A Transcriptome Atlas of Physcomitrella patens Provides Insights into the Evolution and development of land Plants

Identifying the genetic mechanisms that underpin the evolution of new organ and tissue systems is an aim of evolutionary developmental biology. Comparative functional genetic studies between angiosperms and bryophytes can define those genetic changes that were responsible for developmental innovations. Here, we report the generation of a transcriptome atlas covering most phases in the life cycle of the model bryo- phyte Physcomitrella patens, including detailed sporophyte developmental progression. We identified a comprehensive set of sporophyte-specific transcription factors, and found that many of these genes have homologs in angiosperms that function in developmental processes such as flowering and shoot branching. deletion of the PpTCP5 transcription factor results in development of supernumerary sporangia attached to a single seta, suggesting that it negatively regulates branching in the moss sporophyte. Given that TCP genes repress branching in angiosperms, we suggest that this activity is ancient. Finally, compar- ison of P. patens and Arabidopsis thaliana transcriptomes led us to the identification of a conserved core of transcription factors expressed in tip-growing cells. We identified modifications in the expression patterns of these genes that could account for developmental differences between P. patens tip-growing cells and A. thaliana pollen tubes and root hairs.

The study of the recent colonization of a symbiont and its interaction with host communities in new locations is an opportunity to understand how they *** use of isotopic ratios in trophic ecology can provide measurements of a species'isotopic niche,as well as knowledge about how the isotopic niches between symbiont and host species *** isotope measurements were used to assess the sources of carbon assimilated by the host species(the bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis and Scrobicularia plana)and their associated symbiont pea crab Afropinnotheres monodi,which occurs within these bivalves'mantle *** mixing model estimates suggest that all of them assimilate carbon from similar sources,particularly from pseudofaeces and particulate organic matter in this symbiotic system based on filter *** symbiotic species occupy comparable trophic levels and its association seems to be commensal or parasitic depending on the duration of such *** pea crab *** reflects a sex-specific diet,where males are more generalist than the soft females because the latter's habitat is restricted to the host *** high isotopic overlap between soft females and *** may reflect a good commensal relationship with the host.

This paper reviews and discusses the current research status, trends, and future needs in the field of beach morphodynamics under the influence of storm *** paper reviews how the three main research methods, field investigations, numerical modelling, and physical modelling, have been used to study beach morphodynamics during storm *** quantitative definitions of storm sequences at different sites are presented and *** is shown that the definition of storm sequences is site-specific and requires knowledge of the storm climate, beach characteristics, and the temporal scale of beach ***, the paper brings together currently available approaches aimed at describing the effect of storm sequences on beach erosion in a general *** importance of storm chronology and the effects of an extreme storm within a sequence of storms are *** that, the more poorly studied aspect of beach recovery in between storms within a sequence is *** indicators for defining beach recovery, namely the shoreline location, sediment volumes, and the beach state, are identified and ***, important research needs, including the need for detailed physical modelling, are identified.

An in vitro and in silico study of anti-dermatophytic activity of gossypol from fruits of Thespesia populnea(l.)*** Correa

Objective:To isolate,purify,and characterize gossypol from the fruits of Thespesia populnea(l)*** Correa,test its antidermatophytic activity,identify its targets on the dermatophyte,and confirm the binding of gossypol with the fungal target by molecular docking ***:Gossypol from Thespesia populnea was characterized by high performance liquid chromatography,liquid chromatographmass spectrometry,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,and nuclear magnetic *** anti-dermatophytic activity of gossypol was tested against four different dermatophytes,*** mentagrophytes,Trichophyton rubrum,Microsporum canis,and Microsporum *** mentagrophytes was selected for further *** inhibitory mode of action of gossypol on Trichophyton mentagrophytes was determined by analyzing the modulation of gene expression in various pathways of the ***:Gossypol inhibited all the *** minimum inhibitory concentrations were 12.5μg/ml for Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis and 25μg/ml for Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum *** minimum fungicidal concentrations were 50μg/ml for Trichophyton mentagrophytes,100μg/ml for Microsporum canis and Trichophyton rubrum,and 200μg/ml for Microsporum *** inhibited the mRna expression of metalloprotease(MEP4)and isocitrate lyase(ICl).The binding of gossypol with the enzymes was confirmed by molecular docking *** best docking poses were found and the low binding energies were recorded with the two target ***:Gossypol is a potential antifungal agent and can be further explored as an anti-dermatophytic drug.

A bacterial effector protein uncovers a plant metabolic pathway involved in tolerance to bacterial wilt disease

Bacterial wilt caused by the soil-borne plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum is a devastating disease *** plant colonization,*** replicates massively,causing plant wilting and death;collapsed infected tissues then serve as a source of *** this work,we show that the plant metabolic pathway mediated by pyruvate decarboxylases(PdCs)contributes to plant tolerance to bacterial wilt *** and tomato plants resp ond to *** infection by in creasing PdC activity,and plants with deficient PdC activity are more susceptible to bacterial *** with either pyruvic acid or acetic acid(substrate and product of the PdC pathway,respectively)enhances plant tolerance to bacterial wilt *** effector protein secreted by ***,RipAK,interacts with PdCs and inhibits their oligomerization and enzymatic ***,our work reveals a metabolic pathway involved in plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,and a bacterial virulence strategy to promote disease and the completion of the pathogenic life cycle.

larch wood is structurally classifi ed in many countries as one of conifers with the highest load-bearing capacity(strength class of C30).The Spanish visual classifi cation regulation only assigns a strength class to 4 pine woods:laricio pine(Pinus nigra ***),Silvestre pine(Pinus sylvestris l.),Radiata pine(Pinus radiata ***),and Pinaster pine(Pinus pinaster Ait.).This work adds to the number of structurally characterised species by creating a visual classifi cation table for Japanese larch wood(larix kaempferi(lamb.)Carr.)which diff erentiates between 2 visual classes,MEG-1 and *** strength values were calculated for each class(fk,MEG-1=31.80 MPa,f k,MEG-2=24.55 MPa),mean module of elasticity(E 0,mean,MEG-1=13,082 MPA,E 0,mean,MEG-2=12,320 MPA)and density(ρk,MEG-1=456.6 kg m−3,ρk,MEG-2=469.1 kg m−3),before fi nally assigning a strength class of C30 to visual class MEG-1,and a strength class of C24 to visual class MEG-2.

On August 29th, 2018, a scientific team reported a measure of the Universal Gravitational Constant G with the highest precision ever. The team completed three experimental campaigns in the same city over the course of a year. That work provided a complete data set useful analyzing the values of Big G change with the distance to the Sun, as is claimed by the author of this paper.

In nature hummingbirds face floral resources whose availability, quality and quantity can vary spatially and temporally. Thus, they must constantly make foraging decisions about which patches, plants and flowers to visit, partly as a function of the nectar reward. The uncertainty of these decisions would possibly be reduced if an individual could remember locations or use visual cues to avoid revisiting recently depleted flowers. In the present study, we carried out field experiments with white-eared hummingbirds Hylocharis leucotis, to evaluate their use of locations or visual cues when foraging on natural flowers Penstemon roseus. We evaluated the use of spatial memory by observing birds while they were foraging between two plants and within a single plant. Our results showed that hummingbirds prefer to use location when foraging in two plants, but they also use visual cues to efficiently locate unvisited rewarded flowers when they feed on a single plant. However, in absence of visual cues, in both experiments birds mainly used the location of previously visited flowers to make subsequent visits. Our data suggest that hummingbirds are capable of learning and employing this flexibility depending on the faced environmental conditions and the information acquired in previous visits [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 468-476, 2011].
