ion angles. The trends of the Ⅰ- Ⅴ curve in simulation results conformed with the experimental results in most cases. The ion trajectories were simulated at different retarding potentials with an incident angle of -10°. According ：to these results, the reason for the anomalous phenomenon is that when there is a specific angle between the axes of the ion beam and the RPA, more ions are repelled from the vicinity of the ion retarding grid to avoid striking on the grid as the ion retarding potential increases. These redundant ions reach the plate and thus lead to the formation of an ascending Ⅰ- Ⅴ curve.

Strategies to enhance monoclonal antibody uptake and distribution in solid tumors

Hydration Effect on Equations of State for Minerals in the Peridotite System:Implication for Geotherms in the Mantle

Water in the deep Earth’s interior has important and profound impacts on the geodynamical properties at high-temperature(T)and high-pressure(P)conditions.A series of dense hydrous Mg-silicate(DHMS)phases are generated from dehydration of serpentines in subduction slabs below the lithosphere,including phase A,chondrodite,clinohumite,phase E,superhydrous phase B and phase *** the other hand,olivine and its high-P polymorphs of wadsleyite and ringwoodite are dominant nominally anhydrous minerals(NAMs)in the upper mantle and transition zone,which could contain significant amount of water in the forms of hydroxyl group(OH-)*** water solubilities in wadsleyite and ringwoodite are up to about 3 weight percent(wt.%),making the transition zone a most important layer for water storage in the *** can significantly affect the pressure-volumetemperature equations of state(P-V-T EOSs)for the DHMS and NAM phases,including the thermal expansivities and isothermal bulk *** this work,we collected the reported datasets for the DHMS and NAM phases,and reconstruct internally consistent ***,we further evaluated the thermodynamic Grüneisen parameters,which are fundamental for constraining the temperature distribution in an isentropic process,such as mantle *** adiabatic temperature profiles are computed for these minerals in the geological settings of normal mantle and subduction zone,and our calculation indicates that temperature is the dominant factor in determining the gradient of a geotherm,rather than the mineralogical composition.

Lithium-sulphur(Li-S)batteries are currently considered as next-generation battery *** is an attractive positive electrode for lithium metal batteries,mainly due to its high capacity(1675 m Ah g^(-1))and high specific energy(2600 Wh kg^(-1)).The electrochemical reaction of lithium with sulphur in non-aqueous electrolytes results in the formation of electrolyte soluble intermediate *** dissolved polysulphides shuttle to the anode and get reduced at the anode resulting in Li metal *** solubility of polysulphide gradually reduces the amount of sulphur in the cathode,thereby limiting the cycle life of Li-S *** strategies have been proposed to improve the cycling stability of Li-S batteries.A unique approach to eliminate the polysulphide shuttle is to use ultramicroporous carbon(UMC)as a host for *** pore size of UMC which is below 7A,is the bottleneck for carbonate solvents to access sulphur/polysulphides confined in the pores,thereby preventing the polysulphide *** perspective article will emphasise the role of UMC host in directing the lithiation mechanism of sulphur and in inhibiting polysulphide dissolution,including the resulting parasitic reaction on the lithium ***,the challenges that need to be addressed by UMC-S based Li-S batteries,and the strategies to realise high power density,high Coulombic efficiency,and resilient Li-S batteries will be discussed.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogeneous group of neuro-developmental disorders that are among the most genetically heritable behavioral disorders.[1] ASD have attracted increasing attention from researchers and public-health agencies worldwide, particularly in Western high-income nations, where substantial increases in the prevalence of ASD have been reported since the 1990s, and where strong advocacy by families of persons with autism has resulted in increased funding for research into the causes of these devastating *** fewer data on ASD prevalence are available from Asia than from Europe and North ***, the report in the previous issue by Wan and colleagues,[2] of a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of prevalence estimates for ASD in China's Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, is a welcome contribution to the international *** results of the study, which focused on analyses of populations f age, highlight the urgent need for large methodologically rigorous studies of the prevalence of ASD in Han Chinese populations-an ethnic group that includes approximately 20% of the world's population.

fISH ASSEMBLAGE RESPONSES TO DIffERENT SECONDARY CHANNEL DESIGNS IN THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER,U.S.A.:A TEMPLATE fOR RIVER RESTORATION

The lower Mississippi River(LMR) has been heavily modified for multiple human purposes such as navigation, flood control, and bank stabilization. However, the LMR simultaneously supports a diverse fish fauna that includes recreational and commercial fisheries. Due to river training and diversion structures constructed during the past 80 years, the historic characteristics of the LMR have been drastically altered and have likely influenced fishes and fisheries in the system. One common restoration measure used throughout the LMR has been to "notch" wing-dike structures that close secondary(side) river channels. Dike notching allows year-round flows through secondary channels, which enhances habitat diversity and promotes biological productivity at the ecosystem scale. Although notching is presumed good for LMR fishes and other biota, few studies have examined its effects on fish assemblages. In this study, fish assemblages were sampled at seven LMR secondary channels spanning from river kilometer(rkm) 628(Louisiana-Mississippi, U.S.A.) upstream to rkm 1504(Missouri-Kentucky, U.S.A.). four secondary channels were termed "permanent"(i.e.,with notched dikes) while three secondary channels were termed "temporary"(i.e., without notched dikes).fishes were sampled by boat-mounted electrofishing conducted during falling and low stages from1995—1997. fish assemblages differed between permanent and temporary secondary channels, and varied somewhat between falling and low stages. Gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum), threadfin shad(D. petenense), and white bass(Morone chrysops) demonstrated consistent preferences for low-current conditions associated with temporary secondary channels. Conversely, blue catfish(Ictalurus furcatus), flathead catfish(Pylodictis olivaris), and freshwater drum(Aplodinotus grunniens) were more associated with permanent secondary channels. future restoration strategies in the LMR should consider dike notching and resultant maintenance of permanent seconda
