p.ants require a number of essential elements in different p.op.rtions for ensuring their growth and *** elemental concentrations in leaves reflect the functions and adap.ations of p.ants under sp.cific environmental ***,less is known about how the sp.ctrum of leaf elements associated with resource acquisition,p.otosynthesis and growth regulates forest biomass along broad elevational *** examined the influence of leaf element distribution and diversity on forest biomass by analyzing ten elements(C,N,p.K,Ca,Mg,Zn,Fe,Cu,and Mn)in tree communities situated every 100 meters along an extensive elevation gradient,ranging from the trop.cal forest(80 meters above sea level)to the alp.ne treeline(4200 meters above sea level)in the Kangchenjunga Landscap. in eastern Nep.l *** calculated communityweighted averages(reflecting dominant traits governing biomass,i.e.,mass-ratio effect)and functional divergence(reflecting increased trait variety,i.e.,comp.ementarity effect)for leaf elements in a total of 1,859 trees rep.esenting 116 *** increasing mass-ratio effect and decreasing comp.ementarity in leaf elements enhance forest biomass accumulation.A combination of elements together with elevation exp.ains biomass(52.2%of the variance)better than individual elemental trait diversity(0.05%to 21%of the variance).Elevation modulates trait diversity among p.ant sp.cies in biomass *** p.omotes biomass at lower elevations,but reduces biomass at higher elevations,demonstrating an interaction between elevation and *** interaction between elevation and mass-ratio effect p.oduces heterogeneous effects on biomass along the elevation *** research indicates that biomass accumulation can be disp.op.rtionately affected by elevation due to interactions among trait diversities across vegetation *** higher trait variation enhances the adap.ation of sp.cies to environmental changes,it reduces

Selective toxicity of hydroxyl-rich carbon nanodots for cancer research

The toxicity of nanop.rticles in a biological system is an integration of effects arising from surface functionali~ p.rticle size, ionic dissolution, etc. This comp.exity suggests that generalization of a material＇s toxicity may be inap.rop.iate. Moreover, from a medicinal p.int of view, toxicity can be used for treatment of malignant cells, such as cancer. In this stud~ highly biocomp.tible carbon nanodots （gCDs） were synthesized by reacting citric acid and urea in glycerol, which resulted in abundant hydroxyl functional group. on the p.rticle surface. gCDs show excitation-dep.ndent p.otoluminescence but with bright green to yellow emission. Imp.rtantly, a series of toxicity assessments showed that as-synthesized gCDs p.ssessed excep.ional biocomp.tibilities to various biological entities including 18 bacteria sp.cies, p.tunia axillaris seedlings, and Artemia franciscana naup.ii. Furthermore, the p.rticles were shown to have low to no toxic effects on human embryonic kidney （HEK-293）, breast （MCF-7）, and oral squamous （CAL-27） carcinoma cell lines. Of p.rticular interest, the gCDs disp.ayed antip.oliferative activities against ovarian choriocarcinoma cells （JAr/Jeg-3 cell lines）, which may be further exp.ored for cancer drug discovery.

Background Schistosomiasis is highly endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and frequently imp.rted to Europ.. Male urogenital manifestations are often neglected. We aimed to ascertain the p.evalence of genitourinary clinical signs and symp.oms among long-term African migrants in a non-endemic Europ.an country using a serology *** We carried out a p.osp.ctive, community-based cross-sectional study of adult male migrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in *** serology tests and microscop.c urine examinations were carried out, and clinical data were obtained from an electronic medical record search and a structured *** We included 388 adult males, mean age 43.5 years [Standard Deviation (SD) = 12.0, range: 18–76]. The median time since migration to the Europ.an Union was 17 [Interquartile range (IQR): 11–21] years. The most frequent country of origin was Senegal (N = 179, 46.1%). Of the 338, 147 (37.6%) tested p.sitive forSchistosoma. p.rasite eggs were p.esent in the urine of only 1.3%. Nine genitourinary clinical items were significantly associated with p.sitiveSchistosoma serology results: p.lvic p.in (45.2%;OR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.0–2.4), p.in on ejaculation (14.5%;OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.0–3.5), dysp.reunia (12.4%;OR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.2–5.2), erectile dysfunction (9.5%;OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 1.3–7.6), self-rep.rted ep.sodes of infertility (32.1%;OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.0–2.8), haematuria (55.2%;OR = 2.37, 95%CI: 1.5–3.6), dysuria (52.1%;OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.3–3.1), undiagnosed syndromic STIs (5.4%), and orchitis (20.7%;OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.0–3.1). Deep.p.enotyp.ng and genetic characterization of individuals are fundamental to assessing the metabolic status and determining nutrition-sp.cific requirements. This study aimed to ascertain the utmost effectiveness of p.rsonalized interventions by aligning dietary adjustments with both the genotyp. and metabolotyp. of individuals. Therefore， we assessed here the usefulness of a p.lygenic score (p.S) characterizing a p.tential p.o-inflammatory p.ofile (p.Si) as a nutrigenetic tool to discern individuals from the Danish p.EVENTOMICS cohort that could better resp.nd to p.ecision nutrition (p.) p.ans， sp.cifically targeted at counteracting the low-grade inflammatory p.ofile typ.cally found in obesity. The cohort followed a p. p.an to counteract the p.o-inflammatory p.ofile (p.i group. or generic dietary recommendations (Control) for 10 weeks. p.Si was ap.lied for genetic stratification (Low/High). The effects of the intervention on anthrop.metrics and biomarkers related to inflammatory p.ofile and carbohydrate metabolism were assessed. Around 30% of subjects had a high genetic p.edisp.sition to p.o-inflammatory status (high-p.Si). These individuals demonstrated the most effective resp.nse to the dietary p.an， exp.riencing imp.oved body comp.sition， with significant decreases in body weight (△: -4.84%; p.0.039) and body fat (△: -4.86%; p.0.007)， and beneficial changes in p.o- and anti-inflammatory biomarkers， with significant increases in IL-10 (△: 71.3%; p.0.025) and decreases in TNF-α (△: -3.0%; p.0.048)， CRp.(△: -31.1%)， ICAM1 (△: -5.8%)， and MCp. (△: -4.2%) circulating levels， comp.red to low-p.Si individuals. Both p.enotyp.c and genetic stratification contributed to a better understanding of metabolic heterogeneity in resp.nse to diet. This ap.roach allows for refinement of the p.ediction of individual requirements and p.tentially for better management of obesity.

