Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)in ambient air samples at the electronic waste(e-waste)reclamation site

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)have been used as flame retardants in various building materials,plastic and other polymers,airplanes,electronics,*** or some of their congeners have been already banned in many countries,due to their persistency and adverse health *** this study,we are focusing on e-wastes as a source of emission of PBDEs in ambient air during reclamation *** ambient air particulate matter(Pm)samples were collected at and near an e-waste reclamation site in Bangkok,*** showed the presence of various homologues,viz:tri-,tetra-,penta-,hexa-,and hepta-PBDEs in both Pm2.5 and total suspended particle(TSP)*** comparison of samples as a function of distance from the reclamation site indicated elevated levels of PBDEs in close proximity to the e-waste ***,a shift in the congener pattern was observed with lower brominated PBDEs being more prevalent in nearby off-site samples as compared to the Pm collected at the e-waste *** total penta-PBDEs concentration is almost double in the e-waste site Pm2.5 compared to the control site *** TSP,tetra,penta,and hepta-PBDEs congeners are at higher concentrations at the e-waste sites and its vicinity compared to reference ***,a clear trend can be observed indicating a debromination of PBDEs to more toxic tri and tetra congeners during the reclamation process and PBDEs are being translocated from treated materials to ambient air *** 30 is uniquely detected in our studies as a dominant final debromination product,that can be used as a marker of thermal e-waste *** work indicates potential hazards related to the reclamation of e-wastes and remediation of sites containing *** particular,thermal treatment methods can lead to congener transformation and increased emissions of more toxic lower brominated congeners.

Ecological significance of dorsal polymorphism in a Batesian mimic snake

Batesian mimicry is the process in which harmless species adopt the appearance of a dangerous, aposematic *** some prey species,both Batesian mimetic and non-Batesian morphs coexist,presupposing that both morphs have to be evolutionarily *** viperine snake, Natrix maura,exhibits a zigzag dorsal pattern and antipredatory behavior that mimics European *** snake also has a striped dorsal pattern that coexists with the zigzag *** have examined whether individuals belonging to different geographically structured clades were more likely to exhibit a certain dorsal pattern,and whether the zigzag pattern has a protective function by exposing artificial snakes to predation in natural environments,in addition to comparing antipredatory behavior between zigzag and striped snakes also in natural *** results indicate that the striped pattern was not geographically structured,but *** predators less frequently attacked zigzag plasticine models than striped or unpatterned *** detected a shift in antipredator behavior between the 2 morphs,as Batesian mimicking *** responded to an approaching potential predator by remaining immobile or fleeing at shorter distances than did striped *** conclude that Batesian mimics maintain the cryptic and aposematic value by resembling vipers,whereas in open habitats the non-Batesian mimic has altered its antipredator behavior to maintain its fitness.

Orchid diversity provides a unique opportunity to further our understanding of biotic and abiotic factors linked to patterns of richness,endemism,and phylogenetic endemism in many ***,orchid diversity is consistently threatened by illegal trade and habitat ***,we identified areas critical for orchid conservation in the biogeographic province of *** this purpose,we evaluated orchid endemism,phylogenetic diversity,and phylogenetic endemism within megamexico and characterized orchid life *** results indicate that the majority of the regions with the highest estimates of endemism and phylogenetic endemism are in southern mexico and northern Central America,mostly located on the Pacific side of *** the most important orchid lineages,several belong to epiphytic lineages such as Pleurothallidinae,Laeliinae and *** also found that species from diverse and distantly related lineages converge in montane forests where suitable substrates for epiphytes ***,the southernmost areas of phylogenetic diversity and endemism of megamexico are in unprotected ***,we conclude that the most critical areas for orchid conservation in megamexico are located in southern mexico and northern Central *** recommend that these areas should be given priority by the mexican system of natural protected areas as complementary conservation areas.

In this paper we modify the mEBDF method using the NDFs as predictors instead of the BDFs. We have done it in three different ways： changing both predictors of the mEBDF, changing only the first predictor and changing only the second one. We have called the new methods mENDF, mENBDF and mEBNDF respectively. The new methods are A-stable up to order 4 and the stability properties of the new methods are better than the mEBDF method.

Contrasting size-dependent life history strategies of an insular lizard

In many species with continuous growth,body size is an important driver of life-history tactics and its relative importance is thought to reflect the spatio-temporal variability of selective *** developed a deterministic size-dependent integral projection model for 3 insular neighboring lizard populations with contrasting adult body sizes to investigate how size-related selective pressures can influence lizard life-history *** each population,we broke down differences in population growth rates into contributions from size-dependent body growth,survival,and feeundity.A life table response experiment(LTRE)was used to compare the population dynamics of the 3 populations and quantify the contributions of intrinsic demographic coefficients of each population to the population growth rate(z).Perturbation analyses revealed that the largest adults contributed the most to the population growth rate,but this was not true in the population with the smallest adults and size-independent *** we were not able to identify a single factor responsible for this difference,the combination of the demographic model on a continuous trait coupled with an LTRE analysis revealed how individuals from sister populations of the same species follow different life strategies and showed different compensatory mechanisms among survival,individual body growth,and *** results indicate that body size can play a contrasting role even in closely-related and closely-spaced populations.

