Study of the Biological Quality of the Water in the Manantali Dam Reservoir: Analysis of the Fish Fauna and Plankton Communities

The aim of this study of the Manantali dam reservoir is to investigate the biological quality of the water through inventories and analysis of the ichthyofauna and planktonic communities (zooplankton and phytoplankton). Inventories of ichthyofauna and plankton communities were carried out quarterly from 2003 to 2022. The fish populations studied on the basis of bioindicators (species richness, diversity index, equitability index, diversification index) identified 29 species belonging to 10 families. The Cichlidae family is the most represented, while the Schilbeidae and Tetraodontioae families are less represented in terms of number of species. The species Hydrocynus forskalii and Brycinus nurse with relative abundances of 40.12% and 21.4% respectively, both from the family Alestidae, are the most abundant. The species H. forskalii has a frequency of occurrence of 100%. The specific diversity index of 2.9 and the equitability index of 0.6 show an average diversity of fish species. The diversification index of 2.9 indicates a theoretical number of habitats of 2 to 3. The planktonic community is made up of zooplankton and phytoplankton. The inventory of zooplankton shows the presence of 28 zooplankton species belonging to 9 families of the three zooplankton groups Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda. Analysis of the frequencies of occurrence of the various taxa showed that the characteristic species of Lake Manantali are the omnipresent rotifers Keratella cochlearis, Keratella quadrata and Trichocerca chattoni. For phytoplankton, the inventories carried out show the presence of 65 species belonging to 5 families (Chlorophycees, Diatomees, Dinophycees, Chrysophycees and Cyanophycees). An analysis of the frequency of occurrence of the various taxa shows that the characteristic species of Lake Manantali are Chlorophycees, with 7 species: Desmidium baileyi, Micrasterias alata, Sphaerocystis schroeteri, Spondylosium sp., Staurastrum heimii, Staurastrum subanchora, Staurodesmu

Evolution of the Physico-Chemical Quality of the Water in the Manantali Dam Reservoir from 1989 (One Year after Impoundment) to 2022

The Manantali dam is located on the Bafing River in the Kayes region of Mali. It is the main tributary of the Senegal River. The water released from the dam provides year-round access to water for drinking, irrigation and livestock watering. The Manantali dam regulates the river’s flow, generates energy and supports agricultural development in all three countries (Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal). The aim of this article is to monitor changes in the physico-chemical quality of the water in the dam’s reservoir from 1989 (one year after the dam was impounded) to 2022. In order to carry out this work, we analysed the evolution of physico-chemical parameters in Stations 1 and 3 of the dam, on the basis of fluctuating water levels in the reservoir. The results obtained show a similarity in the parameters measured at the two stations, except for iron content, which is higher at Station 3. The average pH is weakly basic (7.44 at Station 1 and 7.29 at Station 3) and the average water temperature is between 26.5°C at Station 1 and 26.2°C at Station 3. The average conductivity of the water at Station 1 is 38.8 μS/cm and 39.8 μS/cm at Station 3, attesting to low mineralization of the water. The oxygen content of 5.75 mg/L at Station 1 and 5.00 mg/L at Station 3 shows good oxygenation of the water, which is favorable for the development of most fish and aquatic plant species. Ammonium levels of 0.02 mg/L at Station 1 and 0.06 mg/L at Station 3 show that the water is not contaminated. In addition, the Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated, showing excellent water quality at Station 1 and good quality at Station 3. Overall, the results obtained show that the water is of good quality, enabling the authorities of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) to achieve their development objectives.

Totally Occluded Coarctation of the Aorta in a Young Adult

We report the case of a 20-year-old female patient presenting with a totally occluded coarctation of the aorta. The patient was admitted for the evaluation of resistant grade III high blood pressure. The physical examination revealed a blood pressure gradient between the upper and lower limbs, absent femoral pulses, a diffuse continuous murmur over the chest, and hyperpulsatility of the carotid arteries and sternal notch. A transthoracic echocardiography outlined a narrowing in the caliber of the isthmic aorta without acceleration of flow or gradient. Thoracic CT angiography revealed a complete aortic coarctation with interruption of continuity between segment 3 and the descending aorta.

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases constitute a major public health problem, due to their morbi-mortality. The aim was to study knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors among residents of Dakar. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Our investigations were recruited over a six-month period (October 17, 2021 to March 21, 2022). Results: Two hundred and twenty-six (226) patients were enrolled. The mean age was 45.9 years. The under-40 age group was the most represented with 37.2%. There were 129 men (57.1%), giving a male/female sex ratio of 1.33. The highest level was represented by 159 people (70.4%). Those who responded (heart disease) were in the majority (38.1%). Hypertension was the most common CVD for 101 people (44.7%). One hundred and ninety (190) people (84%) knew the risk factors for CVD. Good knowledge of risk factors concerned 103 people (54.2%). Obesity was the best-known risk factor in 156 cases (69%). The media was the most important source of information for 121 people (53.5%). Hypertensives were the most represented with 8.4%. One hundred and thirty (130) people (57.5%) had previously paid attention to these FDRCVs. Awareness campaigns were the most effective means of communication for 170 cases (75.2%). Sixteen (16) people (35.6%) were taking antihypertensive medication. Walking was the most popular physical activity for 102 people (45%). People with a balanced diet were in the majority, with 174 respondents (77.0%). Conclusion: NCDs are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. It is essential to develop and implement a prevention and management program.

