Functional promoter rs189037 variant of ATM is associated with decrease in lung diffusing capacity after irradiation for nonesmall-cell lung cancer

Objective: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ataxia telangiectasiaemutated gene ATM have been linked with pneumonitis after radiotherapy for lung cancer but have not been evaluated in terms of pulmonary function impairment. Here we investigated potential associations between SNPs in ATM and changes in diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) in patients with nonesmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after radiotherapy. Methods: From November 1998 through June 2009, 448 consecutive patients with inoperable primary NSCLC underwent definitive (≥60 Gy) radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy. After excluding patients with a history of thoracic surgery, ra-diation, or lung cancer; without DNA samples available for analysis; or without pulmonary function testing within the 12 months before and the 12 months after radiotherapy, 100 patients were identified who are the subjects of this study. We genotyped two SNPs of ATM previously found to be associated with radiation-induced pneumonitis (rs189037 and rs228590) and evaluated potential correlations between these SNPs and impairment (decreases) in DLCO by using logistic regression analysis. results: Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the AA genotype of ATM rs189037 was associated with decreased DLCO after definitive radiotherapy than the GG/AG genotypes (univariate coefficient, -0.122; 95％ confidence interval (CI),-0.236 to -0.008; P = 0.037; and multivariate coefficient, -0.102; 95％ CI, -0.198 to -0.005; P = 0.038)No such correlations were found for rs228590 (univariate coefficient, -0.096; 95％ CI, -0.208 to 0.017; P = 0.096). Conclusions: The AA genotype of ATM rs189037 was associated with higher risk of lung injury than were the GG/AG genotypes in patients with NSCLC treated with radiotherapy. This finding should be validated prospectively with other patient populations.

BACKGrOUND Infection at the pin tract is a frequent and feared complication of external fixators(EF).The type of pin material and coatings have been regarded as possibly influencing infection rates.Over the last 20 years,few prospective clinical studies and systematic reviews addressed the role of coated pins on the rate of pin site infection in human clinical studies.AIM To assess the EF literature over the past 20 years on the clinical benefits of pins manufactured from varied materials and coating systems and their possible role in pin tract infection rates.METHODS We performed a systematic review according to the PrISMA and PICOS guidelines using four scientific platforms:PubMed,LiLacs,SciELO,and Cochrane.We searched the literature for related publications over the past 20 years.rESULTS A literature search yielded 29 articles,among which seven met the inclusion criteria.These studies compared stainless-steel pins and pins coated with hydroxyapatite(HA),titanium and silver.The pin tract infection definitions were arbitrary and not standardized among studies.Most studies included a low number of patients in the analysis and used a short follow-up time.Three metaanalyses were carried out,comparing stainless steel vs silver pins,stainless steel vs HA-coated pins,and titanium vs HA-coated pins.None of this analysis resulted in statistically significant differences in pin tract infection rates.CONCLUSION Currently,no clinical evidence supports the advantage of EF pins manufactured with materials other than stainless steel or coated over uncoated pins in reducing the rates of pin tract infections.A standardized definition of pin tract infection in external fixation is still lacking.

Constructing a 30m African Cropland Layer for 2016 by Integrating Multiple remote sensing,crowdsourced,and Auxiliary Datasets

Despite its essential importance to various spatial agriculture and environmental applications,the information on actual cropland area and its geographical distribution remain highly uncertain over Africa among remote-sensing products.Each of the African regions has its unique physical and environmental limiting factors to accurate cropland mapping,which leads to high spatial discre-pancies among remote sensing cropland products.Since no dataset could cope with all limitations,multiple datasets initially derived from various remote sensing sensors and classification techniques must be integrated into a more accurate cropland product than individual layers.Here,in the current study,four cropland products,produced initially from multiple sensors(e.g.Landsat-8 OLI,Sentinel-2 MSI,and PrOBA-V)to cover the period(2015-2017),were integrated based on their cropland mapping accuracy to build a more accurate cropland layer.The four cropland layers’accuracy was assessed at Agro-ecological zones units via an inten-sive reference dataset(17,592 samples).The most accurate crop-land layer was then identified for each zone to construct the final cropland mask at 30 m resolution for the nominal year of 2016 over Africa.As a result,the new layer was produced in higher cropland mapping accuracy(overall accuracy=91.64%and cropland’s F-score=0.75).The layer mapped the African cropland area as 282 Mha(9.38%of the Continent area).Compared to earlier crop-land synergy layers,the constructed cropland mask showed a considerable improvement in its spatial resolution(30 m instead of 250 m),mapping quality,and closeness to official statistics(r^(2)=0.853 and rMSE=2.85 Mha).The final layer can be down-loaded as described under the“Data Availability Statement”section.