Phasor measurement units(PmUs)are fundamental tools in the applications of modern power systems,where synchronized phasor estimations are *** accuracy and dynamic performance requirements for phasor,frequency,and rate of change of frequency(ROCOF)estimations are established in the IEEE Std.C37.118.1-2011 along with the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 a-2014,where two PmU performances are suggested:P class filters for applications requiring fast response and m class filters for applications requiring high rejection to aliased *** this paper,a methodology to design new phasor estimators that satisfy the P class and m class requirements in PmUs is *** proposed methodology is based on finite impulse response filters,brick-wall filters,and complex filter design concepts,where frequency range,time performance,harmonic rejection and out-of-band interference requirements are considered in its design.A comparative analysis using the reference model given by the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 is *** results show the effectiveness of the phasor estimators under steady-state and dynamic conditions according to the PmU standard,making them suitable tools for applications in power systems.

In recent years,deep learning methods have been introduced for segmentation and classi-fication of leaf lesions caused by pests and *** the commonly used approaches,convolutional neural networks have provided results with high *** purpose of this work is to present an effective and practical system capable of seg-menting and classifying different types of leaf lesions and estimating the severity of stress caused by biotic agents in coffee leaves using convolutional neural *** proposed approach consists of two stages:a semantic segmentation stage with severity calculation and a symptom lesion classification *** stage was tested separately,highlighting the positive and negative points of each *** obtained very good results for the severity estimation,suggesting that the model can estimate severity values very close to the real *** the biotic stress classification,the accuracy rates were greater than 97%.Due to the promising results obtained,an App for Android platform was developed and imple-mented,consisting of semantic segmentation and severity calculation,as well as symptom classification to assist both specialists and farmers to identify and quantify biotic stresses using images of coffee leaves acquired by smartphone.

Alagille syndrome(ALGS;OmIm#118450)is a highlyvariable,multi-systemic,autosomal dominant disorder,caused by mutations in the Jagged Canonical Notch Ligand 1(JAG1)gene(20p12.2)or in the Neurogenic locus notch homolog protein 2(NOTCH2)gene(1p13).^(1)It primarily affects the liver,heart,eyes,face,kidney,skin,vertebrae,and skeleton.^(1,2)The JAG1 gene has 26 exons and about 90%of the ALGS cases result from pathogenic variants in the JAG1 and around 7%of cases have deletions in chromosome 20 that include this gene.

One-year survival in recipients older than 50 bridged to heart transplant with Impella 5.5 via axillary approach

BACKGROUND Optimizing patients with advanced heart failure before orthotopic heart transplantation(OHT), especially in patients greater than 50 years old, is imperative to achieving successful post-transplant outcomes. Complications are well-described for patients bridged to transplant(BTT) with durable left ventricular assist device(LVAD) support. Given the lack of data available in older recipients after the recent increase in mechanical support use, we felt it crucial to report our center’s one-year outcomes in older recipients after heart transplantation with percutaneously placed Impella 5.5 as a *** Forty-nine OHT patients were supported with the Impella 5.5 intended as a bridge between December 2019 and October 2022 at mayo Clinic in Florida. Data were extracted from the electronic health record at baseline and during their transplant episode of care after Institutional Review Boards approval as exempt for retrospective data *** Thirty-eight patients aged 50 or older were supported with Impella 5.5 as BTT. Ten patients underwent heart and kidney transplantation within this cohort. The median age at OHT was 63(58–68) years, with 32 male(84%) and six female patients(16%). Etiology was divided into ischemic(63%) and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy(37%). The baseline median ejection fraction was 19%(15–24). most patients were in blood group O(60%), and 50% were diabetic. The average duration of support was 27 days(range 6–94). The median duration of follow-up is 488 days(185–693). For patients that have reached the 1-year follow-up timeframe(22 of 38, 58%), the 1-year post-transplant survival is 95%.CONCLUSION Our single-center data provides awareness for using the Impella 5.5 percutaneously placed axillary support device in older heart failure patients in cardiogenic shock as a bridge to transplantation. One-year survival outcomes after heart transplantation are excellent despite the older recipient’s age and prolonged pre-transplant support.

Conductivity of the phloem in mango (mangifera indica L.)

mango(mangifera indica L.,Anacardiaceae),the fifth most consumed fruit worldwide,is one of the most important fruit crops in tropical regions,but its vascular anatomy is quite *** studies examined the xylem structure in the stems of mango,but the anatomy of the phloem has remained elusive,leaving the long-distance transport of photoassimilates *** combined fluorescence and electron microscopy to evaluate the structure of the phloem tissue in the tapering branches of mango trees,and used this information to describe the hydraulic conductivity of its sieve tube elements following current models of fluid transport in *** revealed that the anatomy of the phloem changes from current year branches,where it was protected by pericyclic fibres,to older ones,where the lack of fibres was concomitant with laticiferous canals embedded in the phloem *** was present in the sieve plates,but also in the walls of the phloem sieve cells,making them discernible from other phloem cells.A scaling geometry of the sieve tube elements-including the number of sieve areas and the pore size across tapering branches-resulted in an exponential conductivity towards the base of the *** evaluations in mangofit with previous measurements of the phloem architecture in the stems of forest trees,suggesting that,despite agronomic management,the phloem sieve cells scale with the tapering *** pipe model theory applied to the continuous tubing system of the phloem appears as a good approach to understand the hydraulic transport of photoassimilates in fruit trees.