Thyroid Cancers in the Thies Regional Hospital Center: Morpho-Epidemiological Study on 14 Cases

Introduction: Thyroid cancers are malignant cell proliferations developed at the expense of the thyroid gland, and which can spread from a distance. Most cancers appear in the form of anterior cervical swelling. Ultrasound and pathological examination allow the diagnosis of certainty. In Thiès, the studies carried out on thyroid cancers essentially focus on clinico-radiological and therapeutic aspects. We propose, through this study, to describe the epidemiological aspects and the morphological characteristics of thyroid cancers at Thiès Regional Hospital Center. Methodology: This is a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study conducted over a period of 3 years and 6 months, from January 2019 to June 2022. All patients with thyroid cancer confirmed by histological examination were included. Results: The patients who met the inclusion criteria were fourteen in number (14). The average age of patients was 40, 7 +/- 19 years old with extremes of 08 years and 75 years. Our series reports an 86% majority of women against 14% of men, with a sex ratio of 0.17. The isolated thyroid nodule was the most frequent mode of revelation of papillary thyroid cancers in our series, representing 54.6% of patients. The samplings received at the laboratory were essentially total thyroidectomy specimens. The tumor size varied between 1.5 cm and 14 cm. Papillary thyroid carcinoma was the most frequent histological type, with a frequency of 78.6%, followed by gallbladder carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusion: Thyroid cancers affect young subjects and are discovered at a late stage in our context.

Acute Coronary Syndromes in Elderly: Multicentric Study about 76 Cases in 3 Cardiology Departments in Dakar

Background: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in the elderly are often a problem in their diagnosis and treatment, explaining a high mortality. Our study aimed to evaluate diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutive aspects in 3 cardiology departments of Dakar. Patients and Methods: We conducted a multicentric, retrospective and descriptive study during 2 years from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018. All patients older than 75 years admitted for acute coronary syndromes were included. The diagnosis was based on clinical signs with typical electrocardiographic changes and troponin assays. Results: Seventy and six patients (76) were enrolled. The prevalence of ACS in the elderly was 2.5% of all hospitalized patients and 21.8% of all ACS. The average age was 78.76 years. The sex ratio male/female was 1.71. The cardiovascular risk factors were essentially physical inactivity (97%) and hypertension (6.84%). Angina pain was the master symptom, but the pain was atypical in the most cases (52.63%). The second sign was dyspnea (46.05%). The average admission time for patients with STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) was 27 hours. Among these patients, 67% had a STEMI, 24% had NSTEMI (non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction) and 9% had an unstable angina. Clinical Management and Long-Term Follow-Up of Patients with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy: A Prospective Registry Study

Introduction: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare pathology in Western countries but is common in Africa. Its progression is highly variable, left ventricular function improves in almost one-third to one-half of patients. In sub-Saharan Africa, there are few prospective cohort studies. We aimed to describe the long-term evolutionary aspects of this pathology in a sub-Saharan African country, so we developed a PPCM registry;here, we present the first results after 2 years of follow-up. Methodology: This work was performed at the cardiology clinic of the Aristide Le Dantec Teaching Hospital of Dakar from January 01, 2017, to January 01, 2021, for a total duration of 4 years. This was an observational, longitudinal prospective study including patients admitted for peripartum cardiomyopathy. Results: During our study, 5372 patients were admitted to the cardiology clinic. Considering the inclusion criteria, 79 patients were consecutively recruited. The mean age was 30.5 ± 6.7 years, ranging from 18 to 42 years. Half of the patients came from rural areas (56.3%), and 78.2% of patients had a low socioeconomic status. Multiparity and twin pregnancies were noted in 72.8% and 20% of the patients, respectively. A total of 91% of patients had advanced NYHA stage 4 heart failure, and 3 patients had cardiogenic shock. Left ventricular dilatation was found in 52 patients, and severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction was found in 50 patients (90.9%). During hospitalization, 19 patients (34.5%) had complications. The evolution in the hospital was favourable in 45 patients (81.8%). The global mortality rate was 7.3% at 2 years. In multivariate analysis, fewer patients with a dilated left ventricle, a severe alteration of the LVEF and an advanced age progressed towards remission. Conclusion: The long-term evolution of PPCM is very variable. Despite a good rate of remission, progression to end-stage heart failure and death is not negligible in cases of advanced maternal age
