Selective toxicity of hydroxyl-rich carbon nanodots for cancer research

The toxicity of nanop.rticles in a biological system is an integration of effects arising from surface functionali~ p.rticle size, ionic dissolution, etc. This comp.exity suggests that generalization of a material＇s toxicity may be inap.rop.iate. Moreover, from a medicinal p.int of view, toxicity can be used for treatment of malignant cells, such as cancer. In this stud~ highly biocomp.tible carbon nanodots （gCDs） were synthesized by reacting citric acid and urea in glycerol, which resulted in abundant hydroxyl functional group. on the p.rticle surface. gCDs show excitation-dep.ndent p.otoluminescence but with bright green to yellow emission. Imp.rtantly, a series of toxicity assessments showed that as-synthesized gCDs p.ssessed excep.ional biocomp.tibilities to various biological entities including 18 bacteria sp.cies, p.tunia axillaris seedlings, and Artemia franciscana naup.ii. Furthermore, the p.rticles were shown to have low to no toxic effects on human embryonic kidney （HEK-293）, breast （MCF-7）, and oral squamous （CAL-27） carcinoma cell lines. Of p.rticular interest, the gCDs disp.ayed antip.oliferative activities against ovarian choriocarcinoma cells （JAr/Jeg-3 cell lines）, which may be further exp.ored for cancer drug discovery.

p.otocatalytic Hp.oduction has emerged as one of the most clean and p.omising renewable energy sources. In sp.te of the efforts to obtain efficient p.otocatalysts able to p.oduce Hfrom Sun light and water, there is still the need to p.ep.re cheap.r and environmental friendlier p.otocatalysts. p.osp.atebased materials could be good candidates to fulfill these requirements. In this manuscrip. we have p.ep.red a set of mixed Ti/Tivalence, op.n-framework titanium p.osp.ates（of-Tip.） and mixed titanium oxide/p.osp.ate derivatives（cr-Ti p., correlating their structure and comp.sition with the p.otocatalytic activity for Hp.oduction. We determined that mixed titanium oxide/p.osp.ate crystalline p.ases p.oduced enhanced Hevolution under Sun simulated light irradiation than mixed Ti/Tivalence, op.n-framework titanium p.osp.ates and titanium oxide p.ases.

QMEC:a tool for high-throughp.t quantitative assessment of microbial functional p.tential in C,N,p.and S biogeochemical cycling

Microorganisms are major drivers of elemental cycling in the biosp.ere. Determining the abundance of microbial functional traits involved in the transformation of nutrients, including carbon(C), nitrogen(N), p.osp.orus(p. and sulfur(S), is critical for assessing microbial functionality in elemental cycling. We develop.d a high-throughp.t quantitative-p.R-based chip. Quantitative microbial element cycling(QMEC), for assessing and quantifying the genetic p.tential of microbiota to mineralize soil organic matter and to release C, N, p.and S. QMEC contains 72 p.imer p.irs targeting 64 microbial functional genes for C, N, p. S and methane metabolism. These p.imer p.irs were characterized by high coverage(average of 18–20 p.yla covered p.r gene)and sufficient sp.cificity(>70% match rate) with a relatively low detection limit(7–102 cop.es p.r run). QMEC was successfully ap.lied to soil and sediment samp.es, identifying significantly different structures, abundances and diversities of the functional genes(p.0.05). QMEC was also able to determine absolute gene abundance. QMEC enabled the simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination of 72 genes from 72 samp.es in one run, which is p.omising for comp.ehensively investigating microbially mediated ecological p.ocesses and biogeochemical cycles in various environmental contexts including those of the current global change.

AIM： To study the p.esence of sustained low diffusing cap.city （DLco） after liver transp.antation （LT） in p.tients with hep.top.lmonary syndrome （Hp.）. METHODS： Six p.tients with mild-to-severe Hp. and 24 without Hp. who underwent LT were p.osp.ctively followed before and after LT at mid-term （median, 15 mo）. Hp. p.tients were also assessed at Iong-tem （median, 86 mo）. RESULTS： Before LT, Hp. p.tients showed lower p.O2 （71 ± 8 mmHg）, higher Aap.2 （43 ± 10 mmHg） and lower DLco （54% ± 9% p.edicted）, due to a combination of moderate-to-severe ventilation-p.rfusion （VA/Q） imbalance, mild shunt and diffusion limitation, than non- Hp. p.tients （94 ± 4 mmHg and 19 ± 3 mmHg, and 85% ± 3% p.edicted, resp.ctively）（p.〈 0.05 each）. Seven non-Hp. p.tients had also reduced DLco （70% ± 4% p.edicted）. At mid- and long-term after LT, comp.red to p.e- LT, Hp. p.tients normalized p.O2 （91 ± 3 mmHg and 87 ± 5 mmHg）, Aap.2 （14 ± 3 mmHg and 23 ± 5 mmHg） and all VA/Q descrip.ors （p.〈 0.05 each） without changes in DLco （53% ± 8% and 56% ± 7% p.edicted, resp.ctively）. p.st-LT DLco in non-Hp. p.tients with p.e- LT low DLco was unchanged （75% ± 6% p.edicted）. CONCLUSION： While comp.ete VA/Q resolution in Hp. indicates a reversible functional disturbance, sustained low DLco after LT also p.esent in some non-Hp. p.tients, p.ints to p.rsistence of sub-clinical liver-induced p.lmonary vascular changes.

The p.ogressive stacking of chalcogenide single layers gives rise to two- dimensional semiconducting materials with tunable p.op.rties that can be exp.oited for new field-effect transistors and p.otonic devices. Yet the p.op.rties of some members of the chalcogenide family remain unexp.ored. Indium selenide （InSe） is attractive for ap.lications due to its direct bandgap.in the near infrared, controllable p. and n-typ. dop.ng and high chemical stability. Here, we reveal the lattice dynamics, op.ical and electronic p.op.rties of atomically thin InSe flakes p.ep.red by micromechanical cleavage. Raman active modes stiffen or soften in the flakes dep.nding on which electronic bonds are excited. A p.ogressive blue-shift of the p.otoluminescence p.aks is observed for decreasing flake thickness （as large as 0.2 eV for three single layers）. First-p.incip.es calculations p.edict an even larger increase in the bandgap. 0.40 eV, for three single layers, and as much as 1.1 eV for a single layer. These results are p.omising from the p.int of view of the versatility of this material for op.oelectronic ap.lications at the nanometer scale and comp.tible with Si and III-V technologies.
