Analysis and Characterization of Pore System and Grain Sizes of Carbonate Rocks from Southern Lebanon

Carbonate rocks are common in many parts of the world, including the Eastern Mediterranean, where they host significant groundwater supplies and are widely used as building and ornamental stones. The porosity of carbonate rocks plays a critical role in fluid storage and retrieval. The pore structure connectivity, in particular, controls many properties of geological formations, as well as the relationships between the properties of individual minerals and the bulk properties of the rock. To study the relationships between porosity, rock properties, pore structure, pore size, and their impact on reservoir characteristics, 46 carbonate rock samples were collected from four stratigraphic sections exposed near Sidon, South Lebanon. The studied carbonate rocks are related to marine deposits of different ages(e.g., Upper Cretaceous, Eocene, and Upper Miocene). In order to understand the pore connectivity, the MICP(mercury injection capillary pressure) technique was conducted on ten representative samples. Results from the SEM analysis indicate the dominance of very fine and fine pore sizes, with various categories ranging in diameter from 0.1 to10 μm. The MICP data revealed that the pore throat radii vary widely from 0.001 to 1.4 μm, and that all samples are dominated by micropore throats. The grain size analysis indicated that the studied rocks have significant amounts of silt-and clay-size grains with respect to the coarser ‘sand-size’ particles, suggesting a high proportion of microporosity. Obtained results, such as the poorly-sorted nature of grains, high microporosity, and the high percentage of micropore throats, justify the observed low mean hydraulic radius, the high entry pressure, and the very low permeability of the studied samples. These results suggest that the carbonate rocks near Sidon(south of Lebanon) are possibly classified as non-reservoir facies.

Square cavity flow driven by two mutually facing sliding walls

We investigate the flow inside a 2D square cavity driven by the motion of two mutually facing walls independently sliding at different speeds.The exploration,which employs the lattice Boltzmann method(LBM),extends on previous studies that had the two lids moving with the exact same speed in opposite directions.Unlike there,here the flow is governed by two Reynolds numbers(Re_(T),Re_(B))associated to the velocities of the two moving walls.For convenience,we define a bulk Reynolds number Re and quantify the driving velocity asymmetry by a parameterα.Parameterαhas been defined in the rangeα∈[-π4,0]and a systematic sweep in Reynolds numbers has been undertaken to unfold the transitional dynamics path of the two-sided wall-driven cavity flow.In particular,the critical Reynolds numbers for Hopf and NeimarkSacker bifurcations have been determined as a function ofα.The eventual advent of chaotic dynamics and the symmetry properties of the intervening solutions are also analyzed and discussed.The study unfolds for the first time the full bifurcation scenario as a function of the two Reynolds numbers,and reveals the different flow topologies found along the transitional path.

Attack-resilient control for converter-based DC microgrids

In light of the growing integration of renewable energy sources in power systems,the adoption of DC microgrids has become increasingly popular,due to its simple structure,having no frequency,power factor concerns.However,the dependence of DC microgrids on cyber-networks also makes them susceptible to cyber-attacks.Potential cyberattacks can disrupt power system facilities and result in significant economic and loss of life.To address this concern,this paper presents an attack-resilient control strategy for microgrids to ensure voltage regulation and power sharing with stable operation under cyber-attack on the actuators.This paper first formulates the cyber-security problem considering a distributed generation based microgrid using the converter model,after which an attack-resilient control is proposed to eliminate the actuator attack impact on the system.Steady state analysis and root locus validation illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method.The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated through simulation results.

This study examined the application of an instrument that supports intersectoral collaboration in innovation.Using the strategic action field(SAF)approach,we analyze a precommercial public procurement instrument developed in Andalusia(Spain).Drawing on qualitative and quantitative data,we shed light on the dynamics of collaboration between public and private innovation agents.We show how a change in dynamics can generate a reduction in barriers to intersectoral cooperation.This presents an opportunity to promote the transfer of knowledge and strengthen a strategic field of action,such as the agroindustry,which is the main source of income for several people in Andalusia,a European region that is developmentally lagging.

Hyperglycemia and reduced adiposity of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice are not alleviated by oral benzylamine supplementation

BACKGROUND Benzylamine(Bza)oral administration delays the onset of hyperglycemia in insulin-resistant db-/-mice;a genetic model of obesity and type 2 diabetes.AIM To extend the antihyperglycemic properties of oral benzylamine to a model of insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes.METHODS Male Swiss mice were rendered diabetic by streptozotocin treatment(STZ)and divided in two groups:one received 0.5%Bza as drinking solution for 24 d(STZ Bza-drinking)while the other was drinking water ad libitum.Similar groups were constituted in age-matched,nondiabetic mice.Food intake,liquid intake,body weight gain and nonfasting blood glucose levels were followed during treatment.At the end of treatment,fasted glycemia,liver and white adipose tissue(WAT)mass were measured,while glucose uptake assays were performed in adipocytes.RESULTS STZ diabetic mice presented typical features of insulin-deficient diabetes:reduced body mass and increased blood glucose levels.These altered parameters were not normalized in the Bza-drinking group in spite of restored food and water intake.Bza consumption could not reverse the severe fat depot atrophy of STZ diabetic mice.In the nondiabetic mice,no difference was found between control and Bza-drinking mice for any parameter.In isolated adipocytes,hexose uptake was partially activated by 0.1 mmol/L Bza in a manner that was obliterated in vitro by the amine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine and that remained unchanged after Bza supplementation.Oxidation of 0.1 mmol/L Bza in WAT was lower in STZ diabetic than in normoglycemic mice.CONCLUSION Bza supplementation could not normalize the altered glucose handling of STZ diabetic mice with severe WAT atrophy.Consequently,its antidiabetic potential in obese and diabetic rodents does not apply to lipoatrophic type 1 diabetic mice.

