Mental health status in veterans residing in rural versus non-rural areas: results from the veterans’ health study

Background: The majority of Veterans Affair(VA) hospitals are in urban areas. We examined whether veterans residing in rural areas have lower mental health service use and poorer mental health ***: Veterans with at least 1 warzone deployment in central and northeastern Pennsylvania were randomly selected for an interview. Mental health status, including posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), major depression, alcohol abuse and mental health global severity, were assessed using structured interviews. Psychiatric service use was based on self-reported utilization in the past 12 months. Results were compared between veterans residing in rural and non-rural areas. Data were also analyzed using multivariate logistic regression to minimize the influence by confounding ***: A total of 1730 subjects(55% of the eligible veterans) responded to the survey and 1692 of them had complete geocode information. Those that did not have this information(n=38), were excluded from some analyses. Veterans residing in rural areas were older, more often of the white race, married, and experienced fewer stressful events. In comparison to those residing in non-rural areas, veterans residing in rural areas had lower global mental health severity scores;they also had fewer mental health visits. In multivariate logistic regression, rural residence was associated with lower service use, but not with PTSD, major depression, alcohol abuse, and global mental health severity score after adjusting confounding factors(e.g., age, gender, marital status and education).Conclusions: Rural residence is associated with lower mental health service use, but not with poor mental health in veterans with former warzone deployment, suggesting rural residence is possibly protective.

越来越多的人已意识到,应把病人意见作为医疗质量监控系统的组成部分。本文描述了关于病人如何看待医疗质量的一次调查结果。文中分析了涉及美国40个市场区域的2万人对155所设有内外科的短期住院医院的全面质量评阶。初步分析发现,公众评价较高的医院是非农村的、大型的、能提供第三级医疗的、有教学的、机构利用水平高的、人员素质好的和死亡率较低的医院。多元回归分析发现,用于分析的16个自变量可以解释公众质量意识的50%,其中与质量评价显著相关的因素有医疗级别、机构利用水平、雇员平均工资和教学情况。利用16个变量还建立了一组判别函数方程,可以识别出公众认为的优质医院的80%。这些发现提示,用病人看法监控医疗质量具有重要价值。

High Order Conservative Semi-Lagrangian Scheme for the BGK Model of the Boltzmann Equation

In this paper,we present a conservative semi-Lagrangian finite-difference scheme for the BGK *** semi-Lagrangian finite difference schemes,coupled with an L-stable treatment of the collision term,allow large time steps,for all the range of Knudsen number[17,27,30].Unfortunately,however,such schemes are not *** of conservation is analyzed in detail,and two main sources are identified as its ***,when using classical continuous Maxwellian,conservation error is negligible only if velocity space is resolved with sufficiently large number of grid ***,for a small number of grid points in velocity space such error is not negligible,because the parameters of the Maxwellian do not coincide with the discrete ***,the non-linear reconstruction used to prevent oscillations destroys the translation invariance which is at the basis of the conservation properties of the *** a consequence the schemes show a wrong shock speed in the limit of small Knudsen *** treat the first problem and ensure machine precision conservation of mass,momentum and energy with a relatively small number of velocity grid points,we replace the continuous Maxwellian with the discrete Maxwellian introduced in[22].The second problem is treated by implementing a conservative correction procedure based on the flux difference form as in[26].In this way we can construct conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes which are Asymptotic Preserving(AP)for the underlying Euler limit,as the Knudsen number *** effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by extensive numerical tests.

In this article I argue how in the history of philosophy the meaning of the term“to be”was disputed over by two research programmes:the Platonic-Aristotelian one up to Heidegger and the Pythagorean-Parmenidean-Democritean one through Hobbes and Boole up to Peano.I call the first of“grammatical”type,the other of“linguistic algebraic”*** in the grammatical classifications,in the former,formal or linguistic distinctions are mistaken for distinctions of logical type,or even of real or,as it is said,metaphysical type;hence its empty philosophical *** the latter,the term“to be”is taken in its merely linguistic meaning to build the science of reality,which should be known starting from rational principles,the“ideas”,as Democritus called them,through an adequate language.

During May 8-10,2019,the International Workshop on Efficient High-Order Time Discretization Methods for Partial Differential Equations took place in Villa Orlandi,Anacapri,Italy,a Congress Center of the University of Naples Federico *** 40 senior researchers,young scholars,and *** attended this *** purpose of this event was to explore recent trends and directions in the area of time discretization for the numerical solution of evolutionary partial differential equations with particular application to high-order methods for hyperbolic systems with source and advection-diffusion-reaction equations,and with special emphasis on efficient time-stepping methods such as implicit-explicit(IMEX),semi-implicit and strong stability preserving(SSP)time *** present focused section entitled“Efficient High-Order Time Discretization Methods for Partial Differential Equations”in Communications on Applied Mathematics and Computation(CAMC)consists of five regularly reviewed manuscripts,which were selected from submissions of works presented during the *** thank all the authors of these contributions,and hope that the readers are interested in the topics,techniques and methods,and results of these *** also want to thank the CAMC journal editorial staff as well as all the referees for their contributions during the review and publication processes of this focused section.

The Traditions of Thought Between Progress and Reaction. Cicero: An Interpreter and a Latin Creator of the Aristotelian Platonic Tradition of Thought

Farington’s interpretation of the philosophies of Plato and Cicero as reactionary philosophies is *** the light of our interpretative category,such as that of Traditions of Thought,understood as complex rational,historical constructions,within which metaphysical and epistemological principles are mediated with socio-economic-political-cultural conflicts,all denominated as ideologies,instead it is believed that scientific theories are not actually progressive or regressive,but rather the ideologies,when they interpret the concepts of scientific fact,scientific theory and,more strongly,that of philosophy,within general conceptions of the *** the light of our interpretative category,they thus appear more than regressive philosophers instead of regressive ideologues,if we consider that the philosopher moves within the narrower fields of the so-called metaphysics and *** also appears to be the great Latin creator of a way of understanding philosophy and its history with the dominant triad Socrates-Plato-Aristotele in *** this must be considered within my broader historical-philosophical-epistemological elaboration,enclosed in my published books and papers,cited in references.

The Italic School in Astronomy： From Pythagoras to Archimedes

It is argued that it has not yet been able to value the historical, philosophical and epistemological travail, represented by the fifth and fourth centuries BC of the ancient Greek world, which preceded the highest scientific heritage, represented by the so-called golden age of Euclid, Archimedes and Apollonius, III-II century BC. Well, it is believed that with our complex concept of tradition of thought within which we insert not only epistemological concepts but also philosophical principles, historical and social frameworks, in stasis or in strong movement, processed by us, it is possible better interpret that happy moment of scientific constructions of the third and second century BC, as a result of the valorization of the deep travail and serious battle that preceded it between the fourth and fifth century BC. It is investigated in particular in our paper the development of astronomical thought between the fifth and fourth centuries BC, in the ancient Greek thought, and at last a particular presumed criticism by Archimedes in his Sandreckoner to Aristarchus.