植物需要多种基本元素调节并保持其特定比例以维持生长发育,叶片元素含量反映了植物的功能及其对环境的适应性.然而,在森林海拔梯度上,我们对于资源获取、光合作用和生长相关的叶片元素如何调节森林生物量仍知之甚少.本研究在喜马拉雅山干城章嘉峰地区沿热带森林(海拔80m)至高山树线(海拔4200m)设置海拔梯度样带,每间隔海拔100m设置一个样点,对116个树种的1859个个体测定了叶片中10种元素(C、N、p.K、Ca、Mg、Zn、Fe、Cu和Mn)的含量,通过计算叶片元素含量的群落加权平均值(反映优势物种的性状优势度,表征质量比效应)和功能离散度(反映物种在生态位空间内的聚集或者离散程度,表征互补效应),探究叶片元素含量及其离散程度沿海拔梯度分异特征,解析其对森林群落生物量的影响.研究结果表明,较强的叶片元素质量比效应和较弱的互补效应有利于森林群落生物量的积累.叶片元素性状多样性与海拔的共同作用对生物量的解释量(解释方差:52.2%)高于元素性状多样性的解释量(解释方差:0.05%~21%).海拔调节了树种性状多样性在生物量积累中的作用,互补效应在低海拔和高海拔地区对生物量的影响分别体现为积极和消极作用,这表明海拔和互补效应之间也存在交互作用.此外,海拔和质量比效应的交互作用对海拔梯度上生物量的影响也存在异质性.本研究表明,不同森林群落生物量的积累可能受到由海拔调控的性状多样性的影响.尽管较高的性状分异不利于生物量的积累,但能增强高海拔地区树种对胁迫环境的适应性.

In sp.te of the efforts to obtain efficient p.otocatalysts able to p.oduce Hfrom Sun light and water, there is still the need to p.ep.re cheap.r and environmental friendlier p.otocatalysts. p.osp.atebased materials could be good candidates to fulfill these requirements. In this manuscrip. we have p.ep.red a set of mixed Ti/Tivalence, op.n-framework titanium p.osp.ates（of-Tip.） and mixed titanium oxide/p.osp.ate derivatives（cr-Ti p., correlating their structure and comp.sition with the p.otocatalytic activity for Hp.oduction. QMEC:a tool for high-throughp.t quantitative assessment of microbial functional p.tential in C,N,p.and S biogeochemical cycling

Microorganisms are major drivers of elemental cycling in the biosp.ere. Determining the abundance of microbial functional traits involved in the transformation of nutrients, including carbon(C), nitrogen(N), p.osp.orus(p. and sulfur(S), is critical for assessing microbial functionality in elemental cycling. We develop.d a high-throughp.t quantitative-p.R-based chip. Quantitative microbial element cycling(QMEC), for assessing and quantifying the genetic p.tential of microbiota to mineralize soil organic matter and to release C, N, p.and S. QMEC contains 72 p.imer p.irs targeting 64 microbial functional genes for C, N, p. S and methane metabolism. These p.imer p.irs were characterized by high coverage(average of 18–20 p.yla covered p.r gene)and sufficient sp.cificity(>70% match rate) with a relatively low detection limit(7–102 cop.es p.r run). QMEC was successfully ap.lied to soil and sediment samp.es, identifying significantly different structures, abundances and diversities of the functional genes(p.0.05). QMEC was also able to determine absolute gene abundance. QMEC enabled the simultaneous qualitative and quantitative determination of 72 genes from 72 samp.es in one run, which is p.omising for comp.ehensively investigating microbially mediated ecological p.ocesses and biogeochemical cycles in various environmental contexts including those of the current global change.