Selecting the best type of equipment among available switches with different prices and reliability levels is a significant challenge in distribution system planning.In this paper,the optimal type of switches in a radial distribution system is selected by considering the total cost and reliability criterion and using the weighted augmented epsilon constraint method and combinatorial optimization.A new index is calculated to assess the robustness of each Pareto solution.Moreover,for each failure,repair time is considered based on historical data.Monte Carlo simulations are used to consider the switch failure uncertainty and fault repair time uncertainty in the model.The proposed framework is applied to an RTBS Bus-2 test system.Furthermore,the model is also applied to an industrial system to verify the proposed method’s excellent performance in larger practical engineering problems.

Inertial PLL of Grid-connected Converter for Fast Frequency Support

Frequency support capability for the grid-connected converter(GCC)is one of the basic safeguards for the stability of renewables-dominated power systems.In this paper,analogous to the motion equation of a synchronous generator(SG),an inertial phase-locked loop(iPLL)is proposed for GCC to achieve fast frequency support.The iPLL introduces the inertial and damping loops into the classic PLL structure to emulate the natural frequency regulation characteristics of a SG.Compared with the existing methods,the iPLL has a faster frequency response and is simpler in design and implementation.Finally,the proposed iPLL method is validated by experiments.Index Terms-Frequency support,grid-connected converter,inertial phase-locked loop(iPLL),synchronous generation(SG).

Transient Characteristics and Quantitative Analysis of Electromotive Force for DFIG-based Wind Turbines during Grid Faults

For doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG)-based wind turbines(WTs),various advanced control schemes have been proposed to achieve the low voltage ride through(LVRT)capability,whose parameters design is significantly reliant on the rotor electromotive force(EMF)of DFIG-based WTs.However,the influence of the rotor current on EMF is usually ignored in existing studies,which cannot fully reflect the transient characteristics of EMF.To tackle with this issue,this study presents a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of EMF during grid faults considering various control modes.First,the DFIG model under grid faults is established.Subsequently,the transient characteristics of EMF are analyzed under different control modes(that is,rotor open-circuit and connected to converter).Furthermore,the EMF transient eigenvolumes(that is,accessorial resistance item,transient decay time constant,and frequency offset)are quantitatively analyzed with the typical parameters of MW-level DFIG-based WT.The analysis results contribute to the design of the LVRT control scheme.Finally,the analysis is validated by the hardware-in-the-loop experiments.

Development of a multiprimer metabarcoding approach to understanding trophic interactions in agroecosystems

To understand trophic interactions and the precise ecological role of each predatory species,it is important to know which arthropod and plant resources are used by generalist predators in agroecosystems.Molecular approaches,such as the use of high-throughput sequencing(HTS),play a key role in identifying these resources.This study develops a multiprimer metabarcoding approach for screening the most common trophic interactions of two predatory arthropods with contrasting morphologies,Rhagonycha fulva(Coleoptera:Cantharidae)and Anthocoris nemoralis(Hemiptera:Anthocoridae)collected from a peach crop.To reduce the time and cost of this metabarcoding approach,we first evaluated the effect of using two different predator-pools of different size(10 and 23 individuals of the same species).We also used our system to analyze the performance of one and two primer pairs in the same library.Our results show that the analysis of 23 individuals together with the use of two primer pairs in the same library optimize the HTS analysis.Using these best-performing conditions,we then analyzed the entire bodies of field-collected predators as well as the washing solutions used to clean the insect bodies.We were able to identify both gut content(i.e.,diet)and external pollen load(i.e.,on the insects’bodies).This study also demonstrates the importance of washing predatory insects’bodies prior to HTS analysis when the target species have a considerable size(>10 mm)and hairy structures.This metabarcoding approach has significant potential for the study of trophic links in agriculture,revealing expected and unexpected trophic relationships.

Geotechnical particle finite element method for modeling of soilstructure interaction under large deformation conditions

The possibilities of the particle finite element method(PFEM)for modeling geotechnical problems are increasingly evident.PFEM is a numerical approach to solve large displacement and large strain continuum problems that are beyond the capabilities of classical finite element method(FEM).In PFEM,the computational domain is reconfigured for optimal solution by frequent remeshing and boundary updating.PFEM inherits many concepts,such as a Lagrangian description of continuum,from classic geomechanical FEM.This familiarity with more popular numerical methods facilitates learning and application.This work focuses on G-PFEM,a code specifically developed for the use of PFEM in geotechnical problems.The article has two purposes.The first is to give the reader an overview of the capabilities and main features of the current version of the G-PFEM and the second is to illustrate some of the newer developments of the code.G-PFEM can solve coupled hydro-mechanical static and dynamic problems involving the interaction of solid and/or deformable bodies.Realistic constitutive models for geomaterials are available,including features,such as structure and destructuration,which result in brittle response.The solutions are robust,solidly underpinned by numerical technology including mixedfield formulations,robust and mesh-independent integration of elastoplastic constitutive models and a rigorous and flexible treatment of contact interactions.The novel features presented in this work include the contact domain technique,a natural way to capture contact interactions and impose contact constraints between different continuum bodies,as well as a new simplified formulation for dynamic impact problems.The code performance is showcased by the simulation of several soil-structure interaction problems selected to highlight the novel code features:a rigid footing insertion in soft rock,pipeline insertion and subsequent lateral displacement on over-consolidated clay,screw-pile pull-out and the dynamic impact of a free-falling spherical penetrom
