Liver Histology after Chronic Use of Alcohol and Exercise Training in Rats

Objectives： To investigate the effects of physical training on the liver morphology and morphometry after chronic use of alcohol in rats. Methods： Twenty-four Wistar rats were housed in cages with controlled environment and randomly divided into four groups according to treatment received. In the initial treatment, alcohol was administered to SA （sedentary alcohol） and EA （exercise alcohol） groups. After four weeks, physical training program was held on a treadmill with EA and EC （exercise control） groups. Area, perimeter, maximum and minimum diameter and form factor of nucleus and cytoplasm of hepatocytes were analyzed. Key findings： Micro-vesicular fatty degeneration, predominantly pericentrolobular, of mild to moderate intensity, was found especially in animals treated with alcohol. EC group showed nucleus area greater than the nucleus area of EA and SA groups. The form factor was lower in the EC group than in the EA group. EA group showed maximum cytoplasm diameter is smaller than in SC （sedentary control） group. Conclusions： Physical training for two weeks was not enough to suppress histopathologic changes in the liver caused by chronic use of alcohol in rats. Chronic use of alcohol seems to have minimized the beneficial effect of physical training in the nucleus area of hepatocytes.

The quality and coverage of the available taxonomical and geographical information and the recognition that diversity is multi-faceted are two main factors that hinder to understand the spatial and temporal variations of biodiversity. In this study, we aim to quantify the global distribution of five diversity components used to assess freshwater fish diversity in river basins around the world. The multidimensional character of these diversity components was estimated and the so obtained diversity dimensions mapped. This was done taking into account those well-surveyed basins discriminated by considering collector’s curves, and additionally by controlling for the effect of survey effort on all considered diversity components. A total of 1,472,109 occurrence records were analysed, corresponding to 17,292 species of freshwater fishes. Five diversity components were considered: functional richness, species richness, taxonomic diversity, and two rarity measures. Well-surveyed river basins were discriminated using accumulation curves. The effects of survey biases and knowledge gaps were minimized by determining the relationship of each component with the completeness values calculated for each river basin. The geographical pattern derived from raw data is skewed by the unequal knowledge available, and all diversity components were positively correlated with completeness values. The first dimension described the association between species richness and functional diversity. The second dimension represented rarity and taxonomic diversity. The congruence between species richness and functional diversity suggests that ecosystem functions increase with the number of fish species present in river basins and that a decrease in species richness may involve a loss of functionality. Background:In-hospital mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is *** prognostic indices are needed to identify patients at high-risk of COVID-19 health *** aimed to determine the usefulness of the CONtrolling NUTritional status(CONUT)index as a potential prognostic indicator of mortality in COVID-19 patients upon hospital ***:Our study design is of a retrospective observational study in a large cohort of COVID-19 *** addition to descriptive statistics,a Kaplan-Meier mortality analysis and a Cox regression were performed,as well as receiver operating curve(ROC).Results:From February 5,2020 to January 21,2021,there was a total of 2969 admissions for COVID-19 at our hospital,corresponding to 2844 ***,baseline(within 4 days of admission)CONUT index could be scored for 1627(57.2%)***’age was 67.3±16.5 years and 44.9%were *** CONUT severity distribution was:194(11.9%)normal(0-1);769(47.2%)light(2-4);585(35.9%)moderate(5-8);and 79(4.9%)severe(9-12).Mortality of 30 days after admission was 3.1%in patients with normal risk CONUT,9.0%light,22.7%moderate,and 40.5%in those with severe CONUT(P<0.05).An increased risk of death associated with a greater baseline CONUT stage was sustained in a multivariable Cox regression model(P<0.05).An increasing baseline CONUT stage was associated with a longer duration of admission,a greater requirement for the use of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation,and other clinical outcomes(all P<0.05).The ROC of CONUT for mortality had an area under the curve(AUC)and 95%confidence interval of 0.711(0.676-0746).Conclusion:The CONUT index upon admission is potentially a reliable and independent prognostic indicator of mortality and length of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters of Turiacu Pineapple Clones and Genetic Correlation between Traits

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of Turiaçu pineapple clones using mixed models;and estimate genetic correlation coefficient between traits, to provide important information to breeding programs. For this, 19 pineapple plants were visually selected and its slips were collected and planted in a single environment and nine traits were evaluated. The genetic parameters of most evaluated traits presented significant differences between the 19 clones. Some traits, such as Fusarium wilt resistance, showed high magnitudes of heritability. Clones did not differ in relation to total titratable acidity (TTA) and total soluble solids (TSS). However, these traits, which have implications to fruit quality, showed to be negatively correlated to fruit mass (-0.46 and -0.67). The results indicate that the population of Turiaçu pineapple is suitable for selection, especially for Fusarium wilt resistance. Also, Turiaçu clones can be used in breeding programs of pineapple.

