Soil boron fertilization:The role of nutrient sources and rootstocks in citrus production

Boron （B） is a key element for citrus production, especially in tropical regions, where the nutrient availability is commonly low in the soil. In addition, information about doses, fertilizer sources, methods of application, and particularly, differential nutrient demand of scion/rootstock combinations are required for efficient fertilization of commercial groves. In a non-irri- gated sweet orange orchard （cv. Natal）, grafted onto rangpur lime, Swingle citrumelo or Sunki mandarin, we studied the application of two sources of B： boric acid （17% B, soluble in water） and ulexite （12% B, partiaJly soluble in water） at four levels of supply （control without B, and soil application of 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B）. The experiment was carried out for three years （2004-2006）. Boron availability in the soil and concentration in the leaves, as well as the fruit yield and quality of trees were evaluated. Soil B extracted with hot water and total leaf B positively correlated with doses of the nutrient applied to the trees. Levels of B in the soil and in the leaves did not vary with fertilizer sources. Fruit yield of trees grafted onto rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo was more responsive to B doses than those grafted onto Sunki mandarin. The maximum fruit yield of trees grafted onto Swingle was obtained with 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B, and leaf B level of 280 mg kg-1 that point out to a highest demand for B when this combination was compared with other rootstocks. Furthermore, fertilization with B did not affect the quality of fruits, but correlated with B and potassium （K） concentrations in the leaves. These results also support that the current recommendations for levels of B in leaves should be revisited.

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the most effective cytotoxins for the treatment of breast and lung cancer, is limited by its severe side effects and low tumor selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first time to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, employing a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX molecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochemical properties and displayed excellent biocompatibility when tested on blood （no hemolysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in human lung （A-549） and breast （McF-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX Ics0 （from 5.9 to 3.6 nM in A-549 and from 13.75 to 4.71 nM in McF-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volume of A-549 and McF-7 multicellular tumor spheroids （MTS）, an in vitro system that mimics in vivo tumors, in comparison to free PTX. This increased antitumoral activity is accompanied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer MTS. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can improve the antitumoral activity of PTX. This system can be used as a new nanoplatform to overcome the limitations of current breast and lung cancer treatments.

Grain yield losses in yellow-rusted durum wheat estimated using digital and conventional parameters under field conditions

The biotrophic fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici is the causal agent of the yellow rust in wheat. Between the years 2010–2013 a new strain of this pathogen(Warrior/Ambition),against which the present cultivated wheat varieties have no resistance, appeared and spread rapidly. It threatens cereal production in most of Europe. The search for sources of resistance to this strain is proposed as the most efficient and safe solution to ensure high grain production. This will be helped by the development of high performance and low cost techniques for field phenotyping. In this study we analyzed vegetation indices in the red,Green, Blue(rGB) images of crop canopies under field conditions. We evaluated their accuracy in predicting grain yield and assessing disease severity in comparison to other field measurements including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI), leaf chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and canopy temperature. We also discuss yield components and agronomic parameters in relation to grain yield and disease ***-based indices proved to be accurate predictors of grain yield and grain yield losses associated with yellow rust(r2= 0.581 and r2= 0.536, respectively), far surpassing the predictive ability of NDVI(r2= 0.118 and r2= 0.128, respectively). In comparison to potential yield, we found the presence of disease to be correlated with reductions in the number of grains per spike, grains per square meter, kernel weight and harvest index. Grain yield losses in the presence of yellow rust were also greater in later heading varieties. The combination of rGB-based indices and days to heading together explained 70.9% of the variability in grain yield and 62.7% of the yield losses.

