Background： Removal of the follicular content by ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicle aspiration（TVFA） may fail to induce immediate atresia and loss of function, resulting in the occurrence of residual follicles（RF）. The aims of this study were to characterize the blood flow in RF and to determine the effects of the treatment with estradiol benzoate on RF fate. Lactating, cyclic Holstein-Gir crossbred cows were used. In Experiment 1, follicular wave emergence（D0） was synchronized in cows（n = 10） and follicular growth was then monitored by transrectal ultrasonography from D0 to D8, followed by TVFA of the largest follicle present on the ovaries 24 h later. Color Doppler ultrasound imaging was used to examine blood flow on the follicular wall, which was recorded immediately before and every 12 h after TVFA, up to 72 h. In experiment 2, cows（n = 22） were randomly allocated to receive either 2 mL of saline i.m.（Control group, n = 11） or 2 mL estradiol benzoate i.m.（EB group, n = 11）immediately after TVFA. Ovaries were scanned every 12 h to confirm the presence and to measure the diameter of RF. The contents of the RF, if present, were collected 72 h after the first TVFA, using the same aspiration *** fluid from original follicles and RF were stored at-20 °C until hormonal ***： In Experiment 1, there was no reduction（P 〉 0.05） of blood flow in the remaining follicle walls after TVFA and maximum blood flow values were observed at 49.5 ± 19.7 h post-TVFA. In Experiment 2, formation of RF after TVFA was proportionally similar between Controls（5/9） and EB（5/10） cows. Also, RF diameter did not differ between groups（P 〉 0.05）. Background and Objectives: In anesthesia for bariatric surgery, alterations occur in several organs, including the kidney. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of dexmedetomidine and remifentanil on the renal function of morbidly obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery. Methods: Sixty-one patients were studied prospectively and divided randomly into two groups: remifentanil (R) and dexmedetomidine (D). Renal function was evaluated in three phases: before anesthesia (M0), after anesthetic induction (M1) and after surgical incision (M2). Plasma concentrations were determined for glucose, antidiuretic hormone, creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium and osmolarity and urinary concentrations for creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium and osmolarity. Results: Significant differences were found between groups for potassium at M1 (p Conclusions: In both groups, the clearance values fell from moments M0 to M2. This result indicates that renal function of obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery presented a physiological response compatible with the effect of anesthetic-surgical stress. In the group D, creatinine and sodium clearances were elevated at M1. Urinary volume was greater at M2. These results are suggestive of better preservation of renal function.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)has emerged as a curative strategy for sickle cell anemia(SCA);it is necessary to find markers of SCA clinical severity to spare those SCA patients whose clinical course is mild from the morbidity and mortality associated with HSCT. Haplotypes have been correlated with the severity of clinical manifestations in SCA patients, and fetal hemoglobin(HbF)and socioeconomic status(SeS)have also been described as negative factors. We studied these factors and their impact on clinical manifestations in a population of Southern Brazilian patients attending the Center for Sickle Cell Anemia at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil. Clinical severity was defined as two or more veno-occlusive episodes per year. The βS haplotypes were determined by PCR in 75 SCA patients. Among the 150 βS chromosomes analyzed, 99(66%)were identified as Bantu(Ban), 41(27%)asBenin(Ben), and 10(7%)as other haplotypes. Most patients in our sample(62.7%)belonged to lower SeS groups, precluding meaningful statistical analysis of SeS impact on clinical severity. There was no correlation between haplotypes or HbF level and SCA clinical severity. Gene polymorphisms and environmental issues have to be taken into consideration.

Green Fertilization Enhances the Photosynthetic Performance and the Growth of Leguminous Trees for Restoration Plantation in Central Amazon

The leguminous tree species Dipteryx odorata (Aubl.) Willd. and Inga edulis Mart. were grown in the field to reforest a degraded area. To investigate the photosynthetic responses and the initial growth of Amazonian forest species under fertilization, the study species were subjected to different treatments: T1 = unfertilized-control, T2 = chemical fertilization, T3 = green fertilization and T4 = green and chemical fertilization. D. odorata showed the highest absolute growth rates in height under treatments T4 (10.2 cm·month-1) and T2 (12.2 cm·month-1). I. edulis exhibited the best performance for this same parameter in T4 (23.0 cm·month-1). The highest photosynthesis values (Pn) for both D. odorata (13.1 μmol·m-2·s-1) and I. edulis (20.6 μmol·m-2·s-1) were found in T4. The two species also showed the highest performance index values (PIABS) under T4 (D. odorata = 2.9 and I. edulis = 5.2). Our results suggest that the combination of green and chemical fertilization was the most effective of the four treatments evaluated for improving the photosynthetic performance and the growth of both species during the initial establishment of the species in a degraded area.

Currently, engineering processes require reduced manufacturing time and low cost, in addition to the growing demand for workpieces with high accuracy. Workpieces with complex geometries and free forms has been a common practice in industries from different sectors such as： automotive, aeronautics, bioengineering among others. One way to satisfy the market requirements satisfactorily is making measurements more efficient to make the production process faster, in other words, it is necessary to make the inspection system more accurate and flexible. The coordinate measuring evolved over the past three decades and today it is the technology that best meets the requirements of modem manufacturing through CMMs （coordinate measurement machines）. The CMMs are important tool for design, fabrication and inspection of manufactured products, also used in the application of reverse engineering. These machines are also used by engineers in order to produce an accurate digital model in a virtual space for later use in CAD （computer-aided design）/CAM （computer-aided manufacturing）. It is worth mentioning that the accuracy of the modeling process of given piece depends on the number of control points that are captured on the workpiece surface. Consequently, the laser inspection systems are the best tools for use in reverse engineering, but more expensive when compared to contact measurement systems that use the TTP （touch trigger probe）, also used by CMMs. In this case, this paper aims to present an approach based on NURBS （non-uniform rational B-splines） to obtain free form curves and surfaces from a group of points obtained by using a contact sensor, the touch trigger probe. NURBS is an important mathematical tool and consists of generalizations of Bezier curves and surfaces and B-splines. Advanced high alumina refractory castables of ultra-low and to cement types, are well-known because of their ability on developing similar and/or superior thermal and mechanical properties. Following the recent trend of including nanoparticles in refractory castables, in this work, it is presented a novel way to obtain the benefit effects on the thermal and mechanical properties, promoted by the development in situ, of alumina’s nanoparticles in the matrix of castable (85 wt% Al2O3). The alumina nanoparticles were originated in situ after firing, due to the pyrolysis and oxidation of an aqueous resin, produced by the Pechini process. The resin played a double role, one as mixing liquid vehicle and the other as the aluminum oxide nanoparticles precursor. The results indicate a strong increase in flexural strength and elastic modulus as well as leading to a higher residual strength after thermal shock.