The production of Nb microalloyed coils by thin slab casting and direct rolling（TSDR）technologies shows some metallurgical characteristics that significantly differentiate this process from conventional casting and rolling of thick *** improved combinations of strength and thickness are sought,modeling tools designed ad hoc to predict the austenite microstructural evolution provide an insightful input to process and composition *** paper shows the latest simulation tools developed by CEIT and CBMM for different TSDR configurations available in the *** models predict grain size distributions taking into account softening-precipitation interactions,refinement due to static and dynamic recrystallization and strain accumulation during last rolling *** on the metallurgical analysis,parameters such as Recrystallization Limit Temperature（RLT）and Recrystallization Stop Temperature（RST）are also defined.A wider knowledge of all the mechanisms involved in these grades will open new possibilities to produce new final grades by TSDR technologies with optimized processing routes,microstructures and,as a consequence,final mechanical properties.

Early Feeding vs 5-Day Fasting after Distal Elective Bowel Anastomoses in Children.A Randomized Controlled Trial

Purpose: Determine the safety and efficacy of early enteral feeding after distal elective bowel anastomoses (DEBA) in children. Methods: Controlled randomized trial including pediatric patients with DEBA, excluding non-elective and high risk patients. Variables: Demographics, operative time, anastomosis placement, beginning peristalsis and bowel movement, time to full diet intake, post-operative stay, persisting vomiting and abdominal distention, wound infection or dehiscence, anastomotic leak, reoperation, death. Randomization into: 1) Experimental group (EG): early feeding group, after a minimum 24 hours fasting period, oral fluids and diet was started;2) Control group (CG): obligatory 5-day fasting. Descriptive Statistics: Student’s t test for quantitative and Chi square for qualitative variables, a p-value 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 60 patients were included since June 2003 to May 2004, 30 ineach group. Mean age 2 years, weight16 kg, malnutrition 33%. Stomal Ethiology: Anorectal-malformation 46%, Hirschsprung 13%, inflammatory 35%, tumoral 5%. Mostly in colon 71%. Mean surgical time 142 min. None developed vomiting or required nasogastric-tube. Mild abdominal distension 13%, mild fever 16.5% and wound complications 18%. Anastomosis leakage 6.5%, none required reoperations. Demographic variables showed no statistical differences. Full oral intake was in the 2nd postoperative day in the EG vs CG (p = 0.001). Postoperative hospital stay was 6.0 ± 3 in the EG vs 9.8 ± 4 days in the CG with clinical but not statistical significance. Peristalsis beginning, first flatus passage and bowel movements showed no statistical differences. The complication incidence was low and equally distributed. Conclusions: Early feeding after DEBA is safe and well tolerated in children.

Yields of rice (Oryza sativa L.) respond to complex interactions between the genotype and the environment;rice has the particularity of being a semi-aquatic crop, and as a result of this, it presents lower adaptation to the limiting water content of soil and is extremely sensitive to stress from drought;therefore, it is the most important limiting factor in rice production. The objective of this study was to research the physiological response of rice genotypes to water stress. The grain yield and its components, leaf area and transpiration efficiency under irrigation (I) and drought (D) were evaluated in eight advanced lines from the nursery of the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (Fondo Latinoamericano para Arroz de Riego, FLAR) and a control variety of rice. The experiment was established in Campeche, in the 2015 autumn-winter cycle. The grain yield and its components, as well as the leaf area were greater under irrigation conditions than under drought. The transpiration from the water stress was reduced and the plants under drought increased their transpiration efficiency. The genotypes P-V 2006 and P-V 2009 were identified, with genealogies FL05392-3P-12-2P-2P-M and FL08224-3P-2-1P-3P-M, respectively, as the most outstanding compared to the rest of the genotypes in the grain yield and its components, leaf area, total root biomass, and transpiration efficiency.

The IndyCar series distinguishes itself by providing the same design and operation of the single-seater to its *** difference in times is then attributable to the skills of the drivers,but considering the data from the races could test this *** objective of this work was to establish a trajectory model to predict race times.A cross-sectional,correlational,and explanatory work was carried out with a sample of 18,474 records in the period from 2020 to 2023 of the IndyCar *** results show that the time span predicts the time *** relation to the studies of acceptance of the technology,the adjustment of this to human capacities to explain the time differences in the series of racing cars is discussed.

Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellularcarcinoma

Aim:The optimal treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is either surgical resection or liver transplantation,but only one-third of the patients are suitable candidates for *** radiofrequency ablation(RFA)in selected patients is a safe,feasible technique,which has proved to be superior to the percutaneous approach in patients with severe liver disease or in lesions in which the percutaneous approach is *** aim of this study is to present our experience with laparoscopic RFA and demonstrate its safety as an alternative therapeutic procedure in selected patients with ***:This is a retrospective study of patients with HCC who underwent laparoscopic RFA between march 2009 and December ***:Thirty-two patients with 37 tumors underwent laparoscopic *** tumor size was 2.24 cm(0.7-4.45 cm).Major complications occurred in 8 *** complete ablation was achieved in 94.6%(35/37)lesions and sustained complete ablation rate was 62.85%(22/35).Overall survival rates at 1-,2-,and 3-year were 89%,67.5%,and 40%,***:Laparoscopic RFA of HCC is safe and the long-term outcomes are similar to those achieved with liver *** trials combining chemoembolization and RFA are needed to improve long-term outcomes and to limit local tumor progression.