Tuna classification using super learner ensemble of region-based CNN-grouped 2D-LBP models

Tuna is superior among the marine fishes that are exported in the forms of raw fish and processed food.Separation of Tuna into their species is done in industries manually,and the process is tiresome.This work proposes an automated system for classifying Tuna spe-cies based on their images.An ensemble of region-based deep neural networks is used.A sub region contrast stretching operation is applied to enhance the images.Each fish image is then divided into three regions and is augmented before giving as input to pre-trained convolutional neural networks(CNN).After fine-tuning the models,the output from the last convolutional layer is given to a grouped 2D-local binary pattern descriptor(G2DLBP).Statistical features from the descriptor are applied to different classifiers,and the best clas-sifier for each image region model is identified.Different ensemble methods are subse-quently used to combine the three CNN-G2DLBP models.Among the ensemble techniques,super learner ensemble method with random forest(rF)classifier using 5-fold cross-validation shows the highest classification accuracy of 97.32%.The perfor-mance of different ensemble methods is analyzed in terms of accuracy,precision,recall,and f-score.The proposed system shows an accuracy of 93.91% when evaluated with an independent test dataset.An ensemble of region-based CNN with textural features from G2DLBP is applied for the first time for fish classification.

TinyML-Based Fall Detection for Connected Personal Mobility Vehicles

A new wave of electric vehicles for personal mobility is currently crowding public spaces.They offer a sustainable and efficient way of getting around in urban environments,however,these devices bring additional safety issues,including serious accidents for riders.Thereby,taking advantage of a connected personal mobility vehicle,we present a novel on-device Machine Learning(ML)-based fall detection system that analyzes data captured from a range of sensors integrated on an on-board unit(OBU)prototype.Given the typical processing limitations of these elements,we exploit the potential of the TinyML paradigm,which enables embedding powerful ML algorithms in constrained units.We have generated and publicly released a large dataset,including real riding measurements and realistically simulated falling events,which has been employed to produce different TinyML models.The attained results show the good operation of the system to detect falls efficiently using embedded OBUs.The considered algorithms have been successfully tested on mass-market low-power units,implying reduced energy consumption,flash footprints and running times,enabling new possibilities for this kind of vehicles.

Machine Learning-Based radio Access Technology Selection in the Internet of Moving Things

The Internet of Moving Things(IoMT)takes a step further with respect to traditional static IoT deployments.In this line,the integration of new eco-friendly mobility devices such as scooters or bicycles within the Cooperative-Intelligent Transportation Systems(C-ITS)and smart city ecosystems is crucial to provide novel services.To this end,a range of communication technologies is available,such as cellular,vehicular WiFi or Low-Power Wide-Area Network(LPWAN);however,none of them can fully cover energy consumption and Quality of Service(QoS)requirements.Thus,we propose a Decision Support System(DSS),based on supervised Machine Learning(ML)classification,for selecting the most adequate transmission interface to send a certain message in a multi-radio Access Technology(rAT)set up.Different ML algorithms have been explored taking into account computing and energy constraints of IoMT enddevices and traffic type.Besides,a real implementation of a decision tree-based DSS for micro-controller units is presented and evaluated.The attained results demonstrate the validity of the proposal,saving energy in communication tasks as well as satisfying QoS requirements of certain urgent messages.The footprint of the real implementation on an Arduino Uno is 444 bytes and it can be executed in around 50µs.

Analyzing the multilevel structure of the European airport network

The multilayered structure of the European airport network（EAN）,composed of connections and flights between European cities,is analyzed through the k-core decomposition of the connections network.This decomposition allows to identify the core,bridge and periphery layers of the EAN.The core layer includes the best-connected cities,which include important business air traffic destinations.The periphery layer includes cities with lesser connections,which serve low populated areas where air travel is an economic alternative.The remaining cities form the bridge of the EAN,including important leisure travel origins and destinations.The multilayered structure of the EAN affects network robustness,as the EAN is more robust to isolation of nodes of the core,than to the isolation of a combination of core and bridge nodes.

A neural network to predict reactor core behaviors

The global fuel management problem in BWrs(Boiling Water reactors) can be understood as a very complex optimization problem,where the variables represent design decisions and the quality assessment of each solution is done through a complex and computational expensive simulation.This last aspect is the major impediment to perform an extensive exploration of the design space,mainly due to the time lost evaluating non promising solutions.In this work,we show how we can train a Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP) to predict the reactor behavior for a given configuration.The trained MLP is able to evaluate the configurations immediately,thus allowing performing an exhaustive evaluation of the possible configurations derived from a stock of fuel lattices,fuel reload patterns and control rods patterns.For our particular problem,the number of configurations is approximately 7.7×10^(10);the evaluation with the core simulator would need above 200 years,while only 100hours were required with our approach to discern between bad and good configurations.The later were then evaluated by the simulator and we confirm the MLP usefulness.The good core configurations reached the energy requirements,satisfied the safety parameter constrains and they could reduce uranium enrichment costs.