Vacuum promotes metabolic shifts and increases biogenic hydrogen production in dark fermentation systems

The successful operation of any type of hydrogen-producing bioreactor depends on the performance of the microorganisms present in the system. Both substrate and partial gas pressures are crucial factors affecting dark fermentation metabolic pathways. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of both factors on hydrogen production using anaerobic granular sludge as inoculum and, secondly, to study the metabolic shifts of an anaerobic community subjected to low partial gas pressures. With this goal in mind, seven different wastewater （four synthetic media, two industrial waste- water, and one domestic effluent） and the effect of applying vacuum on the systems were analyzed. The application of vacuum promoted an increase in the diversity of hydrogen-producing bacteria, such as clostridium, and promoted the dominance of acetoclasticover hydrogenotrophic methanogens. The application of different media promoted a wide variety of metabolic pathways. Nevertheless, reduction of the hydrogen partial pressure by application of vacuum lead to further oxidation of reaction intermediates irrespective of the medium used, which resulted in higher hydrogen and methane production, and improved the cOD removal. Interestingly, vacuum greatly promoted biogenic hydrogen production from a real wastewater, which opens possibilities for future application of dark fermentation systems to enhance biohydrogen yields.

Depth of closure:New calculation method based on sediment data

Obtaining depth of closure(Doc) in an accurate manner is a fundamental issue for coastal engineering,since good results for coastal structures and beach nourishment depend mainly on Doc. currently, there are two methods for obtaining the Doc, mathematical formulations and profile surveys. However, these methods can incur important errors if one does not take into account the characteristics and morphology of the area, or if one does not have a sufficiently long time series. In this work the Doc is obtained from the break in the trend of the sediment with the depth, that is, in general with the increase of the depth a decrease in the size of the sediment takes place. However, at one point this tendency changes and the size increases, and then decreases again. When comparing the point where the minimum sediment size occurs before the increase, it is observed that the error incurred is small compared to other methods. If the Standard Deviation of Depth change(SDDc) method is considered as the most accurate method, the error incurred by the proposed method is less than 7%. In addition, it can be seen that the dispersion of the sediment method always occurs outside the zone of bar movement. Whereas in the methods of profiles survey(using 2 cm precision profiles), sometimes the Doc is obtained within the active zone of bar movement. In addition, where the relative minimum of the median sediment size is found, and the sizes of 0.063 and 0.125 mm predominate in the composition of the sample. Therefore, this new method allows the precise location of the Doc to be obtained in a fast and simple way. Furthermore, this method has the advantage that it is not affected by the modifications that may be experienced by both the study area and the cross-shore beach profile.

Design optimization of multilayer perceptron neural network by ant colony optimization applied to engine emissions data

A multilayer perceptron(MLP) artificial neural network(ANN) model has been optimized by the multi-objective ant colony optimization(MOAcO) algorithm, which uses three objective functions. A sensitivity analysis to choose MOAcO parameter values is carried out by calculating hypervolume metric, and the proposed approach adopts the Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno resenje(VIKOr) decision method to choose final compromised solution on the Pareto front obtained from MOAcO. As a result, we used the MLP-MOAcO developed model to estimate the value of engine emissions of NOxin a four stroke, spark ignition(SI) gasoline engine and observed acceptable correlation coefficient(r^2) of 0.99978.

This article reports that extremely thin nanobelts(thickness~10 nm)exhibit pseudocapacitive(Pc)charge storage in the asymmetric supercapacitor(ASc)configuration,while show battery-type charge storage in their single *** types of nanobelts,***-co_(3)O_(4) hybrid and spinal-type Nico_(2)O_(4),developed by electrospinning technique are used in this *** charge storage behaviour of the nanobelts is benchmarked against their binary metal oxide nanowires,i.e.,NiO and co_(3)O_(4),as well as a hybrid of similar chemistry,cuO-co_(3)O_(4).The nanobelts have thickness of~10 nm and width~200 nm,whereas the nanowires have diameter of~100 *** differences in charge storage behaviours are observed in NiO-co_(3)O_(4) hybrid nanobelts based AScs compared to those fabricated using the other materials-the former showed capacitive behav-iour whereas the others revealed battery-type discharge *** of pseudocapacitance in nanobelts based AScs is shown to arise from their nanobelts morphology with thickness less than typical electron diffusion lengths(~20 nm).Among all the five type of devices fabricated,the NiO-co_(3)O_(4) hybrid AScs exhibited the highest specific energy,specific power and cycling stability.
